  1. Totally agree with that - it's the weird stealth cauld winter of 2017-18. The truly mild (as in double digit) days have only been seen in sporadic clusters here, and barely at all at that. And the NWP charts are edging ever closer to the reliable and a wintry 80s throwback. Bit like this guy.
  2. Donned the protective gear and ventured into the TOORPing thread, and there does appear to be the start of decent model consensus that it will turn caulder heading into next weekend and beyond. The Met Office is fairly bullish about it being a decent and possibly prolonged cauld spell coming up. March 2013 demonstrated that for us kilters that can mean winter keeping on going well into meteorological 'spring'. Still not convinced there will be epic snaw, but the usual maxim applies: get the cauld in first - and then go find a lamppost to watch.
  3. @Hairy Celt Great snaps and that last one is a cracker. What a glorious sight.
  4. Was down in Glasvegas today. Squally showers there this arvo but nothing lying. Returned up the road this evening and Crieff and Comrie appear to have landed in the snawzone today. Looks like we had a decent wee fall here (enough for sledging, etc). Thawing now - sort of - but the roads were pretty skitey. And to top it all saw a couple of flashes of lightning to the N & NW just after 9pm this evening. This winter just keeps on giving - and it looks like the Candlemas 'forecast' is gonna be on the money this year. Cauld start to 'spring' anyone?
  5. Boom? Pishing it down with cauld sleety rain here this morning. Not enough altitude. Snaw over the moor to Braco.
  6. Was well chuffed. First time I'd ever seen them. Braw wee birds.
  7. The cauld rain eventually turned to snaw overnight Fri into Sat and gave us a covering by dawn on Sat before more cauld rain and sunshine dispensed with it. Then headed off to Glenshee. Cracking conditions. Wind today was 'brisk', but superb and bright. Bonus flock of snaw buntings were skittering about, too. Back here tonight and there's been a further snaw shower today which has left some flakes stuck to the pavements, roads and bin tops. Currently 0.1C/-4C. The stealth winter of 2017-18 continues...
  8. Comrie only managed a covering of snaw overnight, but the day is young! Place is looking bonnie in the wintry sunshine.
  9. Moderate snaw here for about the past hour. Settling readily. Currently 0.6C/-1C. Will take the @Hawesy prediction of 5cm and happily *bank* it.
  10. Does this mean you won't be producing another of the highlights of this stealth winter: the @Hawesybespoke Kilted snawdepth predictor table? And if not, does this mean we have to invoke the Kilted Snawdepth Pools Panel* to decide the results? *For younger viewers, back in the day, this was an invention (a bunch of blokes of the great and the good) to decide the Saturday fitba scores (when matches were postponed due to 'proper weather') in order to figure out whether anyone had won the pools jackpot. The pools were like Lotto, but involved much more complicated mental arithmetic, lesser prize money and the 1970s and were also reliant on nearly all the fitba matches being scheduled to kick off at 3pm on Saturday. I know, who'd ever indulge such madness now, eh?!
  11. Oooooffffttt! Looking at the charts this evening and it's a veritable snaw & cauldfest from Fri/Sat right through to the realms of Formula One - and even in Lala land, it's only struggling to prog average/near average temps at best. A steadily repeating pattern this winter. The mild days have been few and far between. Ice days ahoy and a fair few whumphings on the way for many of us kilters. Winter 2017-18 is stealthily edging its way to being one of the more notable efforts of recent years. Could yet become memorable. 'Mon the snaw!
  12. TY - chuffed to have landed a winter month spot on at last! Far chillier up here than for the folks in the C.E.T. Maybe Feb will be different. Once again, many thanks to all those who make this happen - always very interesting and great fun, too. Cheers, PG.
  13. Well, this would do: a tad chilly and potentially snawtastic, albeit someway off just yet, so usual health warnings about Formula One, etc, etc.
  14. The big snawthaw is well underway here now, too, albeit it took its time - we stayed sub-zero until after 8am this morning and only maxed out at a balmy 3.8C this arvo. Still 6cm of level snaw lying where it's been undisturbed all week. Doubt it's going to hang on very much longer though. So, when's the next lot incoming then? Looks like we could have a shot at some transient snaw on Friday - and after that it's 'beyond the cusp of the reliable timeframe' or whatever the correct strawclutching terminology is that they use in the TOORPing thread these days...
  15. PS: saw this travelsize snawman on my travels on Friday. 10/10 for effort!
  16. An absolutely epic weekend. Further 5cm of snow on Friday, arctic air and perfect alpine conditions for sledging on Saturday - which was an ice day, too. Hardly a breath of wind. Overnight minimum of -7.9C and further snaw today, starting just before 1pm and giving a further 2cm before turning to cauld snizzle/drizzle/wintry mix though still sub-zero. Currently -1.0C/-2C and has just turned back to snaw again. A magical week for the wee folk (and for us big weans). Some snaps of the highlights attached. I don't think this winter's done. Plenty more in the snaw tank yet.
  17. The heavier stuff duly arrived just before half 8. Had a lively wee drive over to Gleneagles station in another temporary whiteoot. Skidded the car to a halt in the car park. Epic snaw!
  18. Just a further covering overnight here, but looks like there is more prolonged and heavy stuff incoming.
  19. A further top-up overnight. Nearing half a foot of snaw here now. Kudos to @Hawesy - great prediction skills. Any ideas for tonight's Lotto numbers? Intermittent sunshine and snow this morning. Slight thaw underway, too. Overnight minimum of -2.8C. Currently 0.4C/1C. Turning into a memorable snaw snap - or maybe a snaw spell.
  20. Had a lively drive back from Crieff just after 4pm. Left here: roads clear, even after the regular top-ups throughout the day. One very heavy shower - and another temporary whiteoot - later and it was a crawl back from Crieff in a caterpillar conga line behind a bus, taking about 40 mins. Has continued to snaw at will and now we're safely below freezing point, it's topping up nicely. -0.4C/-1C. Snaps from a couple of hours ago. Was a mere 3 inches then.
