Afternoon storm fans
It's looks like areas to the east of the IOW are in a favourable position for any possible storms that might develop this evening
Unfortunately, this is not on my home patch and I'm eager to make the most of any opportunities that come our way before this season finally comes to an end..
Can anybody recommend a spot that offers some cover from the elements, with great views? Preferably all around? as I am willing to travel this evening, but I don't have a clue where to place myself. Any ideas would be much appreciated!

I did look like half a chance, but it looks like it has fallen apart.. it's now raining
I would like to get the camera out, but the wind and sea spray have put that idea to bed.. I'll stick around a little longer just in case

I've decided to take a drive to Milford on sea, the cell approaching Christchurch/ Isle of wight area....I can see lightning coming from it. I'm in a good position to intercept if it makes it to where I am!

Biblical raining here in Christchurch, and very sporadic lightning
Great for the grass, expected more lightning if I'm honest. Hopefully this peps up a little

19.43 sunset here tonight - probably a minute or two later for you. While this is depressing on the face of it given we've lost 1 hour 40 mins on the solstice, it has its silver linings in terms of opening up more of the evening for storm photography, yes!
I'm not entirely sure what to expect this evening
Is this the main event that we are seeing out west, or are there other opportunities later on?
This is from the Netweather forecast
Through this evening and overnight, there looks to be a more organise push for clusters of thunderstorms to break out, as upper support increase with a shortwave trough, currently to the NW of Iberia to the west of the Bay of Biscay, ejects NE towards SW Britain this evening
Is this what we are seeing? As UKv doesn't show that much interest for later on... I'm confused

Indeed, great call! I think this is the least MN owes us after such a dry and storm-less summer. It's refreshing to have such an interesting and thundery set-up on our hands, especially one that's lasting more than one day.
And we don't have to wait until 2230 before it's dark enough for photography
I shouldn't get too excited yet..

Congrats on those! I also had my camera pointed at one of our two TV masts (Chillerton) over here but didn't get so lucky! You've done really well there given the lack of CGs. There are more in your photos than I even saw with my eyes! I really messed up in terms of positioning etc which didn't help.
Thanks!
There was some quite prolific lightning over your way, I'm surprised you didn't see more than you did,
but I agree, from what I could see most, of the lightning was in the cloud
Hopefully tonight yields better cloud to ground lightning prospects...
Looks like it could be a late one

Congrats to many on here that are enjoying a decent thunderstorm
This years storm season has been a strange one, started off well in May, not much in the middle.... and here we are in September getting some decent action!
Unfortunately for me, the storms initiated a little bit too far east for me to get in on some decent action.
Plus I made the mistake of going west, when I should have gone east, but there you go that's life!
I did manage to get some pictures with my 135mm and I'm actually quite happy with how they turned out
Hopefully there will be more surprises in the coming days!

Taking the 21.45 radar frame into consideration, it's going further east than that.
Do you expect developments further west?
I can't quite decide where to head for this one
-
Looking at the radar, one thing that sticks out is how fast these cells are moving...
If you do get a storm this evening, enjoy it while it lasts!
Im heading out now, fingers crossed some some something

Just arrived at southbourne clifftop, I've seen two bolts out to sea, nothing showing on lightning maps though
Just heard a rumble!

Looks like we are just starting to see signs of activity sparking off to the west of the Cherbourg peninsula, roughly inline with the latest UKv
I'm just about to head down to the coast just in case
Possibly a touch further west than modeled, which could be a positive for areas towards the southeast

South central current conditions, 23°c and much fresher than even an hour ago
The wind is quite gusty at times, and we have low level cloud streaming in off the sea #NotFeelingVeryStormy....

It looks like there could be some more showers forming behind the main front
A cell has formed out in the channel, and is heading right for my location, it will be interesting to see what comes of it
It's definitely more breezy now, and it has cooled by about 3 degrees Celsius, but still rather muggy

Can't believe I finished work early and came out to take photos of this! What a pathetic end to the heatwave!
I feel your pain
I did exactly the same, and what makes it worse is, i know all my colleagues are going to be taunting me tomorrow after this epic fail

That was looking NE from Cowes so don't know how much you would have seen of it. Certainly didn't see it from where I am although if you've got a better view in that direction than I have you might have done.
Yeah, I was looking at the radar wondering which cell it came from, definitely nothing from this side of the island, nice capture though

Many surprises in-store in the coming days, I definitely didn't expect these cells to appear this evening
Here is a time lapse from this evening

I wouldn't rule anything out judging by the what's happening in the rest of the country.
Some of these storms are quite organised more so than I was expecting, definitely not your typical pulse storms!
