There's a few leafs poking through the soil where the sun has been directly hitting the earth but other then that, they haven't had their head poking through. There’re suually out by the start of March.

On my dog walk today I noticed the hedgerows and spring flowers had leaped ahead since the I did the same walk on Thursday. The blackthorn had starting flowering and even a few of the hawthron had started to break into leaf (having said that we are at least 6 weeks behind recent springs)

Haven't got any Daffodils at all here yet,

something that I normally notice, because my young son, got told off

a couple of years ago for chopping them all down with a stick,

outside our neighbours house :)

Well with the rain and mild weather over the last few days the garden has taken on a new lease of live. Daffs are out :) and so are the weeds  .

One days sunshine and all our daffodils will finally be out but after 7 days rain the garden is sodden and only the weeds seem to be enjoying this current wet spell.

The first Daffodil opened up in my garden today, 14 days later than last year but one day ahead of 2001. The latest date for the first Daffodil here is May 4th in 1986.

This year has been quite bizarre, seeing blooming daffodils over the Easter weekend was weird, you don't normally see them when Easter's in March let alone mid April, still a few around here now.

Next to look out for is the Bluebell.

Indeed, there are still a few around here, and it's May on Monday! Another thing I noticed was that when the tulips were opening up, some daffodils were still to open, something I have never seen before, as usually the daffodils are dead before the tulips come out.

Well AF you can in fact stagger the seasons of both daffodils (I include here the narcissi) and tulips by chooing carefully from a specialist catelogue (such as Blooms or Van Tubergen): there are narcissi such as the old fashioned and delicate "Phesants Eye" that will flower in London and mild areas in April and tulips such as the dwarf species tukips that can flower as early as February. Main stream tulips can extend from March to May (the last tend to be the exotic "Parrot" tulips). At the moment I have just seen the last of my narcissis and have my late tulips just coming to their peak. With careful planning you can ensure a good display of bulbs from mid Jan to mid June...

Indeed ACB, my point was that this didn't happen last year with the same sets of bulbs. I've also bought summer flowering daffodils, which flower May- June, which I never knew even existed before, daffs in summer, lol.

Sorry I should have acknowledged that!

I am intrigued as to the "summer flowering daffs"...do you have any further info (such as varietal names or botanical names)? I have never heard of them!

Here are some I have bought.

Summer Narcissi 'Grand soleil d'Or'

Flowers May- August

Summer Narcissi ' Avalanche"

Flowers May- August

Summer Narcissi 'Erlicheer'

This one looks rather unusual I think.

Flowers May- August

It appears they haven't been around all that long, they are the result of latest horticultural developments. I bought them from this site.

They're under the "Bulbs and Tubers" section if you are interested.
