Next 48 hours, looking at the CAPE and the experimental hail on ESTOFEX, Wednesday looks more 'volatile' for Telford, N Midlands, N. Wales and N west England.
Interesting comment on the flying ants Mesoscale. Perhaps it's simply the thundery downpours disturb the nests ?
Nah, taint nowt to do with being frightened of an impending downpour.
Usually see flying ants, once the warmer air is around, generating thermals for them to take to the air and spread over far distances. However, the conditions usually have to be right, typically around 25C, and with not much air movement, purely reliant upon the thermals and not wind to depart, as it's easier to take off in those conditions.
It's interesting as here they have been preparing for the last 3-4 days, but as it was so windy they stayed close to the ant domains. Today the wind fell away, the heat wacked nicely to around 25C and orf they jolly well went.

Mmmm mmm, it sounds really great, unfortunately not in my bank balance for this year or next, as I need to bag more tornadic stuff to satisfy that need first. But then, the Arizona trip hits top of my list, as a would most definitely do.
Nice idea, just cant do two US trips in one year.
Put my name down as a definite for 2012, in fact that would be me and missus.
-
Yeah, It COULD...
~~~~~~
Or maybe not if your on the coast, as in my case it is all coming in from the wrong direction for me
-
I cant stop laughing..(video)
anyway.....whatever hapens its going to be fun tomorrow for some..
showers first thing I reckon in the morning from the word go
Quentin
Im waiting for the Plume mate....then will go South of the country cant miss a supercell...if we are lucky enough
To be honest I think the south coast is not the place be, it'll need some thermals to trigger some activity, the current direction is all wrong for that, more inland you'll do better as the heat rises and triggers something.
Cool sea breezes & wrong direction with lack of heat suggest here is not the place to be.
Harry...I wasnt expecting this in France...so un-prepared..otherwise I would go..
Despite the forecast of rain, there hasn't been much at all, so hopefully some much needed rain tomorrow
Well...... we have the rain and .........there hasn't been much at all
3mm is the total, not enough to get past the top crusty hard baked soil covering on the garden. Now aout 7" short year on year down here.
Latest BBC Update's mentioning the Dreaded T Word for early hours of the morning in the East and South East.
Go onto the BBC Site and click Forecast Video.
We shall see but it would be nice for this hot spell to go out with even a small bang!
Mr S.
Been watching a bank of what looks like sea mist off the dorset coast all morning.
It seems to wallowing around out in the channel and yet clearly visible from Bournemouth beach. Anybody else seen it, would be a good view from the ballon?
Like the idea on regional threads even during the summer, especially when it's a tad more active than present. I do enjoy a good read so the model thread alignment idea I like so I can drop in pick up the gist and then move on.
Keep it up.
This sounds as though it has the makings of a great stormfest, unfortunately having three cocker spaniels I cant make it (well not cheaply kennel fee's...), unless I bring them and they become the original "HOT DOGS"
Can I suggest you tie one end of a long piece of rope to a strong gatepost, and the other end to Pat, that way you may find him in the morning. :unsure:
I'd previously made mention to the job the guys had done during our tour.
Let's not forget it is a business that Paul and the guys are running here, and to that end a more devoted bunch of folks you'd struggle hard to find. Didn't see the other tour companies expounding and socialising quite like our teams.
To those who dedicate their spare time is assisting and supporting the tours, your a credit. :wub:
Never ending with knowledge, assistance and help of most kinds the team really do work at this to make it so worthwhile and totally enjoyable.
Which is proven by how many folks book to go back, to that end time to go find a new piggy bank to save for next time and here's hoping I get to count beyond "1" tornado next year
Now enjoy your break, you worked damn hard for it, all of you.
PS I've even sent Tyson Darling a "THANK YOU" card for being so pleasant
Currently looking like the good stuff is going to go east of Southampton (as is often the case). Hoping to see some activity down here in Poole, but it does look more like a rain maker down here, than a storm generator.
Paul & the Team
You did a great job, certainly on tour 3 finding that gem in Colorado, whilst the other states seemed somewhat devoid of the wee beasties. It certainly was a blast
I sat and thought long and hard after this year, should we do it all again, the answer is yes, with such a great team, it's gonna be better second time around.
Pat by next year any chance you can be the fastest guitar player in Gloucs.
Paul, you'll need a year to recover from this one, in prep for what you've promised me is the big 4, don't disappoint me now.
Well done Paul, a June twister AND in Iowa.
Didn't you do well
Started the day in York (Ne) with one eye on the next days Slight Risk in mind. So with this in mind headed west to SW Nebraska where the Models were showing Storms breaking out. Headed west to North Platte for lunch and jumped on quite a nice High Precip Storm which was heading South East, Intercepted it Due South of North Platte and watched some Cg's and a Big Green Hail Core, this chased us for a few hours before everything crapped out, there was a brief moment when the Storm wrapped up and had a nice Wall Cloud before it went HP, Other than that not much to report, but it was nice to take some pictures finally in Nebraska.
Found this whilst cruising through the threads on stormtrack.org
"A chasing tour got a direct hit today. Apparently this is because of a crazy chaser convergence with some chasers blocking the road. People got injured because of this"
Has to a major concern with what is now becoming extremely popular weather watching event...
For a rough idea, convective precip and cape/lifted index are a good guide!
As Craig said - a pretty quick start to the tour shown tonight, it's gonna keep changing run to run for a few days yet though:
Any updates??
Assuming British Airways doesn't screw with my flight too badly I hope to be in town on the 19th.
-
cheers Stu..
looking at the charts at the temps it looks like some cold weather spreading down from the North
to nice air masses meeting with a nice strong jet moving in
Come on now don't use it all up before tour three begins, save some for us.
-
the only thing I can hope for now is to be stranded after Tour 3 finishes..
lol.. ..I dont mind staying and watching Supercells
I'll have some of that too, please....
One more satisfied customer here, with a Sigma 10-20 with the 77mm (Hoya I think) Polarising filter. Only left the camera for wildlife shots really. 99% of shots of storm photos were taken with those combos on. Problem is, combined, they'll set you back more than a 450d probably :ph34r: Definately err towards the wide angle though... can't stress that enough. The only time I'd contemplate a zoom lens or something less wide would be for zooming in on a debris cloud at the base a tornado or something... The 50ml F1.8 lens is what I used for that sort of scenario. Having such a large aperture, it is pretty nice in low light or hand held.
Yep, it's a good lens I've got one also.
Dave, of course, there is another option, given the wide angle cost, but it's usefulness for storm chasing, you can hire one, and that is a lot lot cheaper. Type in Camera lens hire in Google and check the options, it's quick, & less expensive than buying and you'll be so amazed with the lens you'll buy one for next time. :unsure:
Right, that's nailed it then, from Hants through to Oxfords. Yah could have included Dorset, but then again I think we both know it ain't gonna happen down here. Again one of those times you wished you lived somewhere else. No snow in the winter of '09, now no storms in the summer of '10.
What the heck did I do to upset the weather gods?
