  1. Is it not true that Polar ice extent is about average (long term average) with the north loosing about the same as the south gains?? Which surely indications a shift in sea and land temps / weather patterns and not the run away global melt we are lead to believe by many. Is it not plausible that the pattern will change and we will have ice growth in the north and melting in the south at some point in the near future??.
  2. Geoengineering is a big mistake in my opinion, when will be learn not to try and control nature and work with it. CO2 is vital for life on earth, it naturally increases when temperatures increase and decreases when temperatures drop, its part of the worlds natural cycle. All we need to do is restore natural habitats and live in harmony with nature and then the earth will look after its self.
  3. All the answers can be found in Permaculture; following natures example and working with it not against it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PermacultureMartin Crawford´s FOREST GARDEN Stockfree farming: Organically, Ethically and Sustainably. http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=7455120&server=vimeo.com&show_title=1&show_byline=1&show_portrait=1&color=&fullscreen=1&autoplay=0&loop=0 A Food Forest Garden: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vBShBeC1f-Q Farming With Nature - Permaculture with Sepp Holzer: Geoff Lawton's Permaculture Food Forest: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWayqR9RRys
  4. I went to a location between York and the North York Moors which has little light pollution. Excellent view at around 11.45pm, saw 6 in about 10-15mins, but the cloud then moved in. Excellent view of the milky way, so was worth driving a little further away from York for the stars along. Overall worth the effort of driving out to find a good location and clear skies.
  5. Sky is 80% clear now (North of York), so if they arrive at some point in the next few hours maybe there is a chance of seeming them. Cam at the ready pointing out the sky light!
  6. Car swept under bridge in flood A major search is under way after a vehicle is swept under a bridge after heavy rain on the North York Moors. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/north_yorkshire/8539206.stm Flooding in Scarborough.. Villages flooding in parts of the east coast. Been snowing heavy now for a few hours, still very wet slushy covering. Not expected at 14m asl.
  7. Just been out on the roads. Its bad on the A64 from York to the A1 and routes from York to Selby. York Center has a nice thick covering, with less cars about earlier on it was very picturesque. Many roads around York were covered, but starting to clear where the cars are breaking up the salt.
  8. Been driving around howardian hills today and caught some very heavy snow and hail showers, far more frequent then the forecast suggested. Decent covering in some locations, light covering almost everywhere from north York to the North York moors. With temps already below freezing any further showers will settle on all untreated surfaces. Showers forecast to die out, but still many heading in land from the north sea.
  9. Flash warnings for Heavy Snow http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/yh/yh_forecast_warnings.html?day=1
  10. Looks like the easterly flow is starting to push the NE flow showers north and west. I guess it will be out our region by midnight. Then all eyes will be on the easterly flow with shorter sharper showers. They look to already be hitting just south of Grimsby
  11. We are on for another few inchs here I think, already an inch added from tonights snow. The last lot has been moderate for about 45min now.
  12. Moderate snow starting to push in again here. Could last a while this one
  13. Activity in the north sea seems to be building again with showers merging. Still from the north east but increasingly more east, particularly the south of our region.
  14. Looks extremely likely that parts of East Yorkshire and the North York Moores will get another few inches today and maybe a little further inland and south.
  15. They did get inland, just not as far as some wanted. Last night they said as far inland as the A1 on local radio (which P Hudson does) which was about right. Just because some of you missed out does not mean the forecast was wrong, showers in nature hit some areas and miss others. Forecasting is all about chances of something happening not that it will happen! Must be very difficult to predicted exactly where the showers will die away.
  16. We have had two nights at least where it got down to -12. It was -10.2 this morning. Most days for the last week have been ice days. Typically max temp has been -2 over the last several days. We have also had some snow cover since the 17th of Dec. Although at one stage it was only sitting in the shade. Snow has fallen nearly every day this week, with some very impressive sharp showers. Locally this cold spell has been amazing. The biggest problem with this weather may come in the form of flooding. If you get a sudden thaw with rain it could be extreme: See: Sandbags ordered as York braced for flooding when snow melts
  17. In and around York this morning. Just started snowing again. - 10.2 °C @ 9am this morning here now -5 ! this is some cold spell here and up on the moors it must be really bad!
  18. 8 inches here now, not bad for 14m asl, but some places in North Yorkshire (Kirkbymoorside) got a further 8 inchs on top of what they already have). All roads around York seem covered.Must be well over a 1 1/2 foot in places on the moors!.
  19. been a blizzard for about 30min now... a good few inches out of this I think.
  20. Yorks going to get hit bad by the looks of it. Just about to start here. Already got 1cm extra from the last heavy shower.
  21. Showers starting to intensify and merge over the north york moors heading SSE. They should start to get further inland. I would of thought you would be too far west, but I guess theres a chance.
