hi

Another first class presentation by the duty forecaster this morning. Good use of synoptic charts right out to Friday with the rainfall charts for the UK shown for each day.

Was a good forecast john, yet another new face to me doing the forecast, I'm amazed how many different forecasters there are now - I guess that they need alot more now to cover N24, BBC world, BBCi etc. One used to remember all the forecasters on the BBC as household names, and you could probably count them on two hands.

Never seen him before. Didn't like the way they cut him off at the end when he was summing up. Just needed any few seconds. Come Beeb pull your finger out.

I understand it's all computer automated these days , so if he runs over with the forecast in his time slot they just chop him off.

Slightly off topic, did anyone take over Helen Youngs postition as I can't see anything on the BBC web site

It was his fault: he would have a clock next to the camera showing how many seconds left for the broadcast, he clearly overran. Tomasz Schafenaker, a good presenter.

Showers in the North and West this afternoon with more general rain sweeping East overnight with an occlusion.

Tomorrow it'll be windy in the East with rain clearing then showers, scattered showers in West.

Tuesday sunny with some showers around mainly dry in East.

Late tuesday into Wednesday a warm front slowly extends NE bringing rain or drizzle to Western/SW'ern areas dry in the East.

Thursday rain spreading across S'ern and Central areas of England and Wales.

Friday sees rain across N'ern areas, drier in the South and fairly warm.

I think this was the gist of it anyway :)

hi

There is an interesting difference showing from 2 model centres for the probable weather for 12z Thursday of this week.

One from the UK Met O and one from GFS.

I will post the charts as I get them copied.

John

here is the UK Met O chart, probably based on 00z run today

post-847-1157305226_thumb.jpg

and below is the GFS 12z version from today for the same time on Thursday

post-847-1157305342.jpg

It will be interesting to see what the actual shows on the day!

John

At first glance they seem not dissimilar but the pressure is almost 10mb lower with GFS which gives a lot more wind than the Met O version. Both in similar positions though.

As often is the case, 'the devil is in the fine detail'

one of the reasons I raise this topic is that its about the period of highest tides in a long time around the east coast. IF the GFS version is nearer the truth then it could cause problesm along parts of the east coast.

Obviously the Net Wx forecast team will be watching this possible event.

Yes I noticed there could be a problem on Thur/Fri according to the GFS but hadn't noticed the MetO fax chart so thanks for pointing that out. Lets hope the MetO have it more correct as they usually do in my opinion.

Susan Deacon today - as usual very thorough. Main uncertainty is Thursday with the prediction of a wave developing on the cold front which is predicted to stall across E England down to the Isle of Wight for a while - before pushing east on Friday. 15mm in lowland areas and up to 30mm on high ground.

A whole set piece on the weather and the role of the observatory in Greenwich on the devlopment of the Met Office was included earlier in the programme. Thoroughly enjoyable

Ah but how do you know they haven't married? :)

As a listener to the Janice Long show I know that Deakin has recently got married.

Generally well presented. Failed to mention this mornings storms over North West of England just saying light rain. More heavier rain over Scotland. Overall a mild wet week with SW winds. Uncertainty when the remains of Helene come over us as too how windy it will be. However plenty of rain about.

He explained it all quite well considering he's never done it before, dissapointed about no proper forecast for friday though.More very mild nights for the coming week,oh joy <_<
