  1. Those of you who said it "wouldn't settle in Central London", eat your words

    Snowing heavily here now!

I think that was me! I never said it never settles, just that it takes very heavy snow and very cold temps. Good on you mate! There of London that is snow covered, the better.

Chucking it down here, blowing about in a strengthening wind. Everything is covered again. Must have already added a couple of cm's.

  2. Yeah your quite right, I'm not going to be about for that next round of fun and games but could well be some interesting weather about thats for sure, a band of light-moderate snowfall looks like streaming in from Europe over the weekend, so well worth watching. Wind direction looks good for EA, esp parts that have missed out totally in the last 24hrs.

Are you only expecting light-moderate falls over the weekend? The E/NE flow looks quite potent on the models. Could be some heavy showers piling in surely?

  3. I have my doubts, for sure places further north that are in the snow are going to gfet nailed by a good 4-6 inches but in the screw zone we are gonna be lucky to get more then 1-2cms IMO, esp as the kicker trough that shunts it all south looks pitiful at the moment and once the band to the north tries to come south it will thin and weaken quite readily, as is somewhat happening already.

Its getting heavier here Kold, bigger flakes. Good moderate falls at the moment. I think its moving south very slowly. I think youre to the south-east of me, so should start to pep up where you are too in a while.

  4. Yup, just started getting heavier here in Wanstead, not heading into work, Central Line has a broken rail, must be heading into town!yahoo.gif

I have to say im really lucky, I took time off work just before the cold spell started in December, and I go back on monday! But ive got first two of my professional exams to sit this friday, and the snow is a distraction...

Snow continuing to get heavier, bigger flakes. Moderate falls now.

Latest N24 forecast with Chris Fawkes, and I think he's really improving with his forecasts. Explaining why and how the snow developed last night, explained the variable amounts of snow for different locations. Said tomorrow heavy snow into East Anglia moving into the London area towards the evening. Also said cold for at least a week. I think he's a cold ramper. Good lad.

  5. That band of snow is just to my north, its not moving anywhere right now so could see some decent amounts in Essex this morning....still that looks somewhat like a streamer its got to be said and that zone of instablity should continue steadily to extend south as the trough comes down and everything is shunted south.

Soooo close to that stalled system though!

Me too! It's been snowing lightly here non stop fir the past hour, bu the heavier stuff is just to the north and north east across south Essex. Hopefully it will start to shift south, or the streamer fattens out on the southern end.

  6. Just being cautious.

You are right though and in this type of set up 25cm of snow can easily fall if you lie within a heavy streamer. If anything over the next few days it will be even more important to follow the radar than the BBC forecasts.

By the way im expecting this band of snow over Norfolk, Cambs to intensify during today as it moves S. I reckon some parts could see around 10cm.

No you're right to be cautious. It's only a potential at the moment. Don't want to get our hopes up only to be disappointed.

  7. The usual dollop of misery for me here in London, as I said earlier in the week just a bit of snizzle here from this '1 in 50 year' load of garbage.

A few more wet flurrys for later and then mainly dry for a long time after that.

Yes I'm sure there will be snow for us showing for the next few days on the charts. . . there has been for the last 2 weeks!! :o

Honestly, a 1 in 50 year event and the capital city is planted 30 miles away, if London (main London) can only muster up a bit of sleet from this setup then really I have to be absolutely gutted. . .

. . . and yes the world has ended.

where in London are you? If you're in the centre then I wouldn't be surprised at having no lying snow, but I think the suburbs have done quite well considering nothing was forecast on Monday night for here. In NE London we have about 2-3cm's and west London probably has more. It's all settled and it's only been snow so far. Don't forget, we missed the heaviest snow last night, but in feb we got a huge dumping when many other areas missed out.

  8. The snow is only 30 miles to our N.

This band is already slowly showing signs of widening as suggested by the GFS. However if your expecting 20cm falls then your out of luck. During today and into the rest of this weekend its going to be a case of several 3-4cm falls constantly topping up our lying snow.

Yesterday proved that nowcasting is far more important than using the Met O warnings or the BBC white blobs. Im sorry but far too much attention is put on the BBC graphics when you should be concentrating on what is exactly happening.

Small top ups of 3-4cm's even into the weekend? That easterly this weekend is looking quite potent. There is a potential for more heavy snow from the north sea for a large part os SE England and East Anglia. Potential for all sorts of streamers to set up.

This afternoons snow in the SE will prob be a couple of cm's but this weekend could be a lot worse.

  9. South London is getting a pounding at the moment. And it has stalled to the south of central London and is moving west. Too far south of me. Damn irritating. All eyes to the next snow band moving south during the day over the SE.

I so want to cry off work and cuddle up on settee but am going to have to make an effort to go in aren't I.....Still coming down quite heavy here but is becoming rather sleetish. Balls. Off for a bath !

How much lying snow do u have?

  10. Well after a few hours of snizzle, it is beginning to snow here again, and the warm sector seems to have been eradicated. Let's hope the ppn holds up and we will all be happy bunnies!

Gonna wind-down now, happy lamp-post watching and good night/good morning to the remaining hardcore.

    Scott.

Nite mate. Pure snow here. On the lighter side of moderate at the mo'. Although the radar keeps wanting to stream the snow north from the channel. The centre of the low is pushing SW so its only a matter of time before this arc leaves London and heads SW. All eyes to the north of the region tomorrow morning.

  11. Ok thankyou for the info. just off to bed now for a couple of hours and up again at 7 to get the children to school but if its open do I send them in is the dilemma I'm in because of more snow forecast for Herts? If I ask them I wonder what they want to do lol:doh:

Its hard to say really. It depends how much snow there will be, and im not too sure. Possibly 3-5cm's? Its unlikely to be a complete dumping, but I could be wrong.

  12. is this afternoon/tonight still on for the far South East Corner? East Kent? It's meant to pass over us and give us some snow isn't it?

Another band of snow is meant to push south from the North Sea and hit parts of East Anglia, Essex, London, Herts, along the M4 and then push down south into E/W Sussex and Kent in the evening. Kent should see snow tomorrow evening. Places further north during the afternoon.

  13. That band just south of London certainly has been pepping up over the last hour or so Sno. But the centre of the low is now on its south westward track and is pulling that band with it. I don't think it's going to get much further north or east than it already is. :p

How have you done from tonight?

It looks as though it should reach the northern extent of london before pulling SW. I think we're in for a little bit more snow in the next hour. Probably not amounting to more than a cm or so.
