  1. Yep, shame but the snow from the feature that crossed the N Sea and came ashore in Northumbria is not developing on its eastern flank so we are going to remain dry for a few hours yet although it is already below freezing here (-0.2°C) with a DP of -2.7°C. Pity as anything falling with these temps would definately be snow.

Let's see what happens once this little low is to the SW of us and the NE flow re-establishes....

  2. In reply to Lewis' comment earlier: no we didn't get any snow, it fizzled out before it got here. dry.gif Looks a bit iffy on the snow stakes now but I guess showers can pep up anytime - we shall see.

FYI current temp is 0.4°C with a DP of -1.8°C. Alas during the last hour the sugar coating on the roads has melted although it is still there on old ice and on frozen ground. Wind is currently NNW at 4kt.

Light Without Heat: what is WD software? I have Heavy Weather and boy is it just! Doesn't record Max/Mins etc. I looked at Cumulus on the web but it says that it doesn't go well will LaCrosse stations, which I am sure mine is although it is badged differently. Advice would be appreciated.

    Muff.

  3. Slow temp rise this morning (unsurprisingly!), has now struggled up to 0.9°C with a DP of -1.7°C. Min last night was -2.4°C at 08:37 this morning. Has now clouded over from the north, with the wind currently NW. This I presume is the local circulation from that feature off the Northumbrian coast.

We may get a bit of snow shortly but looking at the radar that feature I mentioned appears to be moving inland and most of the shower activity appears to be on its western and northern flanks. Oh well, we shall see: certainly is bitter outside now.

Happy New Year to eveyone who missed my last post last year - it was the only one after the thread was announced as closingwacko.gif

  4. Overcast here with a light E wind. Currently 2.5°C with a DP of -5.4°C - the latter has been dropping all day as the air gets drier and now everything has dried up: even the small puddle on my patio! smile.gif The small amount of remaining snow must be sublimating like crazy although the temp is low.

If I am honest I am not expecting anything tonight, however, the increase in cloud and the dropping DP are making me wonder.... However, I think it is still a little too warm.

Let's see what happens this eveniing: I am staying at home and will watch BBC Scotland's annual Hogmanay bash with Jackie Bird on Sky - how sad is that!

  5. Lewis, still dry in Bev but dark to the south and east. Temp here is 4.1°C with a dewpoint of -3.2°C so will only snow in showers with cold air descending.

Interestingly showers are coming in from the NE yet my backgraden station has been showing East to SE all morning. Is there a bit of low level shear around? There is certainly upper level shear: cirrocumulus was coming in from the west this morning at a fair old lick whilst at lower levesl the cumulus was coming in from the east!

All in all, very interesting weather at the mo.

Hopefully will get some snow before I go back to work on Monday....

  6. Temp currently 4.2°C, highest today was 4.8°C just after 2pm. Dewpoint has been gradually dropping all day and is now -2°C. We did have some showers this morning and one of these had some sleet and even a very brief (20 second) spell of snow: I know, I was walking the dog!

I figure the dewpoint dropping is a good sign as it can only mean that more dry continental air is now being entrained in the easterly wind. Eventually this will come to dominate as much of the N Sea warmth is mixed out. This should leave us with cold air and colder uppers (so long as this upper warm front mves South as forecast) moving over a warm N Sea. This can only mean one thing, snow rolleyes.gif However, for the mixing out be effective it is important that the easterly wind remains strong, if it does not then there is more time for the warmth of the N Sea to mix in with a resultant rise in air temperature.

All in all, I do feel that the fall in the DP is good news and, combined with the small trough shown on the FAX chart, we have a good chance of some snow tomorrow.

I'm beginning to feel more confident now: shame about yesterday's LP though dry.gif Coming from W Wales originally, I was hoping this was going to give them something to shout about. Oh well, there is still time this winter - that's the great thing, there is still time this winter. It is still only December! cold.gif

  7. I'm off to bed now but temp has dropped 0.3°C since midnight and is now 4.3°C, which is still really warm and I have just been out and it feels it. However, the big news is is that it still dry but my DP has now reached 0°C. the lowest it has been since yesterday evening.

Precip still seems to be to the SW of here and does not appear to be changing much in nature, according to Raintoday. As to the argument about the positioning of today's low, I don't know if the GFS was right or not, however, the mild sector definately reached here around 05:30 this morning and has been here ever since. This was much further North than the ECM suggested so I guess some brownie points are in order for the much maligned GFS: it has certainly put a big dent in the local snow cover which I was certain on Sunday night would survive until the next snowfall. Now it is touch and go, especially if the temps remain this high all night.

Will check back in the morning: night all.lazy.gif

  8. Still dry here but the temp has gone up 0.2 deg to 4.6 deg C in the last half an hour and the Dew Point has also risen from 0.0 to 0.3 deg C.

Raintoday shows rain to our south and sleet to the SW, dunno if it is going to progress this far. Interestingly earlier on today you could see the showers in the N Sea being driven this way in an easterly wind, now this is happening further North, around Newcastle: all movement of precipitation in this area is now from West to East, although at ground level the wind is still easterly.

  9. Been dry now here since this morning and the thaw is still progressing although this is helping the road conditions.

Wind is Easterly and not very strong, 6 knots max I have had it but I do have a sheltered location.

Temp is steady 4.4 deg C now for most of the last hour but has been over 5 deg C today, which is very high and I was expecting much lower after the hard frost last night and the developing easterly. With a dewpoint currently of 0.1 deg C I am not confident of anything this evening. The talk is now of Thursday - just like last week the jam is always postponed although, granted, it did eventually arrive although the mild weather that was only supposed to affect the South did get this far North and has lasted more than the couple of days originally promulgated.

The charts a couple of days ago (within the reliable timeframe) were showing blizzards down South and convective showers up here. Neither has really materialised and now we are talking about Thursday.

Why does this always seem to happen? Why does it ALWAYS downgrade even when it appears nailed? wallbash.gif

Don't get me wrong, I have loved the cold spell but I really was beginning to think this was the appetiser before the feast and now it appears the latter may be a snack.

    OK rant over!

  10. Big upgrade for precipitation into Thursday with a possible trough, N yorkshire, East Yorkshire could get a fair bit tease.gif

    Lewis

I think this is because of the occluded fronts, the warm front over us with the cold front undercutting, so you get the 2 difference's with the warm front the higher cloud, cold front the lower?

I'm not 100% on it, but i'm pretty sure thats what it is.

    Lewis

Or it could have something to do with the thickness, with us been on the border line of 530 and 540.

    530 at 500-850hpa and 540 on the 500-1000hpa.

BTW! 12Z = SNOW FEST FOR EAST COAST COUNTIES, N YORKSHIRE AND EAST RIDING OF YORKSHIRE AND N LINCS!

    Lewis

Thanks Lewis, I think you are onto something with the fronts.

Major thaw here today mad.gif Yesterday stared warm then went cold and down to -4.1 deg C overnight but rained here at about 05:45 - there was hoar frost at 05:30!

    What's your current temp?

    Muff

  11. Interesting post about wind directions at Emley Moor on previous thread. I noticed this when I woke up this morning. When looking through skylight, higher clouds were moving East whilst the cumulus at lower levels were moving West. 180 degrees of wind shear: yes I know there is a formula for working this out in relation to height!

Nevertheless, there was a massive difference in wind direction over a very little difference in height as those clouds moving East were not of the 'alto' variety.

    Any theories?

  12. Large contrast in temperatures then in a short distance Beverley is only about 40miles away ohmy.gif . -1.6 °C here currently and its not been above freezing all day.

Been a feature of late. Very surprised by the max today: must be the effect of the N Sea on this side of the Wolds although the wind speed here has been zero all day. However, the clouds are moving slowly NW so the air is coming from that direction.

Temp has dropped back now, it is 2.4 deg C with the dew at -0.7 deg C. Let's see what the next few days bring: it certainly is interesting at the mo...

Well, a bit further north than you and still a lot of snow. Just been into Driffield and it's getting thinner there with some green patches.

Hit 2.6 today, I guess the snow cover keeps the temp down a bit. Car parks in Driff are non negotiable on foot!

My drive is exactly like that and today I have been out in my tee shirt scraping a path to the equally bad road which has a 2" layer of compacted ice on it that isn't going anywhere fast.

Am off to the panto in Brid this evening so will see the conditions around Driff for myself: I haven't ventured out so far due to the road conditions but I do have front row seats and excited kids......rolleyes.gif

Temp down to 1.9 deg C now so I guess a hard frost tonight. For info, the snow cover here is probably now about 25% but this is very patchy: some places are still completely covered and others snowless.

  13. Went to bed last night with the snow having stopped around 11:15. Later in the night I noticed it was raining and when I got up this morning a thaw had set in. However, as the day has gone on the thaw has slowed and everything is still covered although the road outside is now brown, not white, but is still covered.

I suppose the most intersting feature of the weather now is the fog which is getting thicker and thicker. Visibility now is les than 200m and, even as I write, it is noticably getting thicker.

I am at a loss to know what will happen next: colder or warmer? Charts show lots of lows circulating about one another with occluded fronts.

I guess wait and see but it does look like we will be white tomorrow after all...unless it chucks it down with rain this evening.
