  1. MIght be of interest: http://en.vedur.is/earthquakes-and-volcanism/articles/nr/1884 'Eruption in Iceland - frequently asked questions Update on activity Eruption in Eyjafjallajökull, Iceland Current events Magma intrusion - 05 May 2010 13:40' Discusses the recent seismic activity. 2. New post on the Eruptions blog: 'The latest news from the Eyjafjallajökull eruption has the volcano erupting more explosively again (see above), possibly due to an increased influx of water into the vent area - in any case, the ash has become denser (by volume in the air) and the plume is higher (see below) than in the last couple of weeks. '
  3. From post 295 here: http://scienceblogs.com/eruptions/2010/05/eyjafjallajokull_update_for_53.php#comments Iceland Met office update: Assessment 04 May 2010 19:00 Plume was observed at 5.8-6 km height (19-20,000 ft) estimated from the Icelandic Coast Guard (ICG) flight at 10:40 and 15:30 GMT. It is heading east-south-east to south-east from the eruption site. Plume track clearly visible up to 300-400 km distance from the eruption site on a NOAA satellite image at 13:13 GMT. Water levels have been rather constant. Water temperature at Markarfljot bridge was low this morning (below 2°C) but seems to be rising (about 5°C at noon). Water level seems to be slightly decreasing. Lava is still flowing northwards, forming a lava fall down the steep hill under Gígjökull, about 4 km north of the crater. Blue gas is seen rising from the lava and white steam plumes are seen somewhat lower and mark the front of the lava stream. The size of the eruptive crater is 280 x 190 m. Lava splashes are thrown at least a few hundred meters into the air. Overall assessment is that it is more explosive activity and ash production than was observed yesterday. Progression of the lava seems to be slower than yesterday. Presently there are no indications that the eruption is about to end. No measurable geophysical changes within the Katla volcano.
  4. I would have/should have added a winky smilie after my last post, but I hate the way the usual wink smilie ; ) turns into a mad gimpy fool on this site - and I can never remember what the winky smilie actually is here. I think you stand a better chance than if GB gets back in - fewer people wanting to escape then.
  5. It miraculously avoids France & Spain (& the London airports) by curving round - amazing!
  6. 3 more earthquakes: http://en.vedur.is/earthquakes-and-volcanism/earthquakes/myrdalsjokull/#view=map
  7. Yup - this old girl manages to surprise me every day... Nope - geologist! Although I have been known to paint & I take photos for fun. Your guess is as good as mine, even the experts are saying nowt. Earthquake in the caldera now - I suspect things might get interesting (well, even more interesting!). No idea on timescale tho'. Just need to watch for shallowing of the eqs - they all seem to be bobbing about a median line depth at the moment. http://en.vedur.is/earthquakes-and-volcanism/earthquakes/myrdalsjokull/#view=map
  8. I like the pretty whispy clouds that have appeared - like draped veils.
  9. Tourists back again - one has rather interesting shorts on and a couple of white sticks coming out the bottom of them.
  10. It's only when you look at this cam: http://www.simnet.is/jonfr500/earthquake/vefmyndeyjafjalmulaen.html that you see how far the melt/lava has actually travelled. Front on it is all foreshortened. Hvol cam is clearing now: http://eldgos.mila.is/eyjafjallajokull-fra-thorolfsfelli/
  11. Going by all that steam, up top. I wasn't being literal! If it stays clear tonight tho' it should be interesting. Something to watch - above the split rock is an arch of ice (I think). Wonder how long that will last...
  12. Looks pretty busted up. The top of that split boulder has gone & a large amount of glacier up top. Good view here now: http://www.simnet.is/jonfr500/earthquake/vefmyndeyjafjalmulaen.html Is that people down there (voda cam, bottom pic, top side of the 'narrow' bit of river channel - on the river bank?
  13. Suddenly the voda cam is completely clear of mist. Quick, before it comes back!
  14. Very sharp drop in seismic activity (for now): http://hraun.vedur.is/ja/Katla2009/stodvaplott.html News report - I wonder if some of the footage was taken by people in those vehicles we saw the other day. http://dagskra.ruv.is/sjonvarpid/4497981/2010/05/03/1/
  15. The glacier seems to be gone from that hanging valley. Just a bit of it left now in front of the big steam plume.
  16. Looks like a big hole in the glacier now with steam coming out of it. Just how black is that ash cloud today...!

  18. I'm wondering how much of that valley full of fog is due to the volcano.
  19. Voda cam allowing a few peaks at the various plumes, at the moment. Still foggy in the valley tho' so we can't see the outflow area. http://www.vodafone.is/eldgos/en Everything is covered in ash, no white to be seen anywhere. Looks like a different place completely. Burnt & smoking...
