Finally had some real snow action
Have had two heavy showers in the past hour and now have a dusting of snow lying on the grass, tarmac and everywhere and it is not melting. Sky to the east now looking good too as does the radar.
I was losing faith this morning but now, once again, I am a believer.
Well done Lewis for not being a doubting Thomas!

Why so doom and gloom, we are getting 99% of our showers falling as snow, and hail!! it's not rain, and the coldest air has not kicked in yet, neither has the temps!!!!! or the precip.
Come on think before you keep posting negative posts.

And the wind wow! blowing things around, getting bags and all sorts blowing in from nextdoor! Highest gust hit 24mph
Lewis, I've been really excited now for a week. I waited....patiently....for Monday night/Tuesday morning and....nothing just very cold rain. Then I waited for Wednesday and....again, nothing except cold rain. I then waited for last night and, guess what, cold rain and no snow on the ground when I woke up.
First of all the cold uppers were coming in Sunday, then Tuesday, then Wednesday, then last night. Now it's this evening. I am not all despondent and doomy and gloomy I am just getting desperate. It just always seem to be 'jam tomorrow.' Even with the best synoptics for years, it appears to be jam tomorrow.
Promise me the snow will come otherwise I will lose all respectibility with my kids who have now been waiting all week!

Just had the heaviest shower of the day here: 90% graupel but a bit of snow. It lied on the grass but has now melted as has the partial covering on the road. It is just too warm: I guess it must be the N Sea temp that is the problem.
I am not confident now we are going to get much over the next couple of days: just wintriness in light showers I think

Graupel shower again now: there was also one 20 minutes or so ago when I was out with the dog.
Still not quite cold enough for my liking. Will the real deep cold ever actually arrive? I am starting to get worried.
Yesterday was a let-down for me, it rained all day and stayed ay 5-6 degrees, pretty much the warmest it has been all week.
Graupel is settling on the grass buit not on the tarmac at the mo. I am still hopeful the real cold will come but it is taking its time....

Yes freakish conditions the weather front stalled over swales given 20 foot snow drifts.
Yep, remember it well: lived in Pembroke at the time. It was better than 1978.
Now living in Beverley and I feel the models are promising us a winter the like of which we haven't seen since 1982. That said that was just one (although a once in a lifetime) event. I really do feel with the teleconnections, this is a winter we will be telling our grandchildren about.

Heavy rain on ands off overnight. This morning cold, raw and overcast with a breeze from the NE. Took the dog for a walk and saw a flash of lightning high in the sky to the NE: very lucky to see it actually, was watching the police helicopted at the time.
During the last hour the rain hase been torrential at times and, although I have seen no more lightning, there has been constant loud (near) sprites on am (Radio Five Live) and www.Bridlingtonweather.co.uk has been showing strikes nearby over the North Sea.
Sky is now really dark in this direction.....
Could this be my first storm since the summer? If so, it will be a pleasant surprise.

Been quiet here during this spell, no complaints really as I come from the west coast and don't like really strong winds. Thunder and lightning, now that is a different matter
Not really too hopeful here for the next few days. Next Spring more like..... -
Rain gas just started and the wind is getting up. Beverley appears to be on the N end of a bowing section of the line as it approaches.
Need to go to bed really.......

I leave home at 07:10 each morning heading for Doncaster and I ALWAYS keep a weather eye open 'because I am an anorak!
07:30 at South Cave, dry but heavy stratocumulus bank to the SW heading NE. Eventually started raining at the Ouse Bridge for about 5 minutes, this would be about 7:45 it was dry to the east and heavy and overcast to the west. This ties in nicely with John Holmes' radar observations.
There were definately NO tornadoes/waterspouts over the Humber at this time, guaranteed. However, when I passed Thorne and headed for Donny there was a very pronounced line of stratocumulus passing N of Donny towards the Humber. At 08:00 this had a very ragged base with one very pronounced lowering. I watched this for a while but it was just that, a lowering: saturated air being pushed upwards into the clouds by the cold air descending with the rain. It was not rotating and lasted about 10 minutes, then it was gone.
The banks of stratocumulus around at the time were very reminiscent of those that can produce needle funnels (I have seen a number of these in this area over the last few years) and, looking at a band to the SE over Lincs as I crossed the Ouse Bridge they did extend to the Stratosphere as they were flat-topped and composed of Cbs, although when you are under them and the sky is cloudy you cannot tell this.
To cut a long story short, there were definately NO funnels over the Humber at the times quoted, however, it is possible that there might have been some needle funnels over the estuary afer 08:00 as this bank of cloud moved NEward. Unlikely but possible....

