  1. A good example of todays convection showers over the North York Moors from the Howardian Hills: The view between Rievaulx and Hawnby: Sutton Bank:
  2. If you would like to see as much snow as you could ever wish for and have a car try driving through the North York Moors !. Although for safety reasons I would not recommend it. Looks like Lapland out there. Up to my knees in a places. Many roads only passable with 4x4 and some routes closed.
  3. Yes not too far. I was in flaxton. Abandoning the car: Nice covering ! Minor Road covered: Long exposure shot:
  4. Got a good dumping of snow today while visiting family between York and Malton. At one stage the A64 was completely covered and closed in both directions. Ended up abandoning the car a short distance from my destinations, but later returned after the road was snowploughed. There was about 4 inches on the road. Some of the heaviest snow I have seen. I would guess 4 to 5 inches fell in 1 hour.
  5. Flash warnings have now been issues by the met office for North Yorkshire.
  6. Yes slight movement south and a few flurries south of the main band of showers, but for significant snow today and tonight away from the North York moors we need that moving allot further south. Or developing widely along the coast.
  7. The warnings are for an area of risk, they don't say everyone will be hit in that region and they can't predict exactly where the showers will be in those situations. Its all about levels of risk for an area. If you just miss out it does not mean the warning was wrong ! as the risk was still there. Thats way they say "moderate risk". I am hoping the showers do develop further south and further inland tonight but so far today the warning areas are correct. if they start developing south of North Yorkshire I am sure they will update the warnings.
  8. Based on the latest charts the shot term chance of snow has reduced away from the north and east facing hills of the North York Moors. If the models change or the showers start developing further south, so will the warnings. Long term the chance of snow is still good, but not as good as it was showing yesterday. Met office warnings seem fair to me.
  9. They have been downgraded because it looks likely that significant showers will be for the far north east of our region for today and tomorrow. Radar currently showing the showers to the north of out region so its correct so far. I hope the showers shift further south, but I think away from the North York Moors the chances of seeing significant snow have reduced for tonight and tomorrow.
  10. Frequent snow showers from new year onwards looks quite likely now with a high risk of significant snow in the east, but also pushing far inland for a time. Repeat of two weeks ago I think ! some areas will do allot better then others depending on the streamers, but looking good for most of us in the east.
  11. Convection showers now edging into our region. North York Moors receiving snow showers at the moment and they are starting to move slightly south.
  12. It looks increasingly likely that the low pressure system will be too far south for this region to receive a large dumping of snow from it, but there will be a significant threat from convection off the north sea from a brisk easterly. Snow showers across the region for at least 5 days with the east getting the most.
  13. Large contrast in temperatures then in a short distance Beverley is only about 40miles away . -1.6 °C here currently and its not been above freezing all day.
  14. All this talk of an upcoming freeze... The last one never really ended here in North Yorkshire ?? 10 days of snow cover here @ 14m asl. -2.1 °C last time I checked @ 11am. View out my window:
  15. We have about 5 inchs remaining in our back garden. About an extra inch over the last 12 hours. Very slight thaw at 0.5C and foggy. 7 days now with deep lying snow... Not bad for December @ 14m ASL.
  16. In Lapland last year it was -6 and it started raining very dangerous conditions, luckily it was not that heavy. Clearing the windscreen took quite a while !
  17. I have seen rain at -6 in Lapland! so it can happen. -3 here and -6 in Topcliff ! .
  18. Midday and the temperature here is -5C ! extremely impressive day time temp .... should rise for a few hours but will be another ice day, with plenty of laying snow. I would expect the snow to last up until Christmas now at least, with snow or freezing rain early Christmas eve. Freezing fog could be a big problem after that.
  19. Extremely cold night once again -7.3 @ 10pm freezing fog forming. 5 days now with deep snow on the ground, this is really turning into a significant cold spell. Lowest temperature in the vale of York so far this cold spell is -14 ! quite impressive.
  20. Pickering on the 20th: York: Brandsby: Further Pictures here: http://www.gojicafe.co.uk/dec20th-2009/
  21. Been another fantastic day here, Started in the morning with a low of -11 with 3-4 inches on the ground. Snow, nice crisp winter sun, then a two hour spell of wet snow adding a 1/2 an inch or so. Really should of dug up our Christmas tree sooner! And from the 18th:
