Usual rant from me, these "snow depth charts" are in no way indicative of what the EC is actually showing. The algorithms in them are hyped up purely for clickbait, that's the only explanation I can think of.

Edit: Just noticed that foot and a half of snow near Dublin, yeah alright

Erm, that foot and a half of snow "near Dublin" is actually for the Wicklow Mountains which are only 20 miles from Dublin. The highest peak being over 900 metres so perfectly plausible.

Gfs seems to model NE USA and Greenland much better than the Euros, due to locale...12z concerning if it's spotted the flatter pattern due to the Canadian lobe an stronger jet...it's flat.

Very misleading and completely wrong. The ECM consistently outperforms GFS when it comes to snowstorms and hurricanes around the east coast of the USA - the pros over there always slate the GFS! ECM is their go to model when big weather events are incoming.

    @Sawel what’s your elevation asl?

Met Office going with snow above around 200m so if you’re thereabouts that’s a good call.

@Norrance yeah wet bulb freezing level is around 400m over Dundee right now, according to GFS. Generally you want it to be less than 200m from your elevation for snow so it ties in with the above. Other factors in play of course, it’s only a rough guide.

I'm just over 140 metres ASL. The fact that I'm further inland has a bearing too compared to the rest of the town.

In the absence of interesting weather  I went for a sneaky pint after work. Group of guys at one table were talking about the foot of snow due to fall tonight (I didn’t have the heart to say that was somewhat unlikely in Broughty Ferry

:D) while another group were mocking the red warning from the Met Office because there was virtually no snow outside (let’s leave aside the fact that Dundee isn’t in the red warning area). Two conclusions to draw:

    1) unless it happens in your backyard very few folk are interested or have any sense of the ‘bigger perspective’

    2) what kind of idiot would get involved in the snow prediction game....:D

@Norrance @Sawel can we go back to a yellow warning, please? Delivered much more than the amber....

Been a disappointing day in general - had about 9cms fall yesterday evening up until 4am this morning and only a cm or so since. So you're right - the yellow warning overdelivered and the amber warning has been a big let down so far!

I'll never forget the whiteout and extreme windchill last night. Will look back on these videos and pics I have for years to come. The most severe and extreme snow and windchill I've experienced!

Nah, we're hardier than those soft central belters.

Seriously, probably more to do with population density causing it to be raised rather than severity. If the M8 is closed with snow and people stranded everyone takes notice, if the B979 is the same.....

Yep, it seems to be reserved for the most populous areas of the UK with busy motorways, airports etc. Put it this way, how many times have you seen the highlands under a red warning? Zilch.

    And the next shower begins.

Feels weird as all the house lights in my street are off which is very unusual so everyone appears to have gone to bed to keep cosy. That is apart from me who is staring out the window lampost watching

I went out to take a few measurements and have 8cms measured on flat ground (no grass) in my front garden.
