  1. Light snow here this morning. very light dusting so far.
  2. 5.2C Cold start first week(well below average)-> then mostly above average, until the 29th when cold returns bringing CET back to near average.
  3. Heavy sleet and rain mix on and off for the last few hours.
  4. The sea was looking quite rough then as well I see. The east coast of north Yorkshire is well worth a visit anytime.
  5. SCARBOROUGH has been hit by a series of snow storms leading to chaos on the roads. A total of six car accidents took place on Saturday morning which led to parts of the A171 Scarborough to Whitby road being closed. Temperatures plunged to below freezing on Sunday and weather experts warned drivers to stay off the roads. Scarborough Police closed the road between Boggle Hole and Pond Hill. The road was closed for two hours while the vehicles were recovered. The first accident happened at 1.36am at Fylingdales when a Ford KA skidded off the road. At 3.50am and van went off the road at High Hawsker and at 6.51am a Ford Transit van skidded off the road at Cloughton. Three vehicles were involved in a collision at 4.52am at Fylingdales. A van was hit by a Vauxhall Vectra which was then hit by a BMW. The next accident happened at 7.26am at Cloughton Bank when a van went off the road and later in the morning there was another accident at Fylingdales between a Vauxhall Vectra, Renault Clio and Vauxhall Astra. Nobody was injured in any of the accidents.
  6. The deepest snow was about 1/2 way between Picking and Scarborough on the A170. The gritters made very little impact!
  7. Fantastic. Wish I got the train form pickering now. Although had my share of snow where I was.
  8. I was heading that way at first but the A171 was closed for a while, so decides to stay around Scarborough. I will look forward to seeing the pictures.
  9. Staxton was a little tricky at 9am just north of you. The A64 was completely covered that that point.
  10. A trip on the A170 & A171 to the North Yorkshire Coast. Had to contend with difficult driving conditions from 9am -> 4pm when I headed back home. Snow was settling all day expect right on the coast. A171 was closed for a time so I had to turn back. Best of the snow was between Pickering and Scarborough on the A170 which was just about passable. Several Inches in favored spots. Many minor accidents on the roads.
  11. Blizzard conditions in Wykeham, north Yorkshire on the A170. Road becoming impassable. Been heavy snow on and off all day. 2-3 Inches I would guess. Heavy snow from Thornton-le-Dale to Scarborough for most of the day. Police advising people not to use the road. Heavy snow also on the A64 near Scarborough. A171 very bad between Scarborough and Whitby. The road was closed for a while this morning. I turned back after hearing the reports on the radio. Saw many accidents on the roads. Not sure why no snowploughs where deployed! The snow was so heavy it was settling on gritted roads quite easily.
  12. Just looked up what a sun pillar is and I am sure that it was one. Some more of the sun pillars Higher exposure:
  13. Not snow, but of interest: We had freezing rain here this morning (Vale of York, North of York). 0.7C and raining. froze on colder services. Took a while to get into the car this morning! luckily roads did not seem to be effected.
  14. Nice snow fall in Northern Sweden this morning: http://www.pajala.co.uk/ first decent fall this autumn for the area.
  15. Very user friendly. I love the detail you get with you set your local area and all on one page. Nice use of JavaScript collapse & expand to get further information. Defiantly a step forward.
  16. If those anomalies where neutral it would represent a drastic cooling trend. There was significant global warming in the 90s and it would take an equally significant cooling to return neutral. It will be quite a few years before we see blue across that map (maybe!). How do the anomalies look compared to 1998 -> 2008?. I would guess a few more blues in there or at least some smaller red dots. At the moment you can create maps like that to support a cooling or warming trend it just depends on the sample (dates) used. The fact is the earth has warmed (peaked??) and is now cooling. No one can say for sure that this short term trend will continue or that its just a blip and warming will continue soon. People should look for cleaner alternatives for energy regardless of global warming or the lack of it!. Using global warming to encourage people to go green is great while the warming trend lasts, but what happens when that trend is reversed? Do people stop trying to go green? Seems rather dangerous to try and change the world based on an unproven link.
  17. Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal, near Ripon, North Yorkshire. Yorkshire’s first World Heritage Site is a huge estate of beauty, contrasts and surprises including the largest abbey ruins in the country and one of England’s most spectacular Georgian water gardens.
  18. People phoning for help in Galveston, beach houses flooded people trapped waist deep on the 2nd floor... other calls for help home collapsing round them. No help is coming until the storm passes.
  19. Computer models shown on local news have Galveston completely underwater.
