  1. Hello everyone,

I haven't read the latest 9 or so pages so will have to catch up, bare with me if it has already been said. However it seems that looking at the radar returns due south of me in Winchester/Basingstoke etc. and also some parts to my north must have a good covering already 3 inches or more maybe?

My measurement at 6pm for what it is worth currently was 5cm laying snow at Newbury.

I hope everyone has heeded the warnings and are safe at home, the M4, A34 etc. must be chaos right now.

    Snowy Cheers

  2. Hi,

A few light flakes falling here in Newbury Berkshire but definitely expecting mucho snowo before long. Most Favourable areas so far look like being to me, South Oxfordshire/North West Wiltshire, they can expect a pasting real soon if not already!

Air Temp 0.4c and DP -0.6c so almost identical readings to the event before christmas. If these temps remain in this region that must be a good sign.

    Take Care everyone.

  3. said,

I was a tiny baby but my Mum said it was terrible!

    Sorry,

Totally O.T but that remark made me chuckle, now I MUST ask what Dad's thoughts were 37 years ago on 21st January.

Anyway back to the cold discussion, I do like the latest output, scary and you soon seen see the Newspapers picking up on the chat in these forums!

Daily Mail - 40 foot snowdrifts ice over the whole of the U.K (just North Wales actually) and we can expect weeks of this say 'official forcasters'

The Sun on Page 3 - Lovely Models here say 'Netweather' as rather chilly air reaches Great Britain in the coming few days

    Anyway, soon for bed!

Keep it up Guys n Gals (over 800 on the forum tonight!)

  4. hello stormboy

think at the moment south of M4 will be rain until late wednesday/thursday.

The problem is that down here the temps over the last few days have risen and so any surface cold has gone, if it does snow i don`t think it will settle for long.

    Hi there Stoxs,

Too true about the M4 barrier yet again, more interestingly it could be a dumping on the downs around Combe/Chute again though possibly?

The Temps in my sheltered valley location have not been much to write about too much recently, however.

Ok 7.1c max (Sat) 6.1c max (Sun) but only 1.5c max (and that's at the current time) today , it's a shame the snow cover has all gone after about 8 days of it lying here in Newbury.

Anyway, I'm certainly not in despair as we have cracking COLD potential in the reliable timeframe too.

  5. Hello,

Given that no one down south is really expecting snow in the reliable timeframe, I am however disappointed with my local conditions as of current time (22:54BST 28/12/09)

Alongside the hopes in the General Model Discussion, I am a little disillusioned.

Air temp currently 1.4c DP 1.2c and rising slowly, mind you AT was 0.3c just over 1 1/2 hours ago. wallbash.gif

o people think the cold air is going to dig in soon, or will it be cold rain in my neck of the woods for the next 48 hours or so, if the precipitation reaches here at all of course! nonono.gif

    Good Luck all.

    Cheers

  6. Hello,

It ended up with 90mm of level snow here in Newbury, Berkshire. Not bad for this location in recent times.

I think it must have cleared my location at around midnight so a 11 hour event.

Air Temp -1.8c and DP -2.2c as I type. How are the models going to cope with all this lying snow around, short time forecasts at the least will possibly be wholly inaccurate.

    Snowy Cheers

  7. Hope there's good news for most people by now on their journeys back, some horrendous stories out there.

I hate to be a killjoy but if the NW radar is anything to go by, some parts of the central south i.e. North Hants, East Wilts and maybe me in Berkshire look like getting plastered in the next few hours! Or am I reading it wrong? Could be 6 to 8" lying snow here in Newbury by early tomorrow morning.

During this event (now nearly 10 hours duration) the strangest thing is the consistency of the Air temp and subsequent dew point, barely budged 0.2c either way ever since the start at 1pm.

Still 0.2c and -0.2c dewpoint and light snow flurries at this moment.

Eyes to the skies and on the radar.

    Take Care

  8. Hello all.

Snowy Cheers from Newbury, time for the measurements as of 6pm on this 21st. The shortest day providing the longest of journeys, horrendous for many I should think.

    Ok, some figures.

Air Temp 0.2c, steady around this figure for a few hours now.

DP Temp -0.2c, reached 0.0c briefly hence sleet

    Barometer 985.6mb still falling slowly.

Level snow depth 50mm maybe 55mm and still the snow falls.

NW Radar suggests more precipitation for several hours in my location yet!

    Have Fun and Take Care

    STORMBOY.

    Less of that cheek Lookup.

  9. Hello,

Just a thought, i'm normally a lurker as I have said before (not scientifically minded like the top posters in here). cc_confused.gif

But, are there people out there/in here who believe in the cycles, i.e. 10 year/20 year patterns. I'm just wondering as it has been posted by others on many different forums in the past.

Has it not been stated that harsh winters in the years gone by were the years such as 62/63 then 81/82 then 90/91 and maybe coincidently 09/10. Anyway history will tell us whether there is something in it, 10/20/10 etc.

I certainly believe in the chances of something different/unique this winter as many of the peeps on here have stated. Clearly the floods (extreme in parts of the u.k) must come to an end and peace/calm must be restored just like, in the cycles mentioned above i suppose, in theory.

Sorry mods, move to the appropriate thread if you feel this is unnecessary.

Anyway, please continue to keep us less informed, well informed.

