  1. Is that officially Bacup's first snow of year then Shadowfax. If so it's been along time coming but hopefully it's the first of many falls this winter. Raining where I am but a lot lower ASL
  2. Some quite heavy showers here overnight and still going on now. A bit of sleetyness within them but not amounting to anything and with a current temperature of 2.8c I can't see that changing. Things lare possibly looking a little more hopeful for later today and on Thursday but I still feel that the coming days are going to be more wet than white, certainly this side of the Pennines.
  3. temperatures definately on the rise here. It was 0.1C when I came in at 5.40pm but is now at 0.6C. Personally I can't see much of a snow event for this side of the Pennines tonight although if it all ends as wet slush I'd sooner miss out in it. Hopefully better chances will arrive later in the week but ATM and certainly for the North West it seems like a constant, close but no cigar situation.
  4. Quite an obvious bank of cloud to our SW now which ties in the the shower activity showing on the radar. How far away the cloud is though is difficult to judge due to high moorland partially blocking our view in that direction. Some lovely colouring in that cloud, the type of oranges and steel greys that only seem to show when the conditions are very cold. Temperatures have started to respond now, probably due to the cloud and have now climbed to -3.8c but all in all, a lovely winters morning.
  5. A bit of patchy cloud coming over now. If its armed with seasonal gifts of snow then bring it on otherwise please go away a don't spoil the low temperatures we currently have.
  6. Yes the satelite is showing a narrow line of showers heading across the Merseyside Area towards Cheshire. Much to far south for me but interesting for those in that neck of the woods. There is a fair clump of precipitaion now showing across ROI which looks to be heading our way; would that be the first signs of the front for overnight tonight or enhanced shower activity ahead of it.
  7. Looks like it has bottomed out at -5c here....not bad because at 2.30am it was only -3 It's a beautiful morning with all surfaces white, something which hopefully will be repeated tomorrow morning although with it being snow rather than frost.
  8. Yes I was out earlier and the roads, certainly side roads are quite icy from all of the recent rain. I'm surprised that they are filling the gritters as every time I pass one they never seem to be spreading salt just flashing lights to give the impression.
  9. Bit of a difference between the warnings out. NW are giving the chances of snow across the width of Northern England but Met O. place the emphasis more towards the east and north east. Who will end up closer to the correct outcome; onlt time will tell but in both cases I think altitude will play a major role. Drop in temperature has slowed down here...........now at -1.3c
  10. This time last night i'd have agreed BT but after the overnight non event I 'm not so sure. That said though, the temperatures are certainly playing their part as it now -0.3 and currently dropping at a rate of about 1c every 20 minutes Should be the coldest night of the period tonight.
  11. looking at the radar, the precipitation should be knocking on my door any minute now. what will it be is anyones guess but it's currently at -1c so wet or white its going to be slippy.
  12. no it must be dandruff always thought Tesco's own brand wasn't a patch on Head and Shoulders seriously I hope it is snowing because we are 30 miles further inland and 900 feet asl higher than Preston
  13. went to Bury from home earlier this evening and left a clear starry night for thick fog came home and left thick fog for a clear starry night again its amazing what a couple of hundred feet of altitude can do when it comes to fog we had some early this morning but since about 9am it's been clear.
  14. Altitude will obviously help places like Holme Moss, Snake Pass, Cat and Fiddle etc but I just can't see there being enough precipitation from this front to give more than a light covering at any altitude this far south. One of the weather sites (can't remember the name of it has a warning for up to 8 inches of snow across central and eastern areas and over high ground in general but I think it would need some amazing turnaround to get at that sort of figure.
  15. Diane Oxberry is a mild ramper; she won't talk about snow unless it's actually falling from the sky and going to be disruptive and even then It's a word she struggles with. TBH though, I can't see there being much in the way of snow across the NW region overnight. Possibly a covering over the tops but nothing much to speak of so on this occasion maybe she's right but there again she probably mad as hell because she can't say "at least it will be mild"
  16. If i'm not mistaken the frontal fall on the 4th gave us about 6 inches of wet snow which was quite a suprise when I went outside to work that morning. I believe areas further north than ourselves towards the Yorkshire Dales got even more. TWS was this not followed by a threat of a fall of biblical proportions with severe warnings out but then it went the way of the pear right at the last moment.
  17. We've just dipped below freezing now after a high of 3.5c late morning. I can't really see it dropping much lower as the cloud comes in but if that means snow then I'll take it before frost anytime.
  18. OMG - with those depths they are either a million miles off the mark or other organisations such as Met O are going to be rushing out Red warnings in the near future. TBH I think my fiver will be on option 1.
  19. Don't know but the spoiler probably ends with Stream and starts with either Gulf or Jet
  20. TBH I think it looks to be an interesting week coming up. Unsettled Atlantic spell with coolish uppers could give some surprises to the region in the coming days. I think that the Pennines, Lakes, NY Moors etc will always be favourite for settling snow but I wouldn't rule out some at lower levels, esspecially if a NW airflow pushes showers into Merseyside and through the Cheshire gap. I don't think for one minute we are talking disruptive snow but it could start to look just a little festive as we start December and one bonus is that Diane Oxberry won't be saying "at least it will be mild" much in the coming days. Anyway welcome to Net Weather SouthPennine88
  21. As i said earlier, this mornings fog was quite unusual up here. We get plenty of crap weather but not much fog.
  22. After a sunny morning it has clouded over a lot now and even though the temperature is showing 3.4c it feels pretty damn cold. Areas out of what direct sunlight we have had are still white with frost.
  23. I think this evening and tomorrow morning are going to a case of wait and see for anyone within the snow forecast regions. Highland Scotland will probably get a decent fall from it but further south and on lower ground I think it will be marginal at best and in that I include my decent altitude. As was previously mentioned, lamp post watchers may be out in force tonight although I expect it will be more like early morning rather than during the night when it reaches the more southerly parts of the region. lets hope it upgrades to a better than expected fall and more widespread as a snowy opening to December would be nice to see again.
  24. Fog has cleared now and the sun is breaking out and it's turning into a lovely day although still cold. It would be a fanstastic walking day but, although I'm on a days holiday, other commitments rule that out. Never mind, with a bit of look a good day in the hills in the company of snow may be possible this weekend.
  25. Unusually for us, we've got fog and it's made everything white. It's not particularty dense but as we're much too high ASL for lowland fog but below the default 1300ft level of hill fog it is quite an unusal thing to wake up to and probably only occurs a handful of times a year.
