  1. Just went to check the lamp post outside my house, and the bloody thing is broken! How am I supposed to feed my obsession now?! I really had hoped to get stuff done today, but at the slightest mention of snow within 100 miles of my door I downed tools and have been glued to this forum. Must get out more.
  2. Ok yes, well spotted - I meant late January. 37 days is quite a long time, more than five weeks!
  3. I've always wondered if 'areas to the west of London' includes 'west London'!
  4. Mods, please don't move this as it is a genuine question which has been niggling me all winter. I honestly do not understand why such negativity appears so quickly, even - or particularly - from 'respected' posters such as TEITS and Steve Murr. Please, someone tell me why, when cold is shown in FI, we are told by you to 'take it with a pinch of salt', or 'never trust FI', yet when any mild scenario is shown you start shouting 'long way back for cold', or 'game over' etc. I don't understand the psychology. This cold spell is not even over yet, but your tone is as if it never happened. It isn't even mid-January yet, there's still a full two months (at least) in which we can get sustained wintry weather. Apologies if this seems a convoluted post but the negativity which pervades this thread makes it so hard for others to learn sometimes.
  5. Sorry if this is in the wrong place, but how do you 'ignore' someone?
  6. Just seen the latest BBC weather and potentially interesting tomorrow AND Tuesday! If we get two more snow events over the next few days this really will go down as an epic spell in my opinion, for London anyway. 12 cms all said and done in Hanwell, west London.
  7. I've been pondering this also. I think the last time was January 2003. I lived in north-west London at the time and I seem to remember very heavy snow on about the 30th, leaving about 10cms. A couple of days later a front came down from the north, but it was a very weak affair and gave a dusting at the most. What I vividly remember is the BBC getting the forecast utterly wrong. For the very heavy snow on the 30th they forecast light snow showers, and then they ramped up the front a few days later, only for it to be a damp squib.
  8. I think the ramping in the model thread perhaps doesn't help. There was talk from some of 15 or 20cms widespread yesterday, which the Met Office were never, ever predicting. I've learned to take much of what is said in the model thread with a pinch of salt over the years. Saves disappointment.
  9. It hasn't been 'one day of snow'. Two bands of snow last Monday, a good covering in central and eastern parts, and lots of snow across much of the south and west yesterday. That seems ok to me. And now the potential for more tomorrow. Sadly, it will never be enough for some, who seem obsessed with a '91 or '87, and anything less will not do. Always chasing the rainbow.
  10. Cracking cold spell in my opinion. Some people are never happy, if it doesn't snow in their back gardens toys go out of the pram. 'Pitiful'? Not really.
  11. Not straw-clutching at all, but the nature of these events always means it comes down to a bit of nowcasting.
  12. I would not take it as gospel, it'll be more of a nowcast event. Agree you may be a tad too far west to get the heavier stuff. I live in west London so may be in the same boat. To be fair, we had our fun yesterday.
  13. It's funny how everyone thinks other parts of the region gets more snow then them. If I had a penny for every time I've had to sit and watch east Kent get clobbered while London gets nowt. Swings and roundabouts...
  14. Coming down very nicely in Dollis Hill, north-west London, must be about 2cms now. Heavier stuff just out west, but this'll do nicely.
  15. I'm really sorry to ask a 'will it snow' question, but there seems to be questions of marginality cropping up for Monday's snow event in the south-east - could I get someone's opinion on that?
  16. Well dare I say it, things are looking rather good for our part of the world for early next week. Looks like we 'should' see some snow, although how much and where is the real question...personally think areas north of London should do quite well; Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire and the like.
  17. Anyone care to play 'cliche watch' from the model thread? My cliche of the day so far is: 'more runs needed', but I have many others...
  18. Blimey that's quite an update from the Met Office for days 6-15. Certainly far more bullish than I would have thought.
  19. Mr Data you have done a cracking job. Nothing beats a bit of nostalgia!
