Currently a very unexpected thunderstorm in Leeds- the heavens opened about 10 minutes ago and there has just been a big loud crack of thunder.

Spots of rain here and gone very dark. Rumbles of thunder in the east.

Looks like the massive cell that has popped up out of nowhere along the M4 corridor is about to hit us!

Has been upto 22.3C here this afternoon, currently 19.2C

Had a few tremendous claps of thunder in the past 2 hours, one piece of fork lightning but the rest was just sheet, did cause the lights to fail for a minute or so though! More coming now, looks to be the main storm.

Unlike my earlier waffle in the general storm discussion, here is a concise report for this evening.

18.30 was the start of action with cloud thickening from the NE, as I drove a few miles E it became dark with low rolling cloud that lifted into Mammatus & Alt Cas, I saw lightning approx 5 miles away.

Several storms seemed to affect the village I was in (Bratton) with intermittent thunder and quite frequent orange CC & IC lightning - some of it overhead but without rain. It was high based cloud.

That storm cleared about 20.00 and it was quiet for about an hour until flashes appeared over Salisbury Plain around 21.00. These happened approx every 2/3 minutes until 22.00 and then sparingly (but spectacularly with a reasonably close strike) until 22.30. Nothing since then.

Very little rain here, no measurement will be taken until the morning as it's still raining now.

A Decent Storm here tonight with the first thunderclaps around 8, and lightning before 9, it lasted until about 11, but it seems all clear now.

As Jackfrost says some of the lightning tonight was very impressive.
