  1. So today sorted.. what of tomorrow - its anybodys guess!
  2. Settled is great when it leads to warm/hot sunshine or cold sunny ice days. The odd foggy inversion in the cold part of the year is good too as its quite atmospheric - although must not go on too long or severe sun starvation goes on. When settled is cloudy/drizzly then its cack. Gladly today has delivered warm sunshine at last so long may it continue! The unsettled gales, rain and such belong mid Oct-Nov then bring 'em on!
  3. And here - much like early June - it has hung around all day with very low light levels. At least no nagging cold wind like you normally associate with low cloud set ups.
  4. It was always said the weekend would be cloudy with any warmth peaking on Monday with an increased southerly flow... well its the total opposite! Sat was cloudy at times but bright and sun coming through, Sun was sunny start to finish and lovely and warm, today is still thick low cloud but it is now 18c.
  5. Yep for once the east is most sunny! Shame us east midlanders end up with the worst of both worlds - we had plenty of it from the east and now we've got it from the west!
  6. Can't grumble here at all - very sunny indeed and better than originally forecast. So nice having air going through the house again...
  7. Still cloudy here although bright and just now I saw 30 seconds of sunlight... Still its warmer at last now 17.9c. Feels much nicer to be out in!
  8. I think women in general feel the cold more (I did read this somewhere - think it was a BBC article on turning on heating the other week) and for sure my wife feels it! Her hands go blue/green when she gets chilly - very poor circulation and low tolerance to anything cool/cold. She is half Spanish though if that makes a difference! Even this morning the fire is on - there's no sun and its 14c out. Hardly that chilly for 10am in late Sept of course but the house settled to 16.2c overnight and without sunlight there's nothing else to warm it up bar me, two budgies and a computer!
  9. Hardly.... since when does it make it to 33c here? I can cycle at 11c in drizzle in a t-shirt but like to sit at 20-21c, sleep at 18-19c but adore 25-27c - plenty of variation but not that crazy!
  10. You know I've almost forgotten what its like to be hot when trying to sleep... literally the last time was Jan 2011 in Barbados when I attempted sleep without air con (we gave up!). Before that it'd be 2006 I think back in our old house in that lovely summer. Do remember it distinctly as a kid (my bedroom caught sun until 9:30pm and was well insulated) and my dad telling me to just lie still... On moving from here I might be in for a shock come any warm weather... Still it'll be nice the other 10 months of the year at least!
  11. Like the opposite problem I've been having - gorgeous in the few weeks of warm weather we've had in the last 5 years but terrible in the frequent cool or cold weather! Cycling can be done in t-shirt all day today so we're back over the 'cold line'. Although still gas fire needed to warm this place up a bit.
  12. I'd say winter 'feels' like it runs November to February as that's generally the period where work starts or ends (or both) in darkness. It is getting lighter in Feb but I'd not put it into spring category - a mild day in Feb is in the same way a chilly night in Aug is - a mere taste of the next season. I think all the seasonal time definitions are correct with just the exception of Nov which could easily slip into the winter category.
  13. Agree - if we're having cold then I want it Dec-Jan then gone! This year it dragged on into early summer making for a very short warm season. Far too cloudy today - a lovely start then in it rolled and now its stuck. Seems Monday is the be the best day of this spell - ruddy typical eh! Now we're in late Sept daylight hours are too short to make much use of warm evenings so any good weather really needs to fall at weekends!
  14. Well I look forward to those 2 days of lying snow, the xmas 2 week break and... ermm that's about it I think! The rest of it - the darkness, the endless grey days at 3-5c, the endless forum report emails (!), the vast expense of heating, the lack of exercise, the vast amount of prep you need to go outside, the waking up cold, the missus moaning about the cold, the icy dangers, the dangerous roads... well all of that you can keep!
  15. Less chilly out tonight so got house up to 20c with fire on half power. Looks like we can switch off weekend onwards- hurrah!
  16. Sunny today so office has shot up to 24c and we can open the window again - so much better! 17.3c at home and falling so fire on again tonight.
  17. Sure am sick of the hardcore chill of the last couple of days - only using gas fire at night so far which is fine in evenings (eventually) but the mornings are painful.. the only warm places being bed & shower making it ten times harder to leave either of them! The clothes you put on are cold... my pc's mouse is cold... my watch & wallet are cold... Yes very ready for some warmer weather now!
  18. That I do agree with - I really don't like the dry, stuffy air of a centrally heated building. But then neither do I like freezing to death. Such is the pain of the colder 3/4 of the year... the ease of all windows open and it being nice & warm seem a lifetime away already...
  19. I'm sure they'll thank you for that! No radiators on in our office and it was 19.8c on arrival now rising fast. Wish my ruddy house would heat up like this place does! Although with the unsealed windows you can feel that NWly racing round your feet...
  20. A real chilly start in our house this morning - got up to 16.6c in the living room. I can cope with that for the short bed to shower to out the door but for sure the fire will be going on when I get in - perhaps even the central heating as the fire will take forever to heat it up from such a low value. And no I don't agree with "I wait till October the 14th for my heating" blah blah... it all goes on & off when its cold!
  21. Been out all evening and returned to 17c house so cranking up the fire to max to heat it quick. Otherwise it'll be a very chilly night in bed! 40 mins in we've gained 0.7c... hmmmmmmmmmmm....
  22. Thing with me is I'll be last one to put a coat on and first to take it off when walking around (but then I do walk very fast!). Cycling its around 13c upwards I don't need anything but t-shirt/trousers. But sitting in one place not moving is a whole different thing - especially after a few hours. I need >20c for that - even in a jumper. Even more the case if I'm hungry or not had a hot cuppa in a while. Since I don't do much cycling/jogging/fast walking in my living room thus 21c is the aim!
  23. Yeah they often say 'turn it down 1c to save xxx pounds' although 18c is on the cool side for the living room. Sitting at 17-18c certainly doesn't feel comfortable after a while and also it tends to make you hunch shoulders/tighten yourself up to try to keep warm which does your back no good whatsoever when working on a computer. And of course blood heads to your core leaving the hands/feet/nose icy cold. I'd not considered the blood clotting angle before though - now I shall certainly stick to ~21c in living room (not that it was in question really!). 18c in bedroom will be tricky as all the heat heads upstairs anyway!
