  1. Pretty strong gusts here in Romford...never seen lamp-post heads bouncing up and down by at least a foot. Got mildly fed up with having to chase the small poly greenhouse around the garden, so that's now weighted down with pretty much anything I could find. Get the funny feeling that we're in a lull at the moment. With the low not having moved that much or apparently even starting to fill, I think that we'll be getting stronger stuff on the way soon. As an aside, when I was a mere boy of 5, I managed to sleep through the 87 storm when we lived in Biggin Hill. Woke up the next morning to find a 60+ft silver birch from our garden over on it's side, sharing about 4 other gardens. No fear at all back then. Amazing how age changes you. Personally, I love extreme weather but now i'm a dad to a lovely 7 month old girl, i'm finding it increasingly worrying the stronger the wind gets. Should never feel the floor under your feet rumble with gusts of wind Stay safe everyone!
  2. I think I might be going stir-crazy with the lack of white stuff this winter....just saw my first gritter this season and jumped onto the radar to see...nothing. Not a shower in sight, and the roads have dried up nicely in the moderate breeze. Must be trying to get at least some of their over-abundant salt stockpile out the door.
  3. The answer has already been touched upon, but the design of the Barrier is quite elegant. Most people think that it is purely to stop all the bankers getting soggy feet if a storm surge occurs.Whilst this is true, it can also turn the Thames upstream from the Barrier into a floodwater reservoir by closing the gates at low tide. This means that the upstream tidal Thames has a fair amount of storage for floodwater from the Thames Valley. This can then be released when the tide peaks and the levels are near equal on both sides of the gates. As the tide goes out, so does the stored floodwater. If not for the Barrier, ANY high tide ( not just surges) would mean the floodwater being unable to drain into the tidal section of the Thames.I've seen some comments (not on Netweather) saying that the Barrier is useless and not protecting anything . If it wasn't operating right now, we'd be seeing a whole lot more flooding.
  4. May be a wall of water down here, but i'm trying not to look at the Extra radar for Scotland at the mo.... Never have seen the darker red shades for snowfall, but they look like they're getting pasted.
  5. Lol...it's heartening to see the first signs of NIMBYism showing on the forum (whichever wind direction favors the particular poster MUST be the one everybody needs...). Discounting model output, it's a sure sign of something approaching. On a more on topic note, it's been evident from recent output that anything and everything has been forecast at some point or another. The most important nontechnical thing I can see is that the time frame is slowly getting shorter and the 'tipping point' has been approaching at about the same rate (barring a few wobbles with a potential easterly). I would be more worried if the same tantalising synoptics were showing at T+168 and remaining there with each successive day of output.
  6. Well, not wishing to tempt fate but things seem to have calmed here and are staying that way. Off to bed now and not looking forward to cleaning up the garden tomorrow and having a look at what's missing from the chimney. Night all, and stay safe
  7. Well, maybe not dry....expect there's still a few damp bits of carpet in the cabin and possibly the cockpit, but at least they're down
  8. To be fair, if you were stuck outside in this, I think you'd be shouting and screaming! I know I would be.
  9. Back from Tesco! Looks like everyone had the same idea as me...never seen it busy at 0130! Strange feeling outside at the mo....feels like Doomsday or something equally silly. In exposed areas, the gusts are enough to make walking difficult and Tescos' covered walkway is...well..not covered anymore... Don't usually mind driving in bad conditions, but when even a fairly low profile, sleek hatchback is getting kicked sideways by gusts of wind, it's time to call it a day. See that EZY made it to Ostend...fairly expedited landing by the looks of it. No wonder with the fuel he burnt up over the south coast. EDIT: cancel that...Schiphol and just got down safely.
  10. Nope, he's still there...just climbing now, so probably gave up on Gatwick in the end.... Quite where he's planning to go is another question. Anyway, off to 24 hour Tesco for nibbles and experience the weather. Back soon!
  11. Not when you watch live....he made one approach, then went around....rubber has not hit the ground since Tel Aviv.
  12. Just saw that...without comms, i'm not sure. Unless Gatwick is temp closed and they are hoping for an attempt soon. They have an alternate for a reason, and should be heading for it.
  13. and I think word might have got out...EZY79VU bypassing Gatwick completely to the alternate. Times like this I wish I still had my transceiver...bet there's some wry and extremely dry comments flying this evening.
  14. Lol...and it never ends. BAW166 http://www.flightradar24.com/BAW166 One attempt and one was enough it seems....now howling northbound with the tailwind from hell...was showing 300kts a few mins ago. Probably just waiting for P1 to come back from the lav with a fresh set of kecks before heading for their alternate...
  15. Also having a little chuckle at EGKK (Gatwick)....take a peak at the three aircraft shown. LEADER3, LEADER6 and OPS2....must be ground vehicles for sure, but showing up on radar? Seems odd to even have them show a return on ground movement radar...
