  1. I noticed the BBC predicted 4c max for Glasgow today. Cant see that with the cold start there's been.
  2. The colder air does seem to be digging in quite quickly behind the main band of precipitation with temperatures dropping about 4c in the last 3 hours in Kirkwall. For central and southern areas I'd say they may benefit from some cold temperatures and dewpoints this morning - still around freezing with dewpoints around -2c across most of the central belt.
  3. I see that Met Office have extended their warning on Sunday and now covers these areas that I dont think were previously covered. Strathclyde: Argyll + Bute E Ayrshire E Dunbartonshire E Renfrewshire Glasgow Inverclyde N Ayrshire N Lanarkshire Renfrewshire S Ayrshire S Lanarkshire W Dunbartonshire There is a moderate risk of severe weather affecting parts of north and western Scotland, areas of Northern Ireland, parts of the West Midlands, northwest England and northern Wales on Sunday. Heavy snow showers may give accumulations of 2-5cm and there is a risk of 10 to 15cm over hills.
  4. I saw that as well on the Met Office fax but hopefully it will just be a brief mild sector around lunchtime and if it does start as rain it will turn to snow before long. There is certainly plenty cold air coming behind it. I'd agree that for your area Sunday and Monday looks pretty good.
  5. I'm surprised the Met Office haven't issued more early warnings for Scotland as there looks as though there could be quite a bit of snow for some parts and would be helpful for those with travel plans. Not unusual though for us to get late warnings. You can actually see quite clearly on the radars the snow moving across the south of the city - although there does look as though there is a shower just now heading more to the north.
  6. Looking at a lamp post light to see if its started snowing. Or in my case keeping looking time and time again to see if its started, still snowing, how heavy, if its turning to sleet/rain etc. etc.
  7. Have just seen tonights ECM and excellent for Scotland with loads of snow. I like how the low pressure is a little further East than on the GFS which would keep the cold going longer and more snow chances for all.
  8. Very different and much improved ECM this morning. Big change from yesterday.
  9. My feeling is that, in general, the Met Office forecasting and reporting of weather for the whole of the UK works well as it is. What I think irked some north of the border and maybe even part of the north of England, more especially in the latter part of this winter, were some of the Met Office warnings and the feeling that they were overplaying what was going on in the south east of England in particular and missing prior warning of a few weather events in Scotland. It seemed on some occasions, after the London snow event, that for a week or so that the Met Office got caught up a bit in the media excitement and this was reflected somewhat in their warnings. In some ways I do think its maybe understandable due to the greater population and the inconvenience or even danger that the weather can cause to a greater number. They are obviously very wary of missing the intensity of an event and the criticism that this could generate. As long as the Met Office strive for accuracy throughout the UK and fend off the some of the south east centric media reporting then continuation of the way things are now is fine by me.
  10. Loch Glascarnoch now -14.6C. That is cold.
  11. I think somewhere in the Highlands will see -15C tonight.
  12. -12C at Loch Glascarnoch by 8pm tonight, 30 centimetres of level snow in Aviemore and snow falling in quite a few places across central and southern parts - good old Scotland - no need for fuss.
  13. About 8 cm so far in Bishopbriggs and still heavy snow. Its been heavy here for about 2 hours although not sure how long this will last before moving on or fizzling out. The band of snow seems to have pivoted a bit so has not really moved through - I'm not complaining though!!
  14. Looks like things could remain cold with snow chances throughout February according to the Met Office. UK Outlook for Wednesday 11 Feb 2009 to Friday 20 Feb 2009: It will continue cold through the end of the week with showers feeding southwards in the northerly flow, these showers will be wintry at times, especially over hills in the south, and at lower ground in central areas and places further north. Over the weekend there is the likelihood that conditions will turn drier with bright spells, but still cold with the chance of a some wintry showers, especially in northern and eastern areas. Overnight frosts will be locally sharp. Through the following week conditions look like they will continue cold with the ongoing risk of wintry showers feeding southwards, these locally heavy at times. Again some brighter spells are likely, but with sometimes sharp overnight frosts. Updated: 1150 on Fri 6 Feb 2009
  15. With the jetstream further south this winter parts of England have definately benefited in the last week or so from being closer to the track of low pressure systems and have been on the right side of marginal which has resulted in a few snow events, while Scotland, although remaining more consistently within the colder air has been a bit drier with our snow events lacking a bit of punch. I would still expect that this winter has got a bit to go with more snow, especially for parts of Scotland. Over the next few days some things to watch are more snow on Saturday for parts of the North East through Saturday (I'm up in the Cairngorms so hopefully a bit but not too much). On Sunday and through to Monday, although the Beeb have been downplaying it a bit and talking about mainly rain, could see snow (although not heavy) for many part of southern, central and western Scotland. Temperatures look at -1C to 1C when the precipitation is around, upper air cold enough, and thickness of about 524 dam also seems condusive for snow. Beyond this although uncertain things may go a bit more North Easterly which would be good for quite a few areas of Scotland. Loads more winter weather to come for Scotland I would think.
  16. Snow getting heavier in Glasgow just now. Bigger flakes (slightly).
  17. You have probably not missed it as actually still snowing in Glasgow. Its just so fine its hard to see.
  18. There is definately heavier precipitation behind the initial band that arrived and has been stuck to the north of the central belt. The winds are still light westerly atm across this area but will turn more northerly throughout the evening. Aviemore now has heavy snow and this was heavy rain a couple of hours ago.
  19. I was outside there and it is snow but really tiny flakes. As the temperature starts dropping it should give a covering but hopefully sooner rather than later.
  20. Its definately very different than the big showers the other day. looks like a slow process.
  21. Tiny flakes but starting to lie in Glasgow.
  22. Exciting weather just now! A lot of possibilities for Scotland over the next few days with a front moving down form the north tomorrow which could give a few hours snow to quite a few places. A couple of other possibilities for heavier snow may be Sunday when a low passes west to east, at the moment this looks as though it will be snow on its northern flank. Although a bit further away Tuesday on the ECM and GFS both have a deep low crossing England that could give snow anywhere. For some widespread heavy snowfall for Scotland over the next few days we probably just need a wee bit of luck.
  23. A good sign is that the band of snow now moving into Scotland seems to be staying mainly as snow as far south as Luton. Just the far SE England where its rain.
