  1. Well not a European wide timezone no - but certainly UK wide at the very least! Although I'd go to Euro time (which spans Poland all the way to Spain) myself- just fits me better. Then again I shall do just that when I move to Berlin - although its more easterly position means the yearly daylight timings are practically identical as here.
  2. Thing is Oct only felt warm up to the 8th whereas after that it has felt quite cool with the wind, rain and next to zero sunshine. It is, of course, the mild nights that have meant a warm month so far. The season does look to be progressing though with the plant world changing colour or looking very tired or just dead. The rapid shortening in daylight hours too has made its mark - the feel from 16th Sept to now is quite different even with similar temperatures. Very much looking forward to the warmer and brighter weather - mild nights but with cold feeling sunless days is a waste of warmth!
  3. No because London to Northern Ireland is about 230 longitudinal miles whereas New York to LA is close to 2500 miles! Bit of a scale thing going on there...
  4. Older generations used to contend with a lot of things we no longer have to. Be it colder houses, poorer diet due to shortages, more diseases, limited dental care and so on. My dad told me all about winters when he was young especially the colder ones - it was dreadful at times freezing to death only being able to warm up when you finally reach school - the only place with heating! Of course knowing no better it was just something you deal with - but would he want to go back? No way! We could wash our clothes by hand, eat only basic limited foods, never leave your local area, never go to the dentist and wash only once a week too in order to be as 'hard' as our ancestors but... I think I'll skip! Also, does that apply to pleasantly warm weather like 25-27c too? Or even hot stuff like 30c+? Plenty can't deal with heat either - are they 'soft' as well?
  5. Thing is I'm one of the hardier people I know as far as temperature goes... always last one to put a coat on and first to take it off! But that's when walking around. Sitting motionless is a whole different animal...
  6. Give it a go - sit in one place working for 4 or so hours in indoor clothing. You soon chill at those sorts of temperatures. 17c is great for striding around in, cleaning the house and so forth but when you're sat on a computer at a desk it just gets too chilly. Yes I can put jumpers, coats & hats on but once your hands end up too chilly to type its game over! 16-18c is a lovely outdoor temperature but not suitable for indoors except when wrapped up at night or when doing a lot of activity. You'll find most would agree with me - if only they knew the real temperature of their houses and were doing a similar activity. I keep hearing the "I can sit in a t-shirt at 13c with the window open" talk - now show me the data!
  7. The day 9c is 'balmy' is the day rain becomes 'dry'! Working from home this afternoon and house now 17.5c so yes the heating will be going on the moment I get in.
  8. Well for the majority of England where most people live BST makes far more sense in summer. And until Northern Ireland leaves the UK (!) you're stuck with it... Does Ireland itself follow the same times?
  9. Yes it could be shorter of course but most folks want at least some time in daylight when they get home from a long day. It just makes things easier when you don't wait from 3:30pm Sunday to 9am Saturday to see your home in daylight. So yes people will complain... I would agree staying on BST all year would be easier although I know many wouldn't like it. In the end though winter has too few hours of light to please everyone! But staying on GMT in summer - no no! Around here that's 0330 sunrise and 2030 sunset which would be a ludicrous waste of daylight hours - unless of course you intend to adjust office, shop & school hours along with transportation timetables to go with it. Unlikely I think.
  10. This kind of raw easterly weather isn't so normal for October but what's coming up looks much more normal - wind, rain & mild temperatures with air off the Atlantic - suits me this time of year! Those complaining of the lack of cold - it is only October! Compare October cold in terms of April warmth - possible but generally not very common. And then think about this April - it was still below freezing during the first few days only returning to close to average mid month. Even then we stayed way below average until mid June when it finally warmed up. Perhaps if we hit christmas and its still mild then there's something to complain about!
  11. Very dismal here so having to go for the lamp the moment I got in (5:15). Still I can manage a quick look round/tidy of the garden + grab the veg I need for dinner before darkness finally falls. Not for much longer with the dreaded clock move and all the danger and restrictions it brings. Gladly my move to Berlin is falling only 1 week after the move so thankfully I can avoid the dreadful dark evening commutes this time round. I'll be working from home over there so will do my much needed bike rides just my lunch break instead!
  12. I'd expect brownouts and gas shortages for sure. And yes a lot of folk would end up dead when the heat went off. Doesn't matter if Canada can deal with it - they're used to it. Iraq is used to +50c in summer but I somehow think we'd struggle with that too!
  13. Absolutely horrendous weather today - very heavy rain been going for some time now with little sign of respite. Thought this lot would be further south than this. Annoyingly on a Saturday when I've been trying to pack up my house and now need to walk to the other end of town too - not pleased!
  14. Once we hit 20.5c at 10am I've left it off since. Am about to pack up some things in the house so the steady 19.3c we're now at will be fine.
  15. It came on here this morning as house was down to 17.3c (a 4c fall in 8 hours) but now back to 20.3c after 2 hours heating. You lot with homes at 20c without needing any heating when its only 12c outside just count yourselves lucky! I'd imagine if I didn't heat all day today we'd be pretty close to outdoor temps in here by tomorrow morning. Not an experiment I intend to try!
  16. 14.2c max and we've seen a little sun at times. But mostly dull, damp & windy. Not looking forward to cycling uphill against this lot tonight!
  17. Huge amount of rain overnight - hammering it down for 2 hours on my skylight - not good for sleeping! Today is grey, drizzly and chilly - very much classic easterly conditions. Doesn't seem very autumn like to me - I always associate autumn with Atlantic depressions and SWly-Wly winds - be nice to see some soon!
  18. Running the system regularly now - making it a lovely comfortable 21c except the bedroom which I don't heat so it sits about 18c. Last few weeks in my house so not stressing about gas usage now - shall prioritise comfort!
  19. I always associated northerly flows with ample sunshine with some showers. But this is just endless grey and a stiff cold wind. I guess this is autumn and not winter or spring where northerlies are much cleaner. Still at least we've got a drab cloudy easterly to look forward to. What a contrast to the perfect conditions of Sat, Sun & Tues with its ample sunshine and pleasant temperatures. I guess each to their own but I for one wonder how some folks could wish for this over earlier in the week!
  20. Now is the same kind of 'men' who supposedly need a fan on at 20c? Whatever would you do if you experience some actual hot weather eh!
  21. And boy was I glad I heated this morning - I was well warmed before setting off to cycle downhill into the cold. Think a thin fleece isn't quite up to the job at 7c but especially when going out without gloves!
  22. Very glad I set the heating timer last night - the place has been nicely warmed to 19.4c instead what would have been <16c or lower without.
  23. House nice 'n cosy at 21c with heating rumbling away for 15-20 mins in every hour or so. It's warmer in here now than its been in many many weeks now in actual fact!
  24. Yes that's the default winter mode - I set it to 21c when I'm in then throttle back to 16-17c during the day. Then even on really cold days it can recover in 2-3 hours instead of 5-6 hours if it drops down to 13c or less - which it can easily do in just 7-8 hours of cooling from a heated 21c. I just like looking at the data... that's why I keep looking! Strangely interesting... Anyway on this subject... time to fire her up!
  25. Dropped to 11.4c outside now and inside is 17.3c falling. Yes there will be heating on in but moments!
