Wintry blast of 10th/11th April 1978

April 1978 was a cold month (CET: 6.5°C)  with a particularly potent wintry snap around the 10th/11th that brought severe frosts and disruptive snowfalls

This was my earliest memory of snow for which I am certain of the date.

I have a very distinct memory of waking up on Monday 10th April (I was living in Cheshire at the time) to a snow cover and being surprised, as I didn't associate April with snow.

My earliest memory of snow full-stop was slightly earlier, January 1978, but cannot recall the exact date.

Interesting to note the article saying could have cold springtimes number of years, indeed cold northerly outbreaks were a feature of many following springs, 79, 80, 81, 83, 85, 86, 87, 88. 89, 90 all brought snowy airstreams mid spring, sometimes in May i.e. 79.

i don't remember this at all..i remember the heavy snows of the previous months but this seems to have completely passed me by

 cheeky_monkey I remember playing tennis in the snow, April 11 was my first wedding anniversary.

 Just read Cumbria weather report for April 1978. A cold dry month it says with mostly easterly and northerly winds. 5cms snow here on 11th , a further 5 cms on 13th.

A max of only 3.5C in Coventry airport on the 10th before dropping to -3.4C the following night.

Only comparable temperature on the 10th April I can see is in 1924 with a max of 3.9C. The April was cold overall; CET of 6.5C the 40th coldest, and an average of 5.9C in Coventry!
