  1. Not bad overall - we actually saw sunlight around lunchtime which is a real first of late. Felt fairly warm too with temps up to 21.5c. Still mostly cloudy but at least I have a vague idea what the sun looks like now!
  2. Not true I'm afraid - this cloud cover does not prevent dangerous UV reaching your skin. Having come across someone yesterday who'd burnt quite badly recently under these grey skies I can certainly vouch for it. She thought it was too cloudy to burn - she was wrong. No doubt it is somewhat less strong than clear skies but the main reason we see less burning under cloud is people are not sunbathing and are more likely to cover up to keep warm. Be careful.
  3. Very frustrating weather - just very brief fleeting sunny spells with mostly lead grey skies. Temps are fine by night but too cool during the day. Was at a wedding yesterday and sitting outside was fine for us blokes in big suits but too cold for the ladies in summer dresses. We did manage a few lovely minutes of sunshine in which it did feel warm enough but otherwise the nagging breeze made for a lot of 'can we go inside please'...
  4. If autumn stays this warm then I'll be a happy man! No signs of autumn whatsoever here since it is still midsummer and temps remain high teens low 20s.
  5. After this week July is starting to loose marks! If that Atlantic high remains I can't see myself awarding 8/10 for summer like I did earlier this week.
  6. Good - can get hot weather in summer, generally less rainfall than further north and west, not as prone to sea cloud as further east Bad - North Sea low cloud - the bane of winter & early spring, generally little snowfall and never the coldest place in winter, less warm & generally cloudier than further south east in summer. Essentially being so central we get the average of what you guys get further north, south, east and west of us!
  7. A warm welcome to the forum! If you could pop your location into your profile/avatar that'd help everyone to know what area you are reporting the weather from. Happy posting!
  8. 8 for me since it's been mostly spot on with only a handful of poor days. I come to my ratings based on... Positives: - Days & evenings I can wear shorts (countless this year) - Number of BBQ's (4 or 5 so far inc some in spring) - How often I can comfortably sit outside the pub early evening and bonus points for late night outside comfort. Triple points for late night in shorts! (this year: lots early evening, a couple late evening inc 1 in shorts). - Times I've had my dinner outside (many) - Good thunderstorms occurring at the right times! (two) - Baking hot cloudless sunny days leading into very warm nights (only one or two of these) Negatives: - Special events ruined by rain/cold (none) - Times soaked going to/from work (one but on a Friday eve so didn't care!) - Times any kind of coat was needed (so far only once since May) - Sub 16c maxima on days coupled with thick cloud and drizzle (two the other week) To get 9 or 10 we'd need more 30c+ temp days of which there have been very few this year although I don't really mind too much with the current warm, dry reliable weather. We could also do with less cloud cover at times to put it into a perfect summer category. Summer 2010 so far goes down as reliably dry and warm although rarely too hot - a consistent summer where you can properly enjoy the outdoors lifestyle over a long period without constantly fretting about what the weather will do.
  9. Chilly (for here) night down to 12.9c now shot up to 20.5c under hazy sunny skies - a lovely start - but will it last...
  10. Think my view of 18c+ all summer is swayed by both my house and temp readings. I've often been getting 16-17c nights (which is more reasonable than 18c+!) but my readings are definitely not official as the sensor is located in a small courtyard that holds the heat. So perhaps realistically I like 14-15c mins! Since my house has no trouble at all cooling off then I'll keep warm nights - it only takes one sunless day max around 15-16c with a nippy east wind on and the we're all windows closed and the shorts go back in the drawer. Poor insulation, thick brick walls makes for pleasant summers and painfully cold winters unlike many modern UK homes where it is often the other way round!
  11. You're right - I'm not quite sure how I'll get over it... It was so dusty too after being undisturbed for over 2 months.
  12. You can keep that! This time of year it should be 18c+ at all times in my book! Sub 6c belongs to Nov-March.
  13. I had to do something I didn't want to do.. I had to put a light jacket on as I walked home from the pub just now! Not worn it in ages now and I can't say I miss wrapping up in clothes - gimme a humidity warmth jacket any night of the week! 14.7c out there now - gimme ~20c for this time of night to make it feel like real summer.
  14. Dew point is only 9c here too which is prob why it doesn't 'feel' very warm (that and the constant cloud which has now finally lifted). Sort of weather that just isn't quite good enough to count as summer feeling - even with the sun we've finally got. Too little too late I think!
