0800rs Sunday 27/2/05

This morning is overcast with moderate snow falling.

Winter gave a good coating of snow falling on to overnight frozen ground, catching many by surprise I would think. Yesterday's light showers petered out during the day, leaving rain and a very rapid thaw. However temperatures plummeted during the night as cold arctic air dug in across the country. The 2cm of fresh lying snow now brings the total to about 14.5cm since Monday evening - snow at some point on each of seven consecutive days now in late Februaury.

As the current band of rain/sleet/snow passes through, the air behind will be drier, brighter and generally much more stable. Temperatures will remain around freezing and will fall away again this afternoon and into this evening giving a hard frost. There is the possibility of convective showers building in the North Sea and blow in on the light North Easterly, may produce snow showers for eastern coastal regions.

Expected high of 2C, feeling like -2C with windchill.

Good Morning folks

Well there has been more snow than we predicted!

Worst affected seem to be coastal areas of Essex, Kent and parts of Sussex with up to 5cm. These showers will keep going for a time before starting to die out later today. There could be another 2-3cm before than.

Some lighter snow showers have occurred over parts of northern England and have spread into parts of Greater Manchester and Cheshire. Now extending into some of Wales. In general these are giving just a covering and they too will die out during the day.

Elsewhere there could be an isolated mostly light snow shoer in a few places.

regards

John Holmes
