  1. Argh. Quite heavy looking snow has formed over the Blackdowns but I'm in a gap, with moderate snow also not far to my SW for the last few hours (at one point the radar showed us under the edge but we weren't, wind probably blew it a couple miles away by the time it reached the ground lol). It's clearly topographically induced, but hope it doesn't stay like this all night... The earlier little bit of snow that didn't really settle here looked quite pretty on nearby hills, this a sheltered spot just above Exmouth.
  2. Some nice moderate snow for the last hour or so here Big flakes at times too, although it's not settling anywhere much except the moss blobs on the neighbour's roof lol. Just easing off now though. Temp dropped to 0.8C but now up to 1.2C. We had some flooding on the rivers around here Thursday morning with up to 40mm of rain in the Blackdown Hills, so with the snow/freezing rain on the 1st/2nd March there's been some weather this month. Using the lowest total from my snow cores on the 2nd, we've already had 120mm of precipitation here this month.
  3. Heavy rain for about 45 mins after midnight, now 4.6C and sunny (min 2.7C). Yesterday had showers and sun, min -1.4C, max 10.5C. Finally got around to sorting/resizing some pictures I took of the snow and freezing rain. 2nd to last pic is the only example of drifts like that I found, and the last pic shows branches down from the weight of ice combined with strong winds. Also I think I know why this anemometer (not mine) was under-reading!
  4. Actually dropped to -0.6C last night under clear calm spells, funny how they didn't happen during the cold spell lol
  5. My snow had virtually all gone by dawn this (now yesterday) morning Reached 9.7C in some in the afternoon. River quite high for 2 days now, and gradually rose today mostly due to snow melt upstream. Went about the place and up a nearby hill in the morning, was a fair cover in places up there still, seems places sheltered from the wind (woodland and the steep west side of the hill) had more snow left.. as well as drifts of course. Found one small lane with some 6 foot drifts. Some other locations with drifting of a couple foot though not widespread. Will hopefully find time to sort my pictures, amongst the other stuff I've got to do which has been pushed back lol.
  6. The weather seems pretty keen to melt my snow. We've been right in a sweet spot for rain during the night, light-moderate rain now with more to come. Reached 6.0C overnight though it's now fallen to 3.8C. In fact the river is quite high. Davis gauge has 22.6mm of melted snow and rain (some may have blown out). Manual shows 9.1mm of actual rain since I emptied it after 11pm last night. Still white in places though more green showing in some parts of the fields, up to a few inches of level on the lawn still. A couple big piles of icy snow near here should take a while to go.
  7. Haha, the street lights from across the fields are reflecting on the wet ice layer like they do when the river floods. Also funny how the heaviest radar echoes are making a beeline for me now that it's rain!
  8. Had rain for a while here, and the temp shot up to 4C just before midnight! So once again it gives a higher max on my stats than the actual daylight maximum. I went for a walk earlier, got lots of pics and afterwards did pop out in the car to higher ground a few miles away.. main road was surprisingly bad and seemed worse than earlier (though I did not have any trouble), some pretty impressive freezing rain scenes there, I had to go and see it considering how rare that is. I'll look at posting some pictures tomorrow.
  9. Lol, had barely perceptable frozen drizzle pellets earlier, then a few snowflakes.. recently it just started doing a wet drizzle which is now turning to snow! Glad to see it's still sleet/snow down in Salcombe. Temp -0.3C.
  10. Turned to ice pellets here now. Looking at the radar, it's probably going to end just before it would otherwise turn to snow lol
  11. A few pics of the freezing rain here, these actually from about an hour ago now. Light freezing rain continuing (with a few ice pellets too) since then. Can't help but imagine if it as all snow (still impressive though!), some strong wind gusts and bushes making a strange icy sound (think my anemometer is under-reading due to the ice). I'd better get out and make the most of it, heavy rain forecast tonight and tomorrow (temp +4 and +5c)
  12. Still freezing rain here (and the odd ice pellet lol), looks like it has been much of the night. 'only' -0.4C so not sure if it's freezing as instantly as if it was colder, but it still seems to have covered most things with ice! Radar suggests more to come, Will it turn to snow? Either that, or especially on hills where it's colder, and windier, I reckon thee could be some tree damage from the weight of the ice.
  13. Light freezing drizzle now after light freezing rain+ice pellets for a while. Wind getting up, but it's stopped any drifting. Precip still keeps weakening approaching here (heavy stuff NE and SW of me). Not sure what to think, if snow guess I'd be annoyed. Surely those intense echoes are not all snow in Somerset.. Also if it's still snow down in Asburton these things are kind of annoying. The worst seems to be a bit east of the red warning based on radar now and radar accumulations. It's been a good event, but a bit of a unsavoury taste to finish. after a good day it was forecast to be heaviest this evening, with an increasing wind giving blizzard like conditions and drifting. Met Office forecast just updated to continue the 'heavy snow' symbols until 3am and also at 5am! Also, it's still more than a degree warmer than forecast at -0.9C now still so maybe their -1C will become just above freezing? BBC report said there was freezing rain in Tiverton. I think freezing rain or ice pellets could affect most of the region.. looking at the 850's and freezing level on the models.
