[Summer of 95]

The first August to have a CET of >18C was 1747 with 18.3

The next occasion wasn't until 1911 with 18.2

So from 1659 to 1910, there was only one August with a CET of 18.0 and greater, that being 1747. From 1911 to present, there have been 8 such Augusts.

2003 18.3

All but one of those Augusts (including 1747) in years ending in an odd number I see, the one exception only just scraped 18C.

June 1990 was only the 7th sunniest month for that year for England and Wales. In order: July, May, August, April, September, March then June.

Summer 1954 was so dull that not one of the summers months was in the top 3 sunniest months for that year. In order: April, September, May then June.

Spring 1948 was incredibly sunny, the sunniest spring in the areal series with 598.7hrs for England and Wales, sunnier than any of the summers from 1997 to 2005 inclusive

The summer of 1879 was incredibly wet, so much so that the 3 summer months were the wettest months for that year. In order: August, June, July

Here's an odd one, 1782: June 1782 dry compare to the two preceding and succeeding months

April 1782: 139.0mm

May 1782: 142.4mm

June 1782: 55.3mm

July 1782: 131.7mm

Aug 1782: 150.8mm

Another odd one sunshine wise: 1971

May: 223.0hrs

June 138.1hrs

July: 232.6hrs

Aug: 132.5hrs

Sep: 165.7hrs

March 1947 was so wet (177.5mm), it was more than the combined total of the next two wettest months for that year

1768 is the 3rd wettest year on record for England and Wales with 1247.3mm and yet March only contributed 12.8mm

Most people know that August 1912 is the wettest August on record with 192.9mm but what most people don't know how dry April was with just 9.0mm. The greatest contrast between two months in terms of rainfall within a year

There has only been one year where April has been the wettest month of the year and that was 1818 with 135.6mm

For Scotland, July 1931 was so dull, it was duller than October and was only the 8th sunniest month for that year.

Huge differences between the lowest minimum and the highest maximum recorded the next day in the UK

The CET for the first 4 days of June 1975 was just 8.65

The CET for the first 10 days of April 1917 was just 2.1C

The CET for the period 16th of March-15th of April 1837 was a staggering 2.1C

The first half of August 1865 was 3.5C colder than the first half of September 1865.

The second half of October 1817 was 3.9C colder than the first half of November 1817

The first half of October 1974 was 0.5C colder than the second half of December 1974

The CET average for the last week of September 1895 was an amazing 18.0C

For 3 consecutive years (1910, 1911, 1912), November was colder than the following December.

6 of the Decembers of the 1910s were warmer than the previous November

For 3 consecutive years (1974, 1975, 1976), January was warmer than the following March

1974: an interesting year

January was warmer than the following two months, whilst December was warmer than the previous two months.

December 1974 was actually the 7th warmest month of 1974

1833 was a peculiar year: February was warmer than March, May was warmer than June, November was cooler than December.

I don't know whether this has been mentioned but I find interesting that November 1919 had a CET of 3.3c and was atleast 1.9c colder then the following December January and February.

....4 years later (1923) November also had a CET of 3.3c and was also colder than the following 3 winter months.

Oddly, there has never been a December with a CET of 5.9. Yet there have been 11 with a CET of 5.8 and 7 with a CET of 6.0

Do you have access to the Daily CET series? I've never been able to find it anywhere, at least not for free or without a research permit.

Looking through newspaper archives, I was struck by this. Oakes meteorological  station, Huddersfield, 2nd March 1947 (9.6 hrs) was the sunniest day for that station since 29th July 1946 (10.3 hrs).

Whitby in N Yorkshire reported its warmest day of the year on 29th March 1965.

The best summers in the 20th century were in years which ended in an odd number, bar 1976.

Surprised that August 1976 doesn't appear in the hottest Augusts listed earlier.

i see that 2008 did not break the summer trend of no warm dry summers ending in 8..but i assume 2018 did ?

 Weather-history Not forgetting that during this period 20th September 1946 was the worst flooding in the Calder valley,Oaks being just a few miles from here.Also that sunny day wouldnt last long as i believe March 1947 was the wettest march on record.

Out of the 100s of posts i've done in the historic section in the last 2 years, i've likely mentioned a few quirky stats which I can't remember now, but one that stands out which I haven't mentioned on here before was the longest rainbow, Trevor Harley writes:

Although he does seem to be a little sceptical of it as he says   "although that seems awfully long to me."

Now we do! After the updates to the CET series, December 1977's figure is 5.9C.

 

Looking through the CET data there are a lot of from recent but they're easy to spot. CET data has been going for around 365 years now, so a some of these have quite a low of chance of being repeated:

- 2023 and 2024 were the first 2 consecutive years to have identical June and September CETs and all 4 had a .0 decimal to the CETs.

- September 2023 was the first September to have a CET in the 17s.

- May 2024 was the first May to have a CET in the 14s.

- Before 2007, there were no Aprils which had a CET in the 11s or above, 5 years later, an April with a CET in the 12s happened.

- There wasn't an August with a CET in the 19s until 1995. There hasn't been any August with a CET in the 19s so far this century.

- Since 1958, there hasn't been a March with a CET in the 9s.

- The warmest Januarys' to Junes' only have 1 month where the warmest month was after 1994 and that is April (2011). Meanwhile all the warmest months between July - December have occurred since 1994.

- December 2015 was warmer than all but 1 November. The next warmest December is 1934, and nearly 30 Novembers were milder than Dec 1934. Bear in mind, the December CET average is 2.5C colder than November.

- 13th June 2023 finally broke the streak of not seeing 30C on this date.

- Autumn 2000 was so wet that if the current wettest April, May, and June happened in a row, it would still be drier than that autumn. Some of the driest years in the EWP series are only around 100-200mm wetter than that autumn!

5 out of the 7 winters were sub 2C, all winters had a below average January. January 1829 was colder than Januaries 1985 and 1987.

Looks like we only have to wait until winter 2028/2029 guys for a decent one. Knowing our luck it’ll be the mildest winter on record…