    Now back to lurking

    Yours interested,

    STORMBOY

  10. Hello,

Sorry Mods if this is not the way things are done, i'm more of a lurker than poster, howvere I want to share this morning's episode of a nasty squall. A top gust of 48mph (good for my sheletered location), a rain rate of 26mm/hr with 1.4mm falling in 6 minutes and a air pressure kick of 0.9mb in 5 minutes with the passage of the squall. All the data acquired from my Davis VP2 but I was awoken, by I imagine, the winds at the time. No Thunder heard for sure.

I attach the NW radar grabs at the time in question.

  11. Indeed Joneseye, from another Newburian.

I think it could well pass over us at about 2am if not before, here's hoping :yawn

3.8mm since midnight now and peak gust now 31mph since midnight, make that 33mph just this minute.

    Oh please get here soon!

    STORMBOY

hitting us hard right now, Joneseye lookout

  12. morning all.. looking forward to the front passing over Newbury in the next couple of hours! It really is quite a narrow band, however some heavy rain has formed in front and behind where we are.

  13. Hello all,

2 strong coffees and counting, 28 beers (joking!) and I am still hanging on in here. It's still an hour away or more from my location judging by the NW radar but I desperately wanna stay up :yawn and witness the action.

It is raining slightly here, well 2.4mm has fallen since 00:00GMT and the barometer is dropping well, 995.1mb as I type. Strongest gust since midnight is 29mph which in my sheltered location is fair...ish

Is it still going to be worth the effort, I am thinking of sound recording the evidence so I hope it comes along soon.

yep, I've been keeping an eye on that...Looks like it will skirt just to the north of Brum looking at the hourly loop, but should reach me in the next 45 mins or so...

    Hello shark,

I have the nw radar subscription but can you confirm how I can achieve such a grab image as the one you have achieved. Sorry mods, but I am curious and btw 'you are the best and you know you are!' on the web.

Sorry, back to me drink. drunk.gif

Incidentally 10.4mm since midnight (annual total 521mm) so far here in Newbury, Berkshire and looking interesting overnight and into tomorrow if you like rain and squalls that is. Hoping it dries out up north somewhen soon.

    Cheers

    Stormboy

Sussed it, Traditional view, wow I like that much better.

  15. Where is Storm boy?

got some bigger gusts here but I have no idea how much as not got equipment. ...storm boy???

Interesting about the convection that Paul wrote and the temperature rising. that I take it will contribute to the effect tomorrow?

I do hope people are sensible here and take heeds of all the warnings.

    Hi,

My current readings are 989.8hpa, 12.5c temp and 13mm day total rainfall as at 22:42 so nothing special yet!

I just popped outside and the leaves are all over the place but so far my highest gust is 23mph and that was much earlier in the day. I live by a woodland edge and I certainly hope the mighty oaks n beeches stand up well even if I do like to hear the wind howl and give us a good ole blow.

Polar Bear, if you have access, check out the latest NW radar image for our neck of the woods.

Keep the updates coming guys n gals.

  16. Welcome to netweather forum stormboy,

I hope you join in on many many discussions, and enjoy your stay, its a very warm and friendly community.

My names Lewis and my favourite weather and field i consider myself most experienced in is during the winter months "snow".

    Hello Lewis,

Thanks for the kind comments. My post count says 8 or something so perhaps I'm not such a lurker as I thought. I sure learn loads in this place and it is such a friendly place as you say. Heres hoping for an interesting night ahead.

  17. Hello again PB.

Yes, i have some equipment ermmmm.. sorry i've had a drink! Anyway, indeed there are a fair few weather stations shown on the web around our area. Go checkout wunderground.com. As for the guy you mention in Thatcham, I actually know him, his name is Steve Kelly. Enjoy the wild weather and stay safe.

    Now 12mm here @ 21:22 and 990.7 hpa.

    Take Care

  18. Hello Guys n Gals and hello Polar Bear, I see another Newburian is in the place

As normally I'm a lurker on here, I've come out of the closet. I greatly appreciate all the news you guys n gals are putting out. It's interesting tracking the progress of the front so keep the info coming, particularly those maps are of real use. My Davis is picking up all the details minute by minute and I've had some interesting pressure rises and falls in the last hour. Top gust only 21m.p.h so far.

This is my first post so please be gentle. .

  19. Hi Osbourne,

I had and still have the exact same problem as you. Sometimes it can last a day or two without getting the error and then other times it happens several times a day. I actually rang Davis in the usa regarding this and they kindly sent me an insulator type thingie (slips over cable with magnets either side) free of charge in the post. The other advise they gave me at the time was to download the latest software version and/or switch to battery power only. I still tend to leave it plugged into the mains and continue to get the error.

Let me know if you do ever solve this issue as it seems Davis cannot.

    Kind Regards

    Tony

    Hi Osbourne,

Replying to my own post I just checked an email that linked the following

    http://www.davisnet.com/support/weather/software_sftwr.asp

Try this and so will I as there appears to have been another update.

    Regards

    Tony (Stormboy)

  20. Hi all,

Thanks for the many responses to my question ref: buying a Weather Station. Well as you have guessed from the Header I have purchased a Davis Vantage Pro 2. As of the 26th September, I have entered the world of downloading and constant streaming of data to my pc. The next step is to get it setup on the web and I would like to be added to the Netweather Weather Stations map if at all possible.

    Kind Regards

    STORMBOY