Ive heard 4 rumbles of thunder here in the last few minutes.It's still very dark but the rain has stopped.
Looks black down your way again now and plenty of sferics on AM (cricket :lol: ). Nothing here at the mo.

Needle funnel to the south (maybe over the Humber) at 13:05 today. Very small and short lived - less than a minute and I didn't have my camera.....again!
Just had another torrential downpour: would be surprised if we don't get thunder today.

Storm approached from the SW and missed us mainly to the NW. Nice gust front which passed over here at 19:00 bringing some much-needed rain. Lots of sferics on MW and thunder heard although no lightning seen. I guess maybe two strikes per minute.
Lasted about 20 minutes then moved NE out to sea.

Funnel cloud observed about 5 - 10 miles to the West at exactly 13:00 as I was travelling North on the M18 past Thorne. Pulled of the motorway at Goole but cloud was gone - lasted about 2 minutes. Probably N of Doncaster at the time.
First FC of 2009 for me: alas no pics as I was driving on the motorway :-(

On Ferriby Foreshore (about 2 miles upstream of Humber Bridge N bank) at 13:00 looking SSE. Heard thunder from storm to NW that was moving NE - distance about 5 miles or so.
Second storm approaching from SW at same time was peppering the Ancholme Valley (Lincs) with CGs - up to 4 per minute. Watched this for about half an hour as it moved across the estuary and over the Humber Bridge. Nearest lightning to location was about 1 second between CG and thunder.
Lovely vista to watch a storm - most surreal experience was, in the middle of the storm CGs everywhere, a man pulled-up in his white van and unloaded three crates of racing pigeons!

Todays lowest pressure was 992.3 mb, we had 5 thunderstorms in total (only 3 over-head) frequent CG, hail, heavy rain, gusty winds. And there still could be more rain, and not to mention tomorrow is looking like a repeat picture

check it out just to the west of us. Everything is rotating about a point between Hull and York and there is more heavy convection on the way!
Can hear rumbles few and far between at the mo but cannot pinpoint direction: dark clouds all around but no rain for a few hours now.
Will post a storm report in the appropriate thread later for the one I watched lunchtime: it was surreal!

It's been cloudy and raining on and off all morning here...truth be told I reckon those of us in the west of the UK have had it as far as the heat goes. That wont stop the media going on about "Britain" (meaning the South East of England) sizzling though eh? :winky:
I agree completely and us in the East have had foggy, overcast weather for the last fortnight on and off and it has been positively COLD most days!

Storm just passed here heading NE some pretty bad flooding at local shopping centre some cars flooded , hail Thunder and gusty winds, probably affecting north Doncaster now .
Actually knid of died just South of Donny and has rebuilt further NW so most of Donny only got a few rumbles and a few drops: hardly made the ground wet in the town centre.
Good shots opf the anvil appearing now though....

Looks like the guys have just turned North....finally. But it still looks as if they are behind the storm as I can see the blown out anvil and the the centre of the storm is still rain-wrapped.
They need to get ahead to be able to see what is happening under the base: spent too long watching the outflow methinks...
Not really too hopeful here for the next few days. Next Spring more like.....

Been snowing again, mainly lightly, for the last 15 minutes or so.
Slight thaw at the mo here but we have had about 4-5cm snow this evening so far. Looking at the radar there may be a little bit more to come.
