Have just heard a very low grumble of thunder somewhere after a heavy 15-minute squall.

    from John Holmes

As promised last night here is my morning synopsis for the country.

    Wind

Not expected to reach warning limits with the strongest in the south west and Channel approaches along with parts of Wales.

Direction south west perhaps more westerly later

Speeds, in these areas, increasing to mean 25-35 mph with isolated gusts of 40-50mph, an outside gust of 60mph or so is possible.

    Weather

Last night's trough with its band of showers should soon clear the south east corner of England and East Anglia.

Showers already around south and west coasts will continue and spread inland. Some will be heavy and squally with gusty winds; hail and thunder are a possibility. Central and eastern areas will see convective cloud developing during the day with rather more isolated showers. These may pep up on any minor troughs that swing east.Upper air ascents suggests tops in the west to 24,000ft but lower in the east.

The latest satellite imagery shows a very active area off the north west coast of Ireland and around our western and south western coasts.

    To sum up:

Showery, some heavy, possibly hail and thunder and strong winds for the south west but NO Alert is being issued.

    regards

    John

    ps

    add re snow

no significant amounts of snow anywhere other than the cairngorm mountain area with perhaps 1-3cm above 2,000ft. Elsewhere hail/sof snow in the heavier showers, chiefly over hill tops and not lying, also chiefly for the north of the country.