  16. Well, Romford area is kicking and screaming. Watching the trees buckle at the back of my house, and gauging how high they are in relation to the distance from the flat.... In other news, my mini greenhouse took off over a fence and landed in a neighbours garden. Currently back where it belongs, weighted down with a few metal fold up chairs. Nasty clattering noise from the sealed fireplace as well earlier. Hopefully just a chimney pot and nothing more structural. Also, to add to all of the plane-watchers (currently training PPL here and flown since age 8 ), I would dearly love to see the track vs actual heading on these approaches....must be some wild crab angles. If I could be bothered, I could probably work it out. But i'm more interested in listening for nasty sounds in the loft. Keep safe all
  17. Could be very wrong, but I swear i'm seeing some wet snow mixed in with the rain here in Gidea Park. Certainly feels cold enough out there.
  18. Outside having a ciggie in Gidea Park, Romford. Couple of fairly good strikes over toward London lighting up the sky nicely. Too far away to be useful here, but the moon is lighting up some really dense small cloud clusters. Who knows...something may be in the works, but I think tomorrow will be the sweet spot for our neck of the woods.
  19. Interesting reading on Yahoo News (nearly had to wash my mouth out then...)... http://uk.news.yahoo.com/big-freeze-bites-power-supply-065130667.html#1fh8gXI Specifically, "Paul Mott, a forecaster with MeteoGroup, the weather division of the Press Association, said that while most areas will have a lot of drier weather throughout the rest of the week, the cold will be here for the foreseeable future. "Where there is a lot of snow lying on the ground we should see a slow thaw by the end of the week, with temperatures creeping up to 4C or 5C (39F or 41F) during the days by about Friday," Mr Mott said." Although my weather knowledge is restricted to looking at pretty charts, trying to work them out and then going with instinct instead, the above appears to be a pretty bold claim considering the charts we've been seeing.
  20. Very light snow in Romford as I walked the other half to the train station...quite big flakes too, and one hell of a biting wind.
  21. Well, just been out down to the station and back to drop the other half off for work. Managed about 2 inches on garden furniture, less on surfaces. The depths on the street are quite strange....just a dusting in some places, then you hit lumpy, bumpy bits up to about 2-3 inches. Still that god awful dripping from trees and drainpipes (as for the whole of the night). Just hoping that the wind is favorable to bring some of that North Sea goodness our way later on
  22. Hmmm....not sure whether to be happy or suspicious.... Lovely snowfall, settled on everything in Gidea Park....BUT.... Having just been out in it, the trees and drainpipes are dripping... Happy to have near-blizzard conditions (please note the NEAR...for the Blizzard Officials of Regional Expertise....), but get the feeling that it's come too late to deliver something truely wonderful.
  23. Fun road trip....Biggin Hill (Kent/London border) to Surrey Quays, London and then onto Romford....Biggin had laying snow on the roads at 1745, whilst Leaves Green had nothing 5 mins further on. Settling snow increasing noticable along the A12 (along with some HUGE puddles and aquaplaning type goodness) and finally Romford, where it's settled on all side roads and the road centres....hopefully more to come
  24. Little bits of snow grain starting in Gidea Park, RM2 as I speak...radar looks to be 'interesting' for the next hour or two
  25. Good grief! Been lurking for some time and finally remembered my login to start adding a *huge* number of people to the ignore list.... The simple facts as they remain are that we're getting within a critically short timeframe for any massive changes to be made. There are two simple options (as many more, um, realistic, peeps have pointed out already): 1: Every single major model (and a couple of minor players) have got the synoptics nailed on, and the next few days will pan out as planned 2: Every single major model has that has agreed consistency for some time has got the whole situation wrong and the GFS is correct. I wouldn't (and won't, at 0435) work out the odds against the GFS in this siutation. And many much more knowledgable people than me have highlighted the reasons why GFS may be having a difficult time with this situation. Constantly reading one liners and the classic 'winter is over' or 'write of the rest of 'x' month' posts grates on the nerves, and i'm not sure if the ignore list will take the strain..... How about we settle down, keep observing the outputs and then deal with what we get given. For my money, and to err on the side of caution, I believe we will end up with a *very* slightly modified ECM setup towards less cold conditions. It'll still be damn cold, and plenty of white stuff, but i'm not going to scream and throw the toys out of the pram over one model refusing to play ball...it can go and sit in the sin bin for all I care. And on for the MODS: next winter, can we have the unusual option of not 'ignoring' people, but perhaps a 'follow' button....those people that post copious amounts of drivel within a short timeframe will then drop off the radar and leave much more informative, useful posts. /rantover Edited because I forgot to put which modified setup...d'oh
