  1. We don't have a great climate, but it is a lot better than northern England and Scotland for hot weather IMO. Nowhere in the UK is particularly sunny relative to the rest of the world, but at least in the SE we have decently warm summers that can make up for that. London is pretty much the same as Paris and the northern quadrant of France in that sense.
  2. Another nice day and another warm evening to come! I've had my windows wide open for the past 8 nights as the temperatures have only dropped to about 15-18C. It's been a good spell of weather although nothing exceptional, so all in all a pretty nice average warm May spell which we always seem to get every year. Looks like staying warm in the south until Friday.. at the weekend temperatures here down to average values around 20C, but high pressure looks like building again by next Monday, so it could only be a 2 day blip.
  3. another warm and sunny day.. looks like it won't cool down here till Thursday at least... lows still in the 14-17C range and highs in the 22-27 range
  4. I don't understand how Scotland manages to always do well from warm spells in May, almost reaching 30C, yet in summer they don't do as well.
  5. This isn't hot at all for me, it's very pleasant! I'm probably more accustomed to it though, because since 2006 we have reached 30C in May, June, July, August, September, October and were just shy of it in April a few times. 26-28C warmth is very nice and is only a few degrees above the average max for July here, also saying that since 2006 we have had quite a few 33s, 32s etc and only when it starts getting to that kind of temperature do I really start to find it gets too hot
  6. Warmest May temperature I've experienced was a few years ago in London when it was 32C or something, I remember it feeling very hot and sticky.. 2006 was magical, I remember just constant sun, it was like we had shifted 10 degrees south in latitude. Temperatures were constantly in the mid 30s and nights were 20C.. the average maximum temperature for July came in at about 29C.. it would have been a hot month even by Mediterranean standards. I have a feeling that this summer is going to be good... high pressure looks like it doesn't want to go away, we have had a poor last 2 months in terms of warm and sunny weather, and the recent poor-average summers suggest that we will buck that trend soon.
  7. 20-22C is nice, but with a breeze and unless there are cloudless skies (in which case it would probably be higher than 20C anyway) it can feel chilly when you are inside, and the temperature will drop more quickly in the evening making it not as comfortable to sit outside in shorts and a T shirt. In the same way, I can understand people not liking warm nights, but people suggesting that 12-14C is hot to sleep in confuses me a bit!
  8. Hahaa, not talking about what I think you are suggesting! Film4 and channels like that often have some decent films on, sometimes some classics
  9. I can definitely understand people getting annoyed at people who sleep in and as a result are late for work etc One thing I think is unfair though is the notion that people who get up late are 'lazy.' I definitely am not a lazy person, I do a lot of sport, go to the gym, do lots of work and study (I'm a student) but also do my fair share of partying and late night clubbing etc. I think that I simply find that there's more things happening later at night then at say 7 or 8am, so I prefer staying up later and in return waking up later to compensate for that. For example I usually find that there are some good films on late at night.
  10. It's more down to my routine than anything and how late I go to bed.. also maybe because I'm younger my body might just be different! But I never feel quite right the next day unless I've got about 8 hours sleep.
  11. I wake up from 10-12 normally, or earlier if I have lectures in the morning. Sun doesn't make a difference!
  12. High pressure looks like it won't go out without a fight, and every time a low comes it gets pushed away. I have a feeling we will see this pattern throughout June - i.e a good month for heat lovers. Next week on the 18Z looks like high pressure wants to stay in control - it looks good for the whole of the UK for a change instead of just us in the SE - so enjoy it while you can up there!
  13. Yes, I wouldn't be surprised if we hit 30 on Thursday in London, but we may come just short. This spell shows that you don't need amazing conditions for hot weather, just high pressure and clear skies and you get temperatures approaching 30 by day and staying in the high teens at night. We haven't even got particularly warm uppers. If we had a southerly airflow we could expect +5C to these temperatures.
  14. Ideally, about 28C by day and 18C by night. Interspersed with some days over 30 and some days at 25C. This warm spell is good though, it shows that you don't need amazing conditions for hot weather, we have a north easterly flow here but are still predicted about 28C later this week.
  15. I have a feeling that this summer is going to be a great one.. and that would be perfect if this came off! Would be good for the Olympics as well
  16. It's funny how it feels so hot here, but it's only average July max temperatures for this area! One thing I'm looking forward to is the warmer evenings, with temperatures staying up to 14C and probably staying at 20C till 9/10pm. Brilliant weather
  17. Yes, these types of spells happen ever year.. it's only because of the awful weather we've had recently that it feels so good.. I can't remember a Spring with as few 20C as this year..
  18. Ahh, what a shame that it will still be another 5 weeks after that until sunset is 8:30pm.. so we have about 3 months of daylight at least this long
  19. Well.. this is definitely a topic that interests me a lot.. it is so fascinating. Just thinking about the size of our solar system, compared to the size of our galaxy, and then compared to the size of the observable universe.. it is mind shattering. My personal opinion is that we are almost certainly not alone. I would say that it is impossible that we are alone. Why? Well for a start, the vast size of the universe and the number of stars puts everything in favour for life. Statistically speaking, it is a mathematical impossibility for life to not exist somewhere else. If you then look at our own planet then it becomes even more probable. Bacteria can live in the most hostile places, from deep ocean floors to scorching temperatures. We also have a very narrow minded view that life elsewhere will be similar to us. Whilst it is probably more favourable for life to be carbon based due to the advantages of carbon and the bonds you can make with it, it is by no means a given that all life is based on this. I think that there is probably life in our solar system, albeit in small bacteria form in the moons of Jupiter and Saturn. I can't remember the name of the moon, but one of Saturn's moons has methane gas in the atmosphere, an almost certain indicator of life seeing as unless something was still producing methane, then it would disappear from the atmosphere within months.
  20. still about 6 weeks until the solstice.. and even then sunset stays the same for about 2 weeks, and then it's a further 4 weeks until sunset is about 8:30pm.. so we still have a good 12 weeks of days at least this long fortunately
  21. Warm nights are brilliant. When we get 30C that usually brings night temps of 18-21C here, and I don't find it hard to sleep in. The added bonus is that I can open my window wide to get some fresh air in my room.
  22. Down here we are sheltered from northerlies and north westerlies, and anything from the east is usually warm during summer. Under sunny skies it's pretty hard to drop below 20C even in a northerly. A few years ago in mid May we had sunny skies and a brisk northerly but temperatures were still hitting 22-23C
  23. This really has been an awful month. Here's to hoping that after breaking the run of warm Aprils, we can finally break the run of poor summers though.
  24. I would also agree that decent summers aren't over, at least IMBY. 2006 was a great summer here.. the average July max temperature was about 28.5C, 5C above average, and that is exceptional. Since then, i'd agree that the UK as a whole has had poor summers, but they haven't been terrible for different regions. My sense of a good summer is different from others as I live in probably the warmest part of the UK during summer, where average July max's are about 24C. I can definitely understand the frustration from other members who complain about temperatures struggling to reach 20C for weeks when that is almost a given everyday here, but 2008 aside, the last few summers have all had decent spells. 2009 here was ok, If I remember correctly, both 2009 and 2010 had a 2 week period here with 28-32C temperatures during Wimbledon. July 2010 was decent, I remember the temperatures were constantly 24-27C and didn't go below 23C all month. Last year had a good June, with our highest temperatures since 2006 at 33C. The only really disappointing months have been August in recent years.
  25. I think you missed the point.. it will feel cold which was the point I was getting at.
