  5. It's magnificent posts like the above of yours SM that prevent me from doing my job and pulling my brain cells away into the interesting part of my crust like a super magnet? and to think how we stated our sorrow at missing 70's - 80's classic setups like the one we are grasping now only the other week? (Yearly allowance off topic post hereby used)
  6. WIB's hideaway so here he his then?, skiving off to Spain and the Med with the jet
  7. This will no doubt have been a reporter from the 'Sheffield Star', I take "VIZ" magazine views more seriously Pit, our local paper ramps with delirious scare-mongering madness the moment the temp drops below 40'F as this weeks headlines of "severe Blizzards" and banality the likes of "Arctic fever grips region" is enough to make me condemn the paper as pure waffle to anyone who buys it. The cold spell has been a classic toppler with one night reaching a lowest of -1.6C and not enough snowfall to even detect visible looking out my windows, So i`ll give it 2 out of 10 for me, both in anticipation (as i did not get overly drawn beforehand) and overall after the post mortem. (whistlin Dixie for the Northern + eastern Heights)
  8. Flat 5'C = A 'toppler' of a month before the raging Pre-easter --- erm,,,easterlies!
  9. 36'F, steady sleet, 1003mb holding, 65% humidity.

  14. I cant recall BBC local radio broadcasting weather and travel info only John, but i am trying desperately to find info on wether this was the same winter that south yorkshire council gritters went on strike  But if it was 78-79 then the unforgettable urban empty miles of white roads with abandoned vehciles at midday wont be repeated for a long long time, if sadly at all? Some of our 60`s and before born generation are like Animals in africe waiting for the rains, we listen, wait and watch quietly every winter, and maybe,,,, just maybe, the winter of 78-79 (not to mention 63 and 47) will return one year.
  15. Got to echo your statement their TEITS, I remember going out that 78-79 winter as 10 year old nipper at daybreak and not coming home until after dark with nothing but an "Icky bag" (thick plastic ICI bag) for slides, of course those days a kid could play out all day even on his own without risk to the evils that todays sick society brings :o
  16. If i become susceptible to the annual 'Bet-ramp' fever around the 20th DEC again then i`ll end up here:

  18. all this talk is not good for staying away from the seasonal wad on a white crimbo somewhere! Would the CFS provide insurance on that chart Paul? as last year i got hammered from the dusting over Norfolk petering out before reaching the beeb TV roof :o
  19. Cheers P! I`m sure we`ll all be interested when/if an explanation arises soon? Is their any instances of methane hydrate escaping in those parts? or am i going down the wrong road?
  20. right, i`ll try again with mr cock-up away at coventry this time!, Please try to post some info regarding 3 points i list below gents? (i) If our unwelcomed guest is the result of (most likely?) warming Arctic sea temps, then i`d be delighted if someone could provide a brief simple cause of this? as winds being the factor of dispersing ice is far from the truth in my basic opinion? (ii) I am also hugely concerned with P3`s posted NSIDC link offering that SEP sea ice would be zero by 2060! and 3, if the cryosphere chart seems to offer little increase from the 5.5 Km2 total sea ice area from mid-AUG 06 then something unusual is afoot? and sorry if this NASA link http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/Newsroom/...p3?img_id=17407 with a little more info regarding the Polynya has been posted previously? and sincere thank you`s for any replies/clarification on, again, my NW fave topic
