  1. Weather on main roads (in co-operation with the Finnish Road Administration) Bad road conditions are expected in Lapland and also in the municipalities of Pudasjärvi, Taivalkoski and Kuusamo because of snow or sleet and ice-covered roads.
  2. Lapland's winter is starting... Finland Snow: 28 Sept
  3. Also even if its below freezing you can still get rain and drizzle. I have experienced light rain at -6 while cross country skiing in North Sweden (within the arctic circle).
  4. Spotless Days vs Cycle 23 minimum graph http://www.solarcycle24.com/graphs/sunspotgraph.gif It show just how inactive this minimum has been compared to the last one 12 years ago.
  5. My current main job in the garden at the moment is burning all traces of my potato plants after a server attack from blight. Although its not all bad, I do still have parsnips, mixed salad leafs, rocket, tomatoes, courgette, pumpkins, runner beans, corn in the ground ready for harvesting over autumn. My Tips: Only take out organic matter thats for consumption, compost everything else. Don't leave bare earth over winter as some nutrients will be washed away (use a green Manure Crop for large bare areas or mulch). Mulch every year around plants. Leave grass cuttings on the lawn (short regular cuttings) so it breaks down and allows the nutrients back into the soil. Grow confrey to be used as a liquid feed, compost activator or as a mulch. Try and create balanced eco systems (mimic nature). Go organic wherever possible.
  6. Yes Finningley and Spurn Head stand out for the amount of snow at low altitude. Particularly Spurn Head right on the coast! Finningley 9m(asl) 51 days of snow max 30cm avg. 18.8cm Spurn Head 9m(asl) 43 days of snow max 36cm avg. 14.3cm Its a shame there are no records from the North York Moors, it would be very interesting.
  7. The Winter of 47; In North Yorkshire Audio & Pictures link http://www.myyorkshire.org/video-fullscreen.asp?journeyid=25&resourceid=40 Other links: Snow in Ryedale, North Yorkshire The Winter of 1947 wiki for that winter
  8. Lots of butterflies and Moths here also over the last week or so. Here is a shot of a Magpie Moth taken last week:
  9. 10 flood warnings in the north east. 13 areas in flood watch, but I would expect allot more soon as the water makes it way off the hills.
  10. A few weather related problems around here due to the weather. Difficult driving conductions and more traffic than normal. Rain is clearing from the south but more on its way. 97.0 % humidity and about 25mm of rain so far. A63 North Yorkshire - Hull Road closed both ways due to fallen power cables A1 North Yorkshire - Partially blocked northbound due to accident and flooding at B6285 Burneston Hargill, in Leeming North Yorkshire - Very slow traffic on Westwood Road northbound due to flooding between Valley Road and Westwood, in Scarborough Overall not too many issues considering how heavy the rain was throughout the morning. I would of thought more flooding to come in the North East.
  11. Persistent heavy rain across most of North Yorkshire at the moment. Warnings justified here, I think. Lots of standing water, if this carries on there could be flooding problems. It really depends if the low stalls for a while or not.
  12. The low track 6pm Thursday to 6pm Friday, based on 06z gfs run.
  13. Met office saying 30% risk of 100mm or more locally over higher ground for E Riding of Yorkshire, Kingston upon Hull, N Yorkshire and York. There is a high risk of severe weather affecting northeast England and parts of southeast Scotland during Friday, Friday night and early Saturday. Persistent and sometimes heavy rain is expected, giving totals of between 50 and 70mm in many areas with a 30% risk of 100mm or more locally over higher ground. The heavy rain could lead to flooding in some areas and cause disruption to outdoor events and transport networks.
  14. Quite an intense little storm in the Vale of York. Plenty of cloud-to-ground lightning, been going for 15min now. Was not expected. 14 strikes picked up by Strikestar detection system.
  15. Distant lighting and thunder here at the moment. Make that directly over head! lots of lighting. Downpour, loud rumbles of thunder and many flashes.
  16. Nice but small storm moving in here: see pic Some thunder.
  17. very intense storm passing over here... must be some flooding about, lots of standing water on the roads. Water starting to get under the front door! Plenty of thunder although none for a few minutes.
  18. Thunder and very heavy rain here. Not that impressive strike rate but still some nice rumbles.
  19. I can hear thunder here... storm heading this way from the south. looks intense on the radar.
  20. Strikes in far north of England already. http://www.netweather.tv/index.cgi?action=lightning;sess=
  21. Between York and Easingwold. The storms between Easingwold and Thirsk.
  22. Repeated lighting strikes visitable and allot rumbling through the Vale of York. Lightning looks like its sticking the ground, rather then cloud to cloud. Netweathers lightning map shows it nicely. http://www.netweather.tv/index.cgi?action=lightning;sess=
