  1. it's rumbling more and more now, I hope I see something decent. What abouts are you then Suffolkboy?

Hi, i'm 10miles North of Ipswich, near Framlingham, yes I agree, lightening is getting more frequnt, but its all sheet lightning with all this North Sea low cloud still around! I'm looking forward to the heavy rain just as much as the lightning, but not much of either yet!?

  2. My local BBC weather said that it will be worst by about midday, with alot of lightning and torrential downpours around then. Looks like an exitingg day ahead weather wise! Few more bits of lightening here, only one strike every 15 mins or so though. MY new little puppy is scared, but she'll have to see her first thunder sometime I suppose, probably best young.

Not very heavy rain actually, even though the radar shows 25mm/hr, its actually only 3mm/hr - evaporation going on as its high level?

  3. Well the rain started here about 30 mins ago, just heard the first rumble of thunder, must have been 40 miles away or so though, jusdging by how it was not that loud, and rumbled for a long time, meaning lots of echoeing had gone on before it reacherd me. The heavy rain doesn't look far off me now - if this heavy stuff gets here soon, i may not be able to get out of the village for work! Fingers crossed B)

  4. Very humid feel to things outside tonight, still 14.8C and not realy dropping under all this cloud. I really need some more rain on my lawn, but my gut instinct is that these storms if any will be few and far between - one of those days when it pours down when you're ut doing something, and get home to find it bone dry! I havnt seen any decent lightning in ages, so i'm really hoping this comes off!

  5. We really need this low cloud to clear. Although having said that - if it looks good later i may consider a short drive out to the south east!

Met Office have warnings out now - up to 80mm of rain in parts, thats a huge amount!!!

Indeed, especially for these parts. I remember a large thunderstorm hitting one morning about 5 years ago, gave 15mm in the space on an hour, and that sent rivers way over, so 80mm in a day would cause me to be stuck in the village for the day - not that im complaining! :)

  6. An Autie of mine lives in Phoenix. I've been there many times, usuall in Summer and have never seen a thunderstorm there yet. She tells me that there is little warning to when these arew going to occur, but it usually follows a few cooler days (around 106F instead of the usual 118F seen most days). My Uncle tells me that it varies alot each year. One year they can be plagued by constant duststorms and thunderstorms, and other years only the odd small storm. I was amazed to hear though that sometimes these thunderstorms can last all afternoon, and right into the evening, although little rain is seen.

It's a great place to visit though, eating out is cheap and you get great service. Renting a car is the best way, although driving can get very boring when travelling lond distances. 200miles without a bend in the road get very tiresome!

  7. April Total -1.2mm , only one very short lived shower on the 26th, only lasting about 5 minutes, and covering an area 4 miles wide and 15 miles long according to the Netweather radar. Looks like another dry month has just started, sunglasses and watering cans out! :o

  8. Well I hadn't seen a drop of rain since 28th March, until Wednesday, when a small, sharp shower dropped 1.2mm, but that ofcourse evaporated off in no time at all, still, got that lovely earth smell afterwards. Digging the garden yesterday, it was bone dry down 4 inches or so, and its heavy clay here. Been watering the greens on the golfcourse everyday for the last 3 weeks, the ponds are already as low as they are in July, if this is to keep up for a bit longer, this summer looks like further hosepipe bans for sure.

ET this month - 72.4mm Rainfall total this month- 1.2mm

ET this year - 184.1mm Rainfall total this year - 144.8mm

There figures are calculated by my Davis vantage Pro 2, im not sure how much trust to put into it. However, according to this this month is well down, almost 3 inches, good job we had a very wet start to the year! Still, a deficit for when we should be having alot more rain than evapotranspiration, it's only natural.

  9. It's looking very close at the moment. I think it was 5.3mm up to the 23rd, but a lot of places in the west of the CET zone have seen 2-3mm in the past 24 hrs. Hardly a spot of rain in the forecast for the remainder of the month, it just depends how far north the rain band progress in the early hours of tomorrow. Atm, it's not looking like it will be going much further than a diagonal from Sussex, then north London to north Suffolk.

I have only seen a few spots this month, and I mean a few spots, had one tiny shower the other morning, not even enough to wet the ground or even worthy of putting windscreen wipers on. I have still seen 0mm this month, maybe 1mm tomorrow morning? All I can hope for then is thunderstorms untill the end of the month.

  10. I say... 13.6 A warm start with high pressure in control, maximas in the mid 20s some days, but cloud sometimes keeping night time temperatures up. A change to more unsettled weather around the end of the second week with low pressure trying to nudge in. Another week of warm weather after this as southerlies push in, maybe aproachin the 30C mark, maybe cooler and more unsettled by the last few days of May. Dry for the east and central areas of england, but perhaps the north of England, Wales, Ireland and Scotland seeing the most of any rain, but still below average in most of these areas.

  11. By the way, as the Metoffice site has alomost completely frozen due to the huge demand, it may be worth getting a subscription to the NetWeather radar, it's brilliant, it updates every 5 minutes and shows where snow is falling, for only £3.95 for one month!!?

PS. Can I have a discount for this NetWeather people? Does this still count as the referal system offer!!?? :whistling:

  12. Nice picture... I didn't think Suffolk had got that much either. Mind you showers, can always dump loads in one area, and only send down a few flakes 10 miles down the road. Thursday's event should be more widespread, for larger area's.

Precisely, it was a small shower moving very slowly, only 4 miles up the roads it is practically dry, the official depth was 5.5cm when i measured it just after the shower passed ;)

  13. Tell ya what the frost here is unbelievable already tonight, just had football training outside on a pitch which has artificial grass and it was -2.5c and the pitch was just covered white by frost and was frozen solid, and that was at 8-9pm, I can see -5 being reached here tonight, lowest of the winter so far I think.

Well I have just hit the magical -7C mark, with both of the other thrmomters backing this up, amzing what some snow cover can do! and this is in Suffolk! Will I see -10 tonight? I've never seen snow with a frost until now!

  14. suffolkboy, how much snow did you end up getting?

Amazing to think I'm just about 50 miles SSW and I had great sunshine throughout the day!

certainly if some of that snowcover is still there then your gonig to have a bitter old night, your idea may not be far wrong though if ther eis any breeze from the north then it may limit the temps a touch but don't be suprised if the temps drop like a stone for you.

Even where there hasn't been snow-fall with a cold airmass and clear skies for most I think tonight will be very cold -4/5/6's very likely to be quite widespread I reckon.

Well my official amount was 5.5cm, so just over 2 inches, ye, even more amazing is that only 4 miles up the road the is only a sprinkling of snow, i was right of the western edge of the shower, but it was the heaviest part of it!

Alarms galore upstairs from my Davis Weather Station, now dropped to -5.2C, amazing how the temperature plummets over snow fields!

  15. I could see the snow u your way, you did well. Is there still plenty lying? I bet its going to be cold over those snow fields.

Yes, the snow did begin to melt at about 2pm to about 4pm, but its soon refrozen, still about 2inches, here is a picture that I took earlier on in the day. I thinking maybe -8C tonight for me!?

  16. Tonight is going to be a real freeze up across alot of the the country! What is the lowest people are recording at the moment? I am seeing -4.4C at the now! I had to check it with another thermometer just to make sure there wasn't a problem with my weather station! Is anywhere colder? I have got lying snow which helps!

  17. Hi everyone, as promised, some pictures of the snow i saw today to get everyone in the mood! I can't believe it, we've had 2 inches, and 5 miles up the road only had a dusting! The first is taken about 11.30am when it first started, the second is just as the shower finally cleared. Sorry if they come out in the wrong way around, it's the first time i've put photos on here!