  15. Hopefully an improvement tomorrow with temps recovering to the right side of 20c!
  16. In contrast it is very dull here having had no sun at all today. It feels much cooler than recent days/weeks too so not a great end to the week but still - we've not been short this summer of good days - just want more & more now 19.6c max now 19.3c.
  17. Yes a decent day here too - less humid and with ample sunshine (unlike yesterday) and still remaining nice and warm. 24.3c our max so right where I like it to be! I really will miss this almost reliably warm weather when autumn kicks in that's for sure - it's made life so much easier!
  18. Yes true true - it's just that it isn't practical with our current working lifestyles... unless you want a 12 hour working day with a quick nap at your desk!
  19. Very oppressive feeling day here with some hazy sunshine but mostly cloudy and very sticky. It's a struggle to get a proper lungful of fresh air! Dew point only 12c@25c (26.1c max today) so doesn't seem like it should feel this close...
  20. Not sure how that'd work here (and I do often how it works in any modern western country these days) - what would you do for 4 hours assuming you work far away from home? You couldn't (well shouldn't!) go to the pub on your 4 hour lunch break so after a while you'd just end up sat in the office where, assuming air con, it may well be cooler! You'd then not get home till gone 10 leaving no time at all. I think it works if you run a business from home or very nearby but impossible otherwise. As for humidity - today is indeed oppressive and not what I call enjoyable heat. Too little sun, too little fresh air!
  21. But UK heat is very very rarely too much - unlike southern Europe or Africa/Middle East with temps 40c+ (which IS inhospitable for life no doubt). We don't get the sort of heat that kills/injures people or damages crops very often. UK cold on the other hand causes many more problems - e.g. as soon as temp drops below 0c I'm risking broken bones everyday just going to and from work. I injured myself once (not badly) and a friend of mine broke her wrist on ice too. On the other hand I've known no one suffer injury or illness from heat. Funny thing is I also have a large tolerance to cold. I'm coatless long before most people and don't mind extremely low temps despite the risk to life & limb (yes I did get hurt last winter on ice!). I like the extremes - the first week of Jan was perfect winter weather - sunny with icy winds and temps below 0c all day. But as I've said a few times before - most of UK winter is not like that. It is on average 2c-6c under grey skies - what's fun or pleasant about that? At least average summer weather is pleasant even to heat haters (20-22c is the average and isn't at all hot). Either way it's down to taste - I will continue to enjoy this lovely time of year and live in dread of my least favourite (and most unsafe feeling) month of November...
  22. ...but surely if you love the cold why do you like hiding away from it in a blanket next to a fire? It's like me saying I love hot weather because I can run into a freezing air conditioned room! A true cold lover would sit outside in -5c in just a t-shirt soaking up all that cold in much the way I do in 30c heat... Of course I'm just being a facetious fool there but I guess it is somewhat of a valid point about warm lovers vs cold lovers. Heat lovers like to bask in the sun & warmth (since it generally takes hold indoors and outdoors at the same time there's often no choice anyway) whereas the cold lovers seem to want to hide from their climate of choice (with a huge difference temperature wise between indoors and out). Perhaps since cold conditions are much less hospitable to us humans than warmth is.
  23. Yes I'd like to see a wild autumn during October/November (after another sunny & warm Sept of course!). Recent autumns have stayed generally mild and dry which was a kick in the teeth after the last few summers that preceded them. Watching the rain fall all summer only for things to dry up when sunset has retreated to 6pm was very frustrating! Hopefully this year will be the other way round - a good summer followed by a windy & stormy autumn.
  24. I have the same 'problem' only in reverse - desperately craving those extra precious few mins of light during January when it gets dark during the working day. Autumn couldn't be further from my mind having not yet had a good fill of summer yet! Admittedly my favourite portion of it is going now (May-July) but gladly it is still properly light at 9pm as it should be For now... Early autumn is nice - when its still warm and light enough to enjoy outside but the colours are starting to change. Its the post clock move dark before leaving work bit I despise - extremely dangerous and unpleasant to cycle in rush hour traffic when it's just suddenly got dark along with all school/student traffic. The comparison to the daylit and empty roads of the summer holiday season couldn't be more stark.
