  1. I’m currently working between Birmingham and Lichfield, all I’ve encountered so far are patches of drizzle. A lot less snow on the ground closer to Lichfield too.
  2. Don’t forget the warning was mainly for the icy conditions, last night’s light snowfall has made things quite slick this morning.
  3. Don’t forget how last Saturday (I think?!) the band was sinking south as it moved south west at the same time. If that makes sense!
  4. Arrived in the city centre for work. As usual, the most snow appears to be around Gornal and Tipton. Still only around a cm. More of a dusting when I got to junction 1 at West Bromwich. A few light flurries in the headlights too. Surprised to see there’s even a good dusting here in Birmingham city centre. The main roads are in good shape. A bit slippery around Tipton station and Tipton leisure centre on Alexandra Road though. Plenty of gritters out this morning.
  5. Just woke up to get ready for another shift out on the iron road. I see we’ve had a dusting of snow while I’ve been asleep. Could have parked down my road after all! Looking at what’s going on, it might be I have more difficulty getting home at lunch time than driving in now. I’m on standby at work today, so could be sent anywhere! So bear with me if my observations seem inconsistent today!
  6. Just be aware, it may be below freezing now, but temperatures and dew points can rise quickly as systems spill over. And there doesn't need to be much of a rise to put us in marginal territory. Not wishing to put a downer on things, but I've seen it where we're several degrees below freezing before the cloud and precipitation arrive, only for it to rise suddenly and give us cold rain. On the plus side, there's evidence of only a small rise to our north west...but for some areas, that might be enough. There have been a few reports of sleet and rain in the northwest thread...but thankfully, not too many. We'll have to wait and see what the later, heavier band gets up to with temperatures/dew points. I'm sure some on here will see snow...but it is something to be a little mindful of.
  7. I’ve just arrived back from work to find Upper Gornal still shrouded in thick frost and fog, just as I left it at 4 this morning! Everywhere else I’ve been today while working my trains is now in brilliant winter’s sunshine. Parked up near the main road, now to see if bleary eyed me remembered where I parked in the morning! Hopefully, there’ll be snow to remind me!
  8. Thanks for the replies. It’ll do no harm leaving my car nearer to the main road. As already said, Gornal can get more than other places, and my cul de sac is uphill to the main road! Once I’m down the hill and heading towards Tipton, I’ll decide whether I should continue to Birmingham or divert to Wednesbury and get the first tram. I used to work on the Metro and I know how hard my ex colleagues work keeping the trams moving in wintry weather!
  9. I’ve got to set off for work at 4am in the morning. Will the snow be here by then? In other words, is it worth leaving my car on the main road tonight in case I can’t get out of my cul de sac?!
  10. Bits of very fine sparkly snow floating around where it’s foggy. Need a lamp to see it though. Very pretty.
  11. Just watched the Met Office forecast for the week ahead. Pretty uninspiring really. Some rain, sleet or snow around, but mostly dry and cold. Then a hint of milder air going into the weekend as the high re-orientates itself. (Potentially a settled, decent weekend if the high can position itself correctly) And that's it really. Looks like for those of us who were lucky enough to get a covering of snow last week, that's it for now. Thanks to everyone for their insight and contributions in this thread over the past week. I'm sorry that not everyone could share reports of snow. See you for the next one...let's hope it's not too far away.
  12. The stream of showers is at an absolute perfect angle, and it’s all rain! Normal service is resumed. Hopefully a true easterly will come at some point this winter.
  13. I have a hunch we’ll see more this winter. Winter’s these days seem to be all or nothing. We don’t seem to get poor winters with the odd snowy interlude any more. It’s either a winter with a few snowy events, or a winter with nothing at all. Sadly, I have no science to back it up. The last week has been good...but we all know better is possible. And for the majority of Southern England, it’s been a very poor cold spell so far. So for them at least, let’s hope better is on the way.
  14. Heavy rain here. A few flakes mixed in. Ah well, we have done very well so our luck was due to run out. Really lashing it down out there...horrid.
  15. Heavy snow here now and another fresh covering.
  16. Ok, shut me up if needed but... The showers are more aligning east to west... ...Sooooo... they're coming at us from more from towards Lincolnshire way... ...where there are no hills... ...see where I'm going with this? Wishful thinking? Probably.
  17. Yep, as I thought, the heavy blob is sliding away to our west. Got a light flurry going on here anyway. I'm also watching the blob over Nottingham, but think the whole lot might continue to break up so hard to say. But yeah...really can't complain!
  18. We might just miss out on that heavier blob here. It's moving SW as it sinks south, the back end of that blob might have slipped a tad too far SW as it sinks south over us, putting us in the bit in the middle that has already weakened. It's certainly tight. (And I am being quite specific for my location)
  19. Well there is heavy snow within the warning area now. And a warning is not a forecast, it warns about what has the potential to happen in the given area. And anywhere in that area has potential for heavy snow. Although I agree that 18:00 as an end time might be too soon...unless they're expecting it to weaken.
  20. Dew Points are very marginal around the West Midlands right now...as the reports of rain in Stourbridge prove. Should be alright later on, but right now...there's not much room for error!
  21. I think that's what is giving the illusion of it pivoting. We should all see a period of moderate to heavy snow...but that big area coming down from north of York is obviously the one giving the Met Office concern because that'll give a quite prolonged period of heavy snow. And if you look, that's heading right into the warning area. It's going to go right down the Transpennine route. Leeds, Manchester, Chester and the very northwest tip of our region are in for a very interesting evening. The rest of us will still see something, but it won't be as for long as it will be for those areas. That's my take on it. I may be wrong...but I can't see a pivot....yet anyway. Edit: And for those feeling that they've been very unlucky this week, watch the radar sequence and focus on the city of York...how close? Poor souls.
  22. You can see from the shape of the weather warning where the heaviest stuff is most likely to go. But there seems to be a lot of activity around. So I think we'll all see at least something. We've already just had a moderate snow shower move through here leaving a fresh dusting.
  23. Absolutely. We have been incredibly lucky. Look at yesterday too...on the day it was primed for rain only, we got away with just patchy drizzle. This is still the West Midlands right? We haven't magically teleported somewhere else have we?
  24. Light to moderate snow here for the past hour. Some heavier bursts. Left a fresh light covering, nothing like the start of the week though. But looking crisp and white out there again.
  25. On the 2nd February 2009, we got a direct streamer from the Lincolnshire coast. Not only did we get a lot of snow from constant showers, but they even gained a bit of intensity as they passed over Birmingham. Was a great day. Leicester, Birmingham and us were under the streamer and it was exciting reading the reports from those cities to our east before we got hit. A great example of how we can really benefit from Easterlies. As long as the showers make landfall between Humberside and King’s Lynn somewhere.
