  1. A bitterly cold day today, and some of the best rime i've ever seen!

    A MAXIMUM of -2.3C, now -3.5 again.

The wind got up around 1pm, causing the rime to blow off the trees, leaving what looked like a centimetre of snow cover under some trees.

We still have some snow cover here from earlier on in the week, quite incredible really for the "even larger teapot" considering there was less than half an inch to begin with.

  2. Ok, this is my punt.

January starting on a cold note, maximums of 3C in the East, 5C over Wales, however from around the 4th/5th much colder air will flood in keeping temperatures well surpressed. -1C over much of the East, -3C over the North of England, maybe a 1C towards Cornwall. Nightime minima very cold inland (in the CET zone), possibly -6C or a tad lower, minima not quite so low on the east coast.

Laying snow from the 5th/6th January (albeit not of any great depths and not for everyone) perhaps giving us some severe frost inland -10C possible, maximums in the region of 0C, this continuing until the 11th when milder air tries to make progress towards the UK in the south, possibly a heavy snow event here.

I think the mild air is unlikely to get far at all, and probably the whole country back under Polar Continental airmass by the 14th.

Remaining cold for the next week, very low nightime minima where snow is laying, and low maxima too.

I think milder air will make its way back gradually, but perhaps without a large snow event, probably more gradual. By the 22nd or thereabouts temperatures back to average in the South, perhaps slightly above in the far South West and over Ireland. Scotland remaining cold for a little time longer.

The month will probably end on quite a dreary note with chilly daytime maximas (4-5C) and nightime minimas around freezing.

Overall, a very cold month (Hale Winter cycle won't be broken), with the nightime minima perhaps being the biggest factor regarding the CET. Once snow is laying temperatures will really struggle.

    CET -0.3

Call this the "Winter of Discontent II"

  3. I was sure I had put my punt in but looking through I can't find it anywhere! Maybe I didn't. Owell, just for fun....

Low daytime maxima until the 10th, with a number of those nights having low or very low night time minima. This will help give a low CET for the first third of the month - this rising a tad maybe during the second week.

From about the 12th an area of high pressure will dominate the South especially. Scotland probably near normal but ofcourse this will not reflect in the CET. Freezing fog and low daytime minima will become more extensive, maybe dropping the CET down to around 2C for a time.

From the 18th the Atlantic will try its best to amake a return, maybe some trasitional snow, before the milder weather takes control completely on about the 21st. Continuing this way until the 26th (a green Christmas) before an Artic blast.

    Overall a CET of 3.1

  4. Well with the current patterns I definately wouldn't be going for above average! I'm saying that there will be a raw easterly around Christmas, giving some very low night time minima, and low daytime temps also.

So therefore i'm going for even colder than the NetWeather winter forecast and saying 4.1C

  5. Dry so far here, infact i've just been out with the electric hedge trimmer...try doing that in Wales today!

Send all the rain over here, I don't mind, this overcast dull weather is getting on my nerves, at least some nice heavy rain makes it a little more interesting!

    Temp: 14.8C

    RH: 87%

10 min average Windspeed: 8mph Gusting 14mph (seems very still here compared to other spots)

    Rainfall: 0

    Rainfall Rate -

    Pressure: 995.1 (falling)

  6. Still occasional light snow here from time to time. 4.1C, Dew Point -2C.

I agree TEITS, cloud amounts are certainly important at this time of year for any prolonged laying snow. I feel Sunday morning will be where this is most important, with snow showers giving a dusting over night in sub-zero temperatures, more overcast conditions and more prolonged snowfall with hold temperatures down for a good way through the morning.

Showers at this time of year rarely give a covering for long with the sun being much stronger, especially after 9am or so.

  7. Talking of streamers there appears to be one already running down the east coast maybe just starting to head into Norfolk, when the wind changes direction this streamer should start to move inland, not sure what its going to be off, probably a wintry mix with sleet and snow most likely I'd have thought given the time of day it will be when they show up.

Yes, i've just been looking at the radar, and those showers certainly look quite beefy.

I think it is very likely to be snow, as it is snowing moderatly here now on and off, and even in the lightest precipitation, it was all snow, nothing mixed in. Problem is that temperatures arn't enough to let anything lay this time of day.

    Now 4.1C here, Dew Point-1C

  8. Philip Avery's forecast now was fairly detailed, but the snow fall has been greatly reduced for sat and sun on his forecast. It looks like for Sunday the only area liable to see snow according to his forecast is the edge of Norfolk by the wash and a bit of Lincs, Northants. It excluded all of essex, suffolk, cambs and further south with a bit more chance in fact to the west. Looks like London will also miss out entirely. Can his forecast still be so wrong this close?

Never take those BBC graphics too seriously, they are only really a guide; very misleading usually. For example, they showed rain over me all day today, but this morning was only the odd few spots in the air before the cold front moved though later on.

  9. I have a feeling that during Sunday morning may be the best chance of any laying snow in the East. Snow showers during Saturday evening and though the night will hopefully give a covering, with overnight low below freezing. On Sunday morning, any persistant snow should lay well on anything that has fallen overnight, and the temperatures should reamain low whilst it continues to snow and be overcast. Probably anything we do see will be melting fast by late morning.

  10. Sunday looks interesting! Here is what the MetOffice are saying...

"More cloudy and less windy on Sunday, but with widespread rain, sleet and snow".

And their weather maps have a heavy snow symbol right on top of East Anglia. I would love for that to come off. The first winter with no snow in living memory here!! And some people saying this are in their 90s!

  11. To me it still looks as if day time temperatures will be too high for snow to settle through the weekend. I think at this time of year night time snowfall is what we need, especially with showers. As soon as the sun is out this time of year, temperatures take no time to shoot up and snow soon melts. Still, may be the first snow this winter here!!
