  1. Afternoon everyone, after a day of thawing the snow seems to be landing back on the cars outside here in Coatbridge, although looking at the radar it seems about to stop soon!

epic day here just went out and measured depth around about 13cm with drifts slightly deeper, seems like snowline is about 100m+ and anything below that has just had snow/sleet falling on wet ground. To anyone in Glasgow get yourself to high ground above 150m snow is deep :) East Kilbride will be looking good to I imagine.

Also could this be the start of something epic here? possibly more snow to come?

  2. Thanks you guys, may as well give you an update on what is going on here.

By the looks of it 5-8cm of fresh snow, snow plough has wiped the snow on the road, and literally 30 seconds later the road is covered again. I live on a busy road so there Will be disruption in the Leeds area. Snow is moderate to heavy and is swirling around in the easterly wind. Temperatures are marginal at -0.3c but there are reports of lying snow at 100M in Leeds.

So basically you guys will do really well as it should have turned to rain by now if the GFS was correct and I doubt it will be too marginal.

nothing marginal about -0.3 mate :) Cheers

  3. I think the heavier stuff is going to fall between 00z and 03z over central parts of northern england. The pennines should get most snow, then high ground in northumberland/cumbria (obviously less the lower down you are) before fizzling out before it reaches scotland..

Apart from above 250 metres I cant see places like glasgow/edingburgh getting snow that will keep building wed through to saturday, I think there will be a decent covering (5-7cm) at some point but it should thaw through the day.

Apart from the highlands/southern uplands which will obviously get lots of snow (in excess of 9 inches) I would expect avemore to get the lion share of the snow, amazing how much snow aviemore gets considering its only 1000ft smile.gif (where i live that would normally just make the difference of a couple of inches in depth)

yeah aviemore is at 800 feet above sea level and I am at 700 feet above sea level so I just dont know where its at the momment could end up being a great snow event or a damp squib heres hoping! Also still have snow patches from last months snow. Where the snow had been ploughed!Cheers

  4. Is it? Sunday through to Tuesday looks very interesting for most of Scotland.

I reckon that some of the higher parts of Gleann Mòr might reach around -20'C, Tulloch Bridge looks like it might pull it off.

As an aside, I was reading an interesting article which was discussing that parts of Strathspey might have actually reached -30'C in past cold spell but due to lack of weather stations this has gone missed.

yeah I have always thought that, that somewhere in Scotland temperatures have been below -30 but we just havent had weather stations in the areas, albeit some of the areas will be extremely remote hence really difficult to record these mega low temps.Cheers

  5. Hi all :good: interesting times ahead, some absolutely mental looking charts in the gfs at T+250 widespread blizzards across most of Scotland shame its in FI, time will tell hoping for another special event.

Although ideally would like it to be widespread blizzards then snow hangs around for a week then a nice warm spring :) as the longevity of the last cold spell was just so harsh even myself who loves the cold grew tired of it!Cheers

  7. ten inches of snow thaw in half an hour I really doubt it mate! maybe 4 inches but ten inches in half an hour thats extreme! an inch every three minutes hmm really unlikely! That would take a seriously mad temp swing for that to happen like 1degrees to 20 degrees and even still that would be unlikely!

  8. I wonder about ground temperatures, partly because of an interest in how plants respond to changes in air and ground temps... but I kind of doubt that ground gets really that cold under the snow, and this may be a bit of a downer for those expecting to retain their snow for many days even when the air is above zero. Snow prevents the ground from getting really cold because of its insulating properties.

I feel an experiment coming on...

well at 210metres asl if I dont get snow then what else can most folk expect!heres hoping could be very special here but we will wait and see :wallbash:

  9. Sad but true ! :cc_confused:

Edit: back to 0c/DP -3c at Embra airport so the marginality game is in full swing over the coming hours and maybe days.

One consolation (stating the bleedin obvious for a second...) is that these are air temps. The ground temp must be at least a degree or so colder (its often 2, 3 or 4 degreees colder depending).... so lying snow isn't in line for a big hit any time soon.

this could be a very special snow event here really hoping it comes off as this could end up spectacular here :wallbash: Cheers
