I believe some members here have reported large temperature drops before and around dusk akin to a vigorous cold front passing through. On the coast down here the sea moderates and we just don't get the range or rate of change.

I think the sea acts like lagging on a water tank for us:

Although the blip in the minima 5 days ago at the start of the current fine spell, was at odds with the peak of the maxima on that day.

Yes, theres been some very large variations over quite small areas. We only reached 9.2C here yesterday, so 6 degrees difference in about 10 miles. Quite remarkable.

i have noticed a large difference between the temperatures in the central London parks ( Hyde, Green, St James) and that of the surrounding city when i have been cycling home after dusk these past few days .

i reckon there has been about a 4 or 5 degrees C difference each day so far between the temps in the parks and the city at around 7pm . very interesting. i certainly have never noticed the "park effect" as pronounced as this, in mid winter before. its usually most pronounced during an early summer or a late autumn warm spell.

Min here last night was 2.7c, already up to 13.3c at noon and will probably max out close to 15c. So a diurnal range of around 12c look quite likely, which is pretty good going for this very temperate neck of the woods.

Amazing stuff again today, the temperature in Manchester went from 2C at 9.20 to 11C at 11.50. Temperatures seem to continue rising until about 2 or 2.30 and then there is quite a sharp drop after 4pm.

Yes indeed Reef,

I noticed a wide range of local temps on the Yorks/Humber MetO site too.

-1c at Manc Airport at 8am, 11c now, probably 15c by 3pm then drops like a stone by 5pm...bit bonkers. It's like having two seasons on the same day, from deep winter to late spring to deep winter in what, 12 hours...

Very much the same here - I went from 4.2c at 9am to 13.3c at noon, so a rise of 9.1c across 3hrs. However it was only 5.8c at 10am, so the rise of 7.5c across the 2hrs to noon looks even more stark.

I think you're thermometer's either faulty or in the sun.

18.8C is too high.

He means the difference between the two temperatures 16C max and -2C min, not max temperature of 18.8C!

18.8C is the range between the min and max, not the temperature

Sorry if I was not clear. That was a diurnal range of 18.8c!

Is that acceptable? Thought it would be clear enough owing to the thread title :db:

We managed a Max of 16.6C and a min 0.1C. I wonder what the range was in lower parts of Sheffield.

Fell slightly short of yesterday in the end, with only 14.8c, but another gloriously fine, sunny day that actually felt warmer with less breeze.

After 5 in a row I'm now being greedy and hoping for much the same tomorrow, but I suspect that pesky low cloud over the continent might even drift this far west by morning... :db:

Just poking around the interweb and found this from 2005

As expected, the most significant trends (at the 1% level) are for increasing temperature, with mean temperature increases varying from over 0.8 °C for the Midlands and East Anglia since 1914, down to 0.4 °C in North Scotland. However, there was virtually no trend in mean temperature between 1914 and 1987, and it is only since 1987 that the temperature has notably started to increase. The winter is the only season which has not seen significant increases during the 1914 – 2004 period. Increases in minimum temperature have been greater than those for maximum temperature, with a consequent decrease in diurnal temperature range.

Source: www.metoffice.gov.uk/UK climate trends

It looks like the average diurnal temp difference for February from 1900 onwards is 18.2 DgC but I can't find reference to the record highest range... yet
