Altocumulus floccus I think. Instability in the mid levels of the atmosphere?

I was just walking the dog and noticed a massive thunderhead to the South. The other day I saw one in a similar direction with a similar size and when I checked on the radar it was off Hunstanton. Tonight's storm is in The Wash, a distance of 75 miles!
Not bad: didn't even think of storms as it just never looked on here today. A nice surprise - would have been better after dark though!....
-
I can see the anvil of the storm(?) off the N Norfolk coast and the one heading towards Whitby. Great visibility now...
-
Yep, there seems to be a big storm near Honfleur and smaller, satellite storms North of Carentan, at Caen and North of Le Havre. Deffo seems to be getting going again now big time.
-
Honfleur is getting hit: let's hope its beautiful wooden church survives this. It has for hundred's of years but other churches in France haven't been so lucky of late... Nice place Honfleur.
-
Definitely picking up again all around Le Havrte and even North of there just entering the Channel.....

@reef I was driving home into the storm and saw the lightning over the Wolds from the M62 near Howden. Missed the worst (best!) but watched it back-build to the SE then head out into the N Sea. I agree, better than any storm last year and I missed the arcus!

They should be mostly snow but won't lay once it warms up unless they're heavy enough.
Reef, we actually got about 3 inches overnight and I have been sledging this morning! Complete surprise and very welcome. The band that went through an hour or so ago just clipped us to the east but I reckon you had a good bit: I hope you did. Another approaching now with a few more behind....
The battle today is between the amount of cloud v the amount of sun we get plus how much comes out of each shower to top up what's on the ground. We'' know the winner by 16:00.

Fascinating storm: been following it for a couple of weeks and thought it was going to loop-da-loop again but this time it was not to be. Hints of Vince from 2005 too at the end...
-
Big shower developed suddenly and moved over us but no thunder from it: maybe it's too late in the day....
-
Kinda weird on radar, it just seems to have petered out just West of Hull bu developed on the S bank. I cannot count how many days I have heard thunder and looked South and it has been black then checked the radar and it has been Scunny way on....
-
Still rumbling here: started at 17:56 with about a flash every couple of minutes. Saw one bolt of lightning, which was IC. Nice to see even if now heading Reef's way. Most of the activity passed just to the south so heading for Hedon?

Its been astonishing, just 31 days haven't had an easterly component to the wind since mid-February. Never known anything like it.
If it wants to do that in winter then it can feel free, but funnily they always seem to be westerly then!
Yep, really, really weird this year with the easterlies. There was a period last spring too but never at the right time it seems and not as long as this one. This year we kinda missed all the good weather too due to the fret as the N Sea was still sooo cold with warm air coming across it. Even Doncaster was sunny but around here the fret and low cloud that develops from it were the order of the day.
Hopefully the change in direction we have just experienced, will mean a change in weather luck!
-
Yep! Not been great here this year so far: too many easterlies...

Eat crow time for me perhaps.... Lots of sferics on am and according the the radar, lots of storms approaching... Would have bet against this an hour ago. Just goes to show....

If there are going to be any storms today then I would expect them to most likely occur across NE England from NE Lincolnshire up towards the Scottish border through the afternoon hours (possibly as far west as the Pennines). There is the risk of the odd rumble anywhere north of say Birmingham but it is a low risk, for most it will just be bog standard heavy showers or rain. The north-east of England benefits from a bit more CAPE (around 300-500j/kg on GFS) and also some deep layer shear. This indicates to me that storms that do occur would likely become organised and this may help fuel them to produce more in the way of lightning, torrential rainfall, gusty winds and hail. Generally though lightning activity will be sparse, especially compared to what some saw during the last week of May. Also a risk of an isolated tornado as has been pointed out in the two convective forecasts above.
IMO where there will probably be some photogenic clouds it would not be worth me chasing today. Although if I was living somewhere in East Yorkshire I would have my camera ready.
I do and I haven't

No fog at the mo: first day this week without it! I suspect it will be rolling in from the N Sea again shortly now that the sun has set.....

@Gonzolio Martinez Come and live in East Yorkshire, always a feature when the wind is off the N Sea and the land is hot(ish..). It's called a 'fret' and acts line a dry line. It creeps inland from the coast in the evening and overnight (it's here now) and then, as the land warms-up, it evaporates back to the coast. Sometimes from the Wolds you can see the line across Holderness as a grey wall of cloud on hot days. It can make days on Bridlington Beach very cold when it arrives... Sounds like you had something similar this evening.

@viking_smb Yep, another cell has gone up East of Neath. You guys might do well soon
-
New cell gone up NE of Brynamman: no sferics yet but looks quite intense on radar.
-
@Evening thunder that might well be the Carmarthen cell, which is dissipating now... New cell going up near Camelford so there is hope in your part of the world.
-
Cell E of Carmarthen with a couple of sferics now...

Same here Reef: everything is saturated and there is a risk of flooding in the pump-drained Hull Valley I fear looking at the amount of surface water there is. Needs to ease off otherwise there will be problems.

Still flashing away to the north but, for a while, we had strobe lightning. Not seen that in nearly 30 years!
