  1. Blue skies coming from the east here. Thawing snow getting very wet and claggy in Leith,

Took me the usual 30 mins to track down all the stashed away salopettes, mini-skis, sledges etc

quick cup of cocoa though and we're off to the northern slopes of The Braids.

  2. No probs Lorenzo. I'm trying to reconcile what looks like a generally flat picture out there in the North Sea (visible cloud from satellite) with are undoubtedly blobs forming out the there on the radar.

Ach it'll do what it wants anyway!

Cloud breaking to my east again, expecting the sun to come out again shortly. Some street level thaw ongoing here but no great loss on grass and it would take something a bit warmer than we have currently to shift it from there, so no anxiety at By-Tor towers.

@by-tor Would need to go and teach myself how to spot that !

Positive Vorticity Advection perhaps?? Steve Murr and Paul are probably all over it in the London & SE Thread but it's growing at such a pace that don't have time to wade through it, there may be something in the guides?

  3. Many thanks for that Lorenzo. On that basis, the odd shower or momentary pulse apart, it doesn't look like we're primed for a general convection conveyor belt over the coming hours ?

Satrep from 0900 identifies as StratoCumulus sheets.

Image below shows the cold air pouring off the continent, one of my favourite sights in Winter !

Yr.No animation also shows the snow machine invading the Grey Sc sheets as time progresses, so swizzle interspersed with the odd flurry courtesy of some blobs I think.

Very still and hypnotic today, pretty surreal that snow just harmlessly meanders about on it's way to ground level, everything in slow motion.

  4. Cheers LS, fair to say that as uppers get a bit colder again later that we *should* see better convection as the day goes on ? Currently no shortage of cloud here but no serious vertical development either...at best the odd flake making its appearance known.

Marginality issues seem to be caused by this slight pool of -7C uppers:

As these get mixed out through the day the situation will improve again:

After that it gets colder before we have Monday to contend with, which going by the ECM/UKMO would be an all snow event but the GFS hinting at a real nervy time for those on the east coast.

  5. We've all been there Ally, it's very rare for us all to get these events uniformly. Lots of twists and turns to come over the next few days and no-one can honestly say what will happen up here for better or for worse. Hope it turns your way and for others too.

Almost raining here now, such a disappointment you wait a week for snow only for it to be washed away, I give up :(

  6. No overnight loss and in fact Snow gently falling again here in Leith, beautiful stuff.

Amazing temperature plunge to -4c at Embra Airport, we have been really lucky in the Embra area that so many factors have helped us out during a potentially otherwise very marginal situation. but right now at least it couldn't be better. Sledging this morning With the youngster I think!

  7. cheers LS, not as bad as I feared then. Being greedy I would like to have seen the skies clear a bit and get a bit of frost in all that soft fluffy stuff out there....but its not going to be leaving the cold ground anytime soon, at least not the grassy parts.

Still hard to believe that 2010 chart was end of November, astonishing !

It's not really much different, although the flow then was reinforced by a better cold pool over Scandinavia:

  8. Double luck here in Leith tonight. not just getting on the end of that squall streamer thing. But after praying all day for the synoptic flow to go north of east, in fact the current just south of east has given us a bit of protection from being right on the coast. Seeing 2c and 3c further up the east coast where that SE onshore wind looks pretty aggressive. Things can and probably will change, but for now we seem to be in relative shelter in the short-term

Don't know how the uppers are looking but I'm assuming not quite as good as they were in the 2010 easterly.

  9. Add it to the list of epic met winters fails LS up here. it's quite a long list now.

Met office have once again failed, utterly, to predict this. No orange warning for the areas that needed it most even though NMM and yr.no hinted at this squall line. Why the hell did they fail to issue warnings for the right areas just a few hours before it kicked off? They have improved in recent years but this was quite a poor show IMO

  10. Quite a sight on the radar isn't it ? it's possible that's happened in my lifetime but certainly one of the more unusual ways to get snowed on in this part of the world. Streamer or rather squall going back to NE England ... Aye, quite something.

This streamer going through East Lothian/East Embra looks like it could go on for a while. Awesome

  11. Aye, nae pain, nae gain LS... Happy for us coasties to take our chances though. For the most part in 09/10 and first half of 10/11 it worked out OK. Looking good enough I think...

Word of warning - the change to a more easterly wind might actually increase marginality at the coast as dewpoints start to rise a bit. I wouldn't worry too much and the fact that winds are going to get lighter might help a bit too but marginality is going to start to creep in at the Fife and Angus coasts. Improving by tomorrow evening though.
