  1. Depends...if it dumps over 8 inches, then it's the best.... Anything less, and I have to try and drive a sledge on metal rails that weighs anything between 157 tons and 475 tons....and that wasn't fun today But yes.....the snow loving child in me hopes we get absolutely ruined by what's coming....
  2. Home after chaos on the rails again.....train failures and points problems aplenty today. If the HIRLAM grabs are correct, the worst is yet to come....you'd think that some warnings would be extended already though, given that it already visible in the Channel....
  3. I'm not a forecaster (beyond radar watching and saying "it's going to snow!", but NW short range model is showing the Thursday/Friday event heading more towards Ireland? Hope I've just misread it, but that's a hell of a change compared to the current amber/yellow warnings for most of southern England....
  4. Am I the only one patiently waiting and hoping the Met Office extend that Amber zone for Thursday/Friday towards us slightly with each day that passes? Moderate, unexpected snow here again and looks like convection coming almost due west along the south Essex coast....bonus round! And as for melt....it's -4 here at the moment....as long as we can keep that pesky sun above cloud, we should be ok... On a work note....as predicted, the wheels fell off the rail service. We're still trying to provide a full service, but train failures, point failures and reduced running speeds have all had a distinct impact today and looks like it won't get any better...i'm working from 1415, so I can join in the fun
  5. What's vaguely amusing is that Network Rail put us on an emergency timetable yesterday...annoyed a lot of people when the snow didn't arrive, and haven't said a word about tonight. If this is as meaty as it looks, it could be a proper farce tomorrow as we attempt to deliver a full service, but can't.....especially as it looks like it'll dump over the entire line from Shoebury to Fenchurch St
  6. Just got in from C2C driving....was very, very gently snowing as I brought my empty train back from Pitsea at 2345. One hell of an orange glow over the estuary.....I know why now! Bring it on
  7. Slightly disappointed Romford resident popping my head in (Never been more annoyed that my ancestral home of Biggin once again got pancaked whilst I have nada :D) Given the current amber warning for Thursday and Friday, is there scope for it to be extended eastwards before Thursday? And am I correct that it'll be a form of battleground snow....frontal in nature rather than hit and miss streamers? (Not being dismissive of the folk who sat under one for ages, but slightly galling as you watch it pass you by....:p) Thanks all, and hope you're enjoying the scenes!
  8. Bit more optimistic about Thursday and Friday with the latest amber warnings....would expect to see a little eastwards migration of the zone, hopefully. And that will be frontal snow, if i'm correct? A lot less hit and miss than streamers, at any rate
  9. Thinking of changing my username to 'Disappointed of Romford'....got robbed of any favourable easterly component overnight, and unless i'm mistaken, we just got the easterly bit just as the convection dries up until sun-down. Still hoping for something nice here....just had a 5 minute heavy shower, but nothing upstream. And with the sun beaming through, it vanished in 5 minutes too.... But positive thinking! Tonight is another night, and Friday still looks to have potential, even if the bulk appears to be heading more Southern/South Western UK.
  10. Just popped out for a cig.....don't know if it's just me, but the air almost has a smell/flavour to it. Either that or it's just pure Siberian air instead of the polluted crap i'm used to
  11. It's all gone pretty quiet now.....feel like the poor relatives shuffled to the back of the photo.
  12. Any chance of scaling back the back-biting comments? IMBY-ism in the MAD thread is par for the course, but in here..... As I said last night, let's just enjoy the potential for many (probably not all, but surprises do happen...) to have a decent snowfall for the first time in years!
  13. I'm not betting on my chances of even getting to East Ham Tuesday evening....the trains will probably be screwed, ditto the roads and public transport, and i'm a 5 series owner ? It's not looking good......
  14. Absolutely astonishing....has someone carried back some virus from the MAD thread? Within the next 3 days, we have the highly likely potential of seeing more snow over a pretty widespread area. Possibly the most some members have seen in years. Why the hell are people doom-mongering about the end of the week....which is still not nailed on in terms of a mild breakdown! How about we keep an eye on it, but not lose focus on what we have on our own damn doorstep, temporally speaking?
  15. I can think of a few colleagues that deserve a couple too. It all depends on the situation at the time.....the railway is very much damned if you do and damned if you don't. I can guarantee some people will complain like hell if nothing runs at all....but the weather is the weather. If it truly honks it down, then trains can't be run safely. No safety = no running.
  16. I'd keep a close eye on the website....we'll do our best to run, but realistically there will be quite a few cancelled services....perhaps some shuttles if only part of the route is blocked. But the rules are there for a reason.....and I don't fancy being at the front of a (at minimum) 157 ton train at 65mph if it all goes bent. Doubt the people behind would be too thrilled either.......
  17. As a driver, you have to know the rule book inside out.....they're curiously specific about depths for standing water and snow. 8 inches of snow...anything more and the job stops. Even with less than 8 inches, journey times are increased as you have to do frequent maximum braking tests to keep the brake rigging from freezing up. So...it all depends on how good our stellar Network Rail guys are at keeping the lines clear really...and that goes countrywide, not just South Essex.
  18. This was for South Essex....Shoeburyness -> Southend -> Upminster -> Fenchurch St. I assume it's certain locations only.....can't imagine 30cm+ in London But I have no info regarding Great Yarmouth i'm afraid......I know our contingency plan is an emergency timetable where we try to run a basic service, but I think we might struggle if that amounts comes true.....
  19. I'll throw this into the hat..... Just been informed by my depot that Network Rail predicting 30cm+ for our (C2C) areas of operation....looks like my late shifts next week could be.....interesting
  20. I would, but I'm train driving tomorrow morning. They take a dim view of hammering around South Essex whilst Brahms and Liszt or even hungover, for good reason.
  21. As an aside, is everyone practising reverse psychology with this upcoming feast of epic proportions? Seems very quiet on here....people staying away in case they jinx it?
  22. Damned if you do or don't with regards to depth forecasts this early, but it's still a good indicator. I'm in Ashford overnight Monday...could be interesting. Hoping for 1 (or both....not greedy at all :p) situation or another: I can still make it back to Romford for work at 1600 on Tuesday, or that enough snow falls (8 inches, to be precise about it...) between Fenchurch St and Shoeburyness so that the job stops. It's fun enough driving a commuter train in icy rail territory without adding copious amounts of snow into the mix......
  23. Can't quite believe the weather today....it was 6 degrees earlier when I parked at the ex-outlaws in Brentwood to see my little girl. After a ridiculous amount of hail 'balls', I go out to my car 30 mins ago and found all the puddled water frozen solid on it....it was like something out of The Day after Tomorrow. ?