  14. Kind of dissapinted, was hoping it could be snow until at least late evening to increase depths further (also didn't have it as heavy as the snow recently across Somerset) I guess I shouldn't complain though! Radar echoes coming towards me are parting like the red sea atm though. However, radar echoes 'weakening' may be good news for some, as it could mean it's transitioning back to snow as it pushes towards them (I believe ice pellets/freezing rain/melting snow etc reflect more strongly than powdery snow).
  15. Moderate intensity ice pellets now with a few snowflakes mixed in. Wind picking up a bit. Kind of hoping it doesn't turn to freezing rain before it gets stronger later this evening so the snow it can drift around more.
  16. I Can't think it can avoid turning to freezing rain here.. not if the Euro4's 850's of +3C here on the coast by midnight, and not back below zero till midday tomorrow are correct :/ ECM gets to 2-3C towards parts of the south coast, and above freezing for most of the region (going back below about 9am) Met Office symbols have snow throughout for me though.. can it compute freezing rain? But then it did show sleet at 0C a couple days ago so maybe. They show temps not getting above -1C tonight although they also said it should be -4C recently but it's actually -2.4C. A heavy area just missed and now it's gone very light (would have been nice to get some proper heavy snow before it turns lol) Heavy stuff approaching quick, so will see what it is before too long. Maybe it could be ice pellets, a traditional cross section in the US is snow -> Ice pellets -> Freezing rain -> rain (ice pellets when the cold surface layer is still deep enough). Anyway, the freezing rain will be more 'freezing' at higher elevations tonight, as up to at least 950hpa it looks like a normal temp profile (So colder the higher you get).
  17. Great day here. Persistent snow since lunch, varying around moderate. I'll have to process/upload some pics. An occasional gust blows the snow of the roofs etc but otherwise winds have been surprisingly light this afternoon (We are somewhat sheltered from the NE) Still enough to cause some variation in depth but a relatively level open and untouched gateway entrance suggests 12-13cm now. More in parts of the garden etc with some from the roof etc adding to it. I was wondering earlier if the heavier echoes in the channel marked the transition to (what over land will be freezing) rain.. as dry powder snow doesn't seem to reflect that strongly (large or wet flakes may though?).. though it doesn't look like such a defined edge now so maybe not. However reports from Dorset suggest maybe it is. Still snow here, though the flakes don't feel quite as dry/powdery. A heavy echo has missed here slightly so can't really test that. Also what's the intense localised lines on radar around NW Dartmoor (and now west Dorset) Could it really tie in with the local high 850's on some models due to topography affecting things above?
  18. it's started Moderate snow now and 0.5-1cm down already. Lovely light powdery snow blowing about in the wind at times too even though it's not too windy here being relatively sheltered from the NE. Going to really drift with blizzard like conditions in exposed locations later! It does look like it's going to ease off any minute here, but still it's a nice start. -4.6C with a DP of -7.2C.. I'm worried about it being a bit marginal
  19. Temp here is -5.2C with quite a strong wind. Impressive. A weather station at 280m on the Blackdown Hills is -7.3C with a wind chill of -17.2C! Haytor Vale (310m) -7.7c, Liscombe on Exmoor is -8C. Probably -10C on the very top of Dartmoor, as per Met Office forecast which has a feels like of -24C later tonight!
  20. Well, no more snow here apart from the brief shower last night (apart from a dandruff flurries). Had some light stuff pass slightly north of me earlier. However, models and forecasts seem to have upgraded precip for me tomorrow, many show 10-20cm.. With the wind.. blizzard like conditions with exposure especially in the evening.. could be the event we've been waiting for, I'm almost going into ramp mode! Also just a thought, I wonder if the possible freezing rain tomorrow night could be ice pellets for some if the cold layer is deep enough... I'm not knowledgeable enough or do I have the right charts.. but I've done a brief search that suggests it might be possible if the warm layer is only around 850hpa and above.. the temp only rises to -5C on the forecast for Yes Tor at this time (620m high). Either way, looks interesting!
  21. I saw Headcorn Aerodrome in Kent was reporting -15C this morning, not sure what the exact lowest was or whether it's an official site
  22. I wonder where the local SW forecasts use for the temperature shown on the outlook summary, the Sicily Isles? A couple days ago they had Thursday being +4C , yesterday it showed +3C, and is down to +2C now. On the Met Office it's forecast to stay below freezing here all day, and not get above -3C until 5pm! Even Penzance is forecast to be freezing during the day.
  23. Crazy conditions on the top of Dartmoor tomorrow! This is for Yes Tor. Feels like -22C, and then gusting to 74 mph in the evening
  24. Breeze never dropped but it still got to -5.3C, which is quite impressive without an inversion and I'm not sure I remember getting that low in this situation. Although last year had -5.5C on a calm night and many years get -5C, also mins are not a patch on December 2010 (-14.0C). South coast towns around here down to -4/-5C and they can struggle to get below freezing in winter.
