  1. Snow has turned heavy here in the last 15 minutes. Temperature had dropped quickly down to 0.5C now settling on grass and cars quite readily, and slushy deposits on concrete Edit: now 0.4C.....could see a nice dusting by the time this has cleared!
  2. Saying that, it's now getting pretty heavy and the tempurature is still dropping, now 1.0C....may get a little dusting before it's gone!
  3. Snow still going, now 1.2C. Nothing going to come of it unfortunately, the intensity ins't all that heavy and it won't last any longer than an hour. Very nice to see though!
  4. Wet snow here now. Very big flakes, ie. very wet snow....1.6C
  5. Just heard the easterly talked about for the first time on a BBC forecast. Showed cold air spilling into the UK from Europe and then said about snow flurries in the East by the middle of the week.
  6. 1.6C here still....the band is about 10 miles from me now.....what is it going to fall as!?
  7. Looks as though its snowing in Norwich/just east of Norwich, according to the 'weather type' feature on the NW radar (found the new version to be very accurate!) Temperature is falling here still, now 1.5C
  8. I'm starting the experience the same as everyone else now. Temperature was just below freezing at 3pm, saw a steady rise to a max of 2.9C at 9pm. Now the heavy rain has started and the temperature has dropped to 2.7C. Plenty of heavy rain to come, and looks to be some heavy more showery areas of precipitation behind the main rain band. No sleetyness here to speak off, the dew point is just a fraction high at the moment.
  9. I think there are two reasons why everyone is so excited tonight..... Firstly, ECM showed near enough the 'perfect' easterly, something never really seen forecast, let alone actually materialising, only then to be fairly well supported by the GFS... Secondly the fact that GFS and ECM are both very similar considering the timescale is promising. Add this in with what Steve and GP have been forecasting, plus the warming of the strat, plus many other encouraging signals all point in the same direction...an easterly looks MUCH more likely that any mild/zonal weather in the mid/long term. Ofcourse it's unlikely that everything will run as smoothly as that, but the output is very very promising. I know what you mean though.....we have all been hurt before and it's sometimes a case of once bitten twice shy.
  10. I know it's not really the place.....but I think it's time to drag this old favourite out again.....could we see it again?
  11. Sky channel 966 it seems to watch Points West.....presume I have the right region? BBC 1 west?
  12. Welcome to the forum! I know many people read but don't post...so well done on coming out of the shadows and joining in the fun! The first scenario shown on that video is what many are getting excited about on there, a large high pressure system over Scandanvia bringing an easterly (or generally from that direction, NE, SE maybe). The second where he talks about it maybe being milder is if the cold air doesn't reach as far west as the UK. We would be mild whereas much of Europe would be in the freezer. Looking odds on that Europe will see some significantly cold weather, but for the UK as ever, if could mean we are right on the edge of the cold. Sometimes we can sit in the cold for a day or two, only for a low pressure system to "bump" into the cold pool over the UK, warming us temporarily. It's then a battle between mild and cold. These sorts of set-ups can bring large dumpings of snow as 1947 showed. But you need a good bit of luck to see that!
  13. Just having a quick flick through the last few pages, I see a few people are already worried about this possibly being a "dry easterly". I really wouldn't get too hung up on this, I would be more worried about getting the cold here first. I know many get carried away with all the hysteria, thinking the model output is "nailed", but we can see some large changes right down to +72. Also, I wouldn't get too hung up on what is shown in FI (probably around 4-5 days at the moment).....it's simply weather porn.....it looks very nice and gets us all hot under the collar, but usually you can look....but not touch.....unless we get lucky ofcourse. Keep a level head, try not to compare output on a run by run basis (as John and others have said, comparing 12z to 12z, 0z to 0z etc. will prove more accurate and have less wild swings in output) Also, think it may be worth keeping an eye on developments in the closer timeframe. Could quite easily see some more surprise snowfalls before the week is out. Enjoy the ride all! A great start to winter!
  14. The one that ticks most of those boxes is the Kestral 4000. I've had mine for 4 years, it's brilliant, and very accurate! It does cost mind you, mine cost £320.....I am thinking of selling it though if you wanted a second hand one.
  15. Silly me....I have selected the current high gusts...go here: http://www.netweather.tv/index.cgi?action=daily;type=maxg Only one report of 70mph - Isle of Portland....no surprise there....everywhere else, nothing out of the ordinary.
  16. Top gusts shown below courtesy of NetWeather's Top 20 feature. Nothing out of the ordinary for an Autumn storm. Ho hum....was hoping for a 70mph gust here....been a while since I recorded one of them 62mph - Weybourne 56mph - Manston 54mph - Andrewsfield 51mph - Shoeburyness 51mph - Marham 50mph - Wattisham 50mph - Wainfleet 49mph - Cambridge 47mph - Holbeach 47mph - Thorney Island 47mph - Northolt 47mph - Isle Of Portland 46mph - Kenley 46mph - South Farnborough 46mph - Scampton 46mph - Wittering 46mph - Heathrow 45mph - Odiham 45mph - Cranwell 45mph - Herstmonceux
  17. Not as windy here as forecast. Maximum gust recorded is 44mph. It was windy but certainly not damaging. Infact driving this morning to the next village, the most I saw was two very small branches down. We've had worse earlier this year.
  18. The Metoffice warning for wind has just been revised at 20:39......now covers a larger area (more inland) and talks of 70mph gusts maybe inland for East Anglia.....interesting night ahead. This may have been under emphasised a little because of the focus on the flooding int he South West!
  19. I wouldn't really class either Weybourne or Great Yarmouth as inland....they both are on the sea! U mention rush hour; being a Sunday ofcourse it shouldn't have too much inpact....well, not as much as a Monday morning!
  20. That surprises me! Can hear the wind from inside the house hear. Only gusting 22mph at the mo.
  21. Winds look stronger off the East Anglian coast than the channel....a MEAN speed of 58mph for Buoy 62142 is being forecast. These sorts of winds are quite rare for East Anglia. If we do see anything like the gust being forecast, then there could be quite a few trees down in the morning around these parts. The last time we had gusts approaching 70mph was over 10 years ago.
  22. Wind won't be a factor until the center of the low begins to pass.....expect the winds to really wind up around 3am onwards.
  23. Capel Curig recorded the 86mph gust, which is at high elevation (the weather station is actually about 2 miles from Capel Curig itself towards Snowden). As far as populated areas go 70 mph wasn't far off the mark. It seems a long time since we last had a proper storm in the South East/East Anglia. Mosts storms have lost their puff by the time they have crossed the west of England. A storm tracking from the Bay of Biscay usually provides our best hope of strong winds. I feel an all nighter coming on! Otherwise I WILL sleep though it......I could sleep through a nuclear war.
  24. I've just posted up int he storm reports thread about a possible ball lightning incident last night around Grizedale forest. My dad witnessed the very bright flash and tremendous boom, and a number of the locals witnessed it, and some reported seeing it like a ball shoot across the sky. Anyone else see/hear of this?
