  1. When the Met Office issued red warnings at 4am on the morning of the event
  2. Indeed, think we will be resurrecting the drought thread before long. Just 0.4mm of rain here so far this month.
  3. Agreed, done with winter now. The last couple of days have flipped me fully into spring mode.
  4. Love driving to work in daylight! So glad we're not on BST all year round.
  5. I do worry we're on course for severe water issues this summer.
  6. By the end of Feb, the sun is more than double the elevation in the sky as it is at Christmas. Really start to notice the warmth in the sun as Feb progresses.
  7. I agree, there has definitely been a marked shift in our weather. We don't seem to have regular rainfall any more, it's either flood or drought!
  8. Got incredibly lucky here in December with the snow making it further north and west than perhaps anticipated, but it felt like a waste of a cold spell. Proper, deep cold with the days at their shortest but such little snow chances considering the cold was in place for more than a week. Feeling lovely by day in the sunshine, I'm switching into spring mode now. Bring on the first mid-teen days.
  9. Another beautiful day here, max temp of 8C. I agree too about the frosts this winter, not been many winters in recent times this frosty.
  10. I don't mind the concept of naming storms, but the way it's been done has been a mess. There is no consistency with what constitutes a named storm, and other Met agencies often name them before our Met Office meaning that the alphabetical order gets completely lost. They also tend to get named far too late, so that they don't raise awareness or enable people to prepare anyway!
  11. I'll be back in action this year, flying out 20th May with my partner, my Dad and his other half for 10 days of chasing and then a road trip to Vegas. Can't wait.
  12. What a beautiful day. Hard to imagine that a severe cold spell is starting at 6pm this evening(!)
  13. One of the most bizarre warnings/alerts I've ever seen. It's average February weather and will feel pleasant in the sunshine by day! Got the radio on at work and all this has done is fuelled a tabloid style frenzy for supposed "severe" cold. I find it odd how every region of England is deemed to have a 60% chance of meeting the thresholds, no difference between SW and N England. Their thresholds don't even seem to be met either, it's meant to be a mean temperature of 2C or below for more than 48 hours. I'm pretty sure the daytime maxima will prevent that threshold being met. We'll be having heat alerts for 20C in July next. What a soft nation we are.
  14. Yep, warmest year on record pretty much nailed on, and it could be by some distance too.
  15. It may seem absurd that we still have drought restrictions, but groundwater is still low in the southeast. Ponds and lakes here are still well below normal levels. It will take several months for groundwater and aquifers to recover.
  16. The patterns we're seeing in recent years are definitely concerning, not just this year. It's another period where we've switched from drought conditions to immediate flooding rains. There never seems to be a happy medium any more.
  17. Well, we've certainly had drought-relieving rains in recent weeks. We've exceeded 100mm for November already which is seriously impressive for these parts. Ponds and lakes are still very low here though which shows just how depleted the water table has been this year.
  18. This is exactly it. Doing roads forecasting means we have to monitor roads temperatures extensively through the winter months. Surface temperatures can keep dropping for up to an hour after the sun rises, particularly in areas of shade. Can catch local authorities out at times.
  19. The hope of an elusive frost on Friday night looks to be increasingly faint. EC now has it overcast and mild for most.
  20. Gave in last night. This horrible mild, damp mush is leading to damp issues in the house. Would love a crisp cold spell.
  21. 21.2C was the max at Porthmadog in the end. Latest the UK has ever reached 70F.
  22. Purely anecdotal but it does feel as though Autumn in general has warmed up more than any other season. September is an extension of summer and then it's only a very gradual cool down into an Autumnal feeling December.
  23. Date record is going to be smashed today. Already soaring past 20C in NW Wales and the date record is 19.2C.
