Rain again, possibly drier later

Unsettled conditions are expected to persist for much of the week ahead with further rain likely at times, although south eastern areas may stay drier and brighter at times. Will things improve for the bank holiday weekend? At the moment there is a lot of uncertainty, although the guidance from some forecasting models is for an improvement with the possibility of pressure rising across the UK. Things should be much clearer by the middle of the week and we will be issuing further updates on the likely bank holiday weekend conditions.

Some improvement on the way

All areas are likely to see more rain during the next few days, but overall it does look as though things are beginning to gradually improve. Next week may well bring a few days of reasonably dry and warm weather particularly to southern areas.

Bank holiday

At the moment it looks as though most of England and Wales should have a dry and bright bank holiday on Monday. Scotland and Northern Ireland may be less fortunate with the possibility of outbreaks of rain developing at times.

Summer returns for many

Autumn may be just around the corner now, but the week ahead is likely to bring some of the best weather of the summer so far to most of the UK. The Azores high pressure is finally building from the south west which means a good deal of dry and sunny weather is likely in southern areas early in the week, and this should extend further northwards later on. By the end of the working week it may well be turning quite hot in southern and eastern areas before a breakdown to cooler and less settled weather pushes though. It currently looks as though the breakdown will occur on Sunday, but if it is stalled slightly there is a reasonable chance of a few areas recording 30C or perhaps even a tad higher locally.

Fine and warm at first

There has been a lot more cloud around during recent days than we were expecting, and this has pegged back temperatures significantly. There should be a change during Friday and Saturday as the cloud increasingly clears away to leave blue sky and very warm conditions in the south and east, with temperatures locally reaching up to 27C. Things take a turn for the worse on Sunday as a frontal system moves in from the west and triggers thunderstorms and some intense downpours for a time. Cooler and fresher weather will follow on behind and should be covering all of the country by Monday

Unsettled with rain at times

Rather unsettled conditions are expected to dominate during the week ahead as the meteorological autumn gets under way. There will be some brighter and drier weather at times, but it is likely to be on the cool side with the possibility of some noticeably chilly nights in northern areas during the middle part of the week. Things may settle down for a time later in the week, but by the Friday it does look as though heavy rain may be threatening southern and central regions once again.

Very unsettled with heavy rain

Everyone has their own view on what 'good weather' means but we think you'd be hard pressed to classify conditions during the next few days as anything other than atrocious! Heavy rain will sweep across most of the country on Friday with the likelihood of localised flooding. In places over 50mm of rain may fall. During the weekend the unsettled theme continues, although the rain should become more showery allowing for some brighter spells. Developments next week are still very uncertain.

Drier weather for many

During recent days it has felt more like early November than early September as heavy rain has caused widespread flooding and has helped to keep temperatures well down on where they should be at this time of year. The good news is that the week ahead should bring an improvement with some drier and warmer conditions at times, especially in the south. It's not all plain sailing though as weather fronts will still be trying to push in from the west, and in northern and western areas in particular further rain is likely. Even in the south and east there is the possibility of some rain at times, although here it shouldn't be too bad for much of the time.

Fine in southern and central areas

Southern and central parts of the UK should have a much better week with a good deal of dry and bright weather as high pressure building over Scandinavia begins to take control of our weather. A different picture is expected in the north and west where it will remain less settled with further spells of wet weather at times. Temperatures are also likely to reflect the split, with relatively warm conditions developing in the south, but temperatures being pegged back in northern regions. It does currently look as though high pressure will continue to control the weather across the UK next weekend and it may turn warm in many parts possibly making for ideal conditions for a late season barbecue

Continuing settled and rather warm

Only a week or two ago it seemed as though it would never stop raining, but now we're struggling to see where the next batch of rain may come from! A complete turn around in the weather has taken place as high pressure is now ruling the roost and blocking the usual conveyor belt of weather systems off the Atlantic Ocean. This pattern is expected to persist through the weekend, possibly providing good conditions for a late season barbecue. You can check out the barbecue index for your location here. Through next week it looks as though the dry theme will continue for most of us!

Dry all week for many

Many parts of the country had a glorious weekend and it does look as though there will be a good deal of dry weather during the week ahead. The first half of the week may well bring a fair amount of cloud, but as we move towards the weekend the sun should begin to return bringing an Indian summer to the UK. Next weekend could again provide fine conditions for a late season barbecue.

Warming up for the weekend

There has been a good deal of cloud in many areas during the last couple of days, and this has brought some patchy rain to some parts. It does look as though things will improve during the next couple of days, and it may well turn quite warm by the weekend with temperatures in southern and central areas possibly reaching 21C locally

Mild winter ahead for the UK?

As some of you may be have read the UK Met Office has updated its forecast for winter 2008/09 and is suggesting temperatures are more likely to be above normal over much of Europe including the UK. This would follow the trend of the last couple of decades when average or colder than average winters have become increasingly rare in the UK.

We'll shortly be publishing our own early winter weather thoughts and giving you an indication of whether we also think milder than average conditions are likely. There are some signs at the moment that we are following the pattern of recent years with relatively benign conditions developing in September, and then if the computer models are correct, a chance of cool or cold and unsettled conditions developing during October

Unsettled week ahead

A complete change in the weather this week as cooler and unsettled conditions develop across the country. It will also turn very windy early in the week and this combined with heavy outbreaks of rain could lead to some very unpleasant autumnal conditions in many places

Cold, but turning unsettled

Cold conditions for the time of year are expected during the next few days as a northerly airflow moves down across the UK. This could well lead to some snow over high ground in northern areas and some low overnight temperatures with frost in places on Saturday morning. The latest 14 day discussion forecast here. However, it will then turn milder and unsettled once again as pressure falls.

Heavy rain through the weekend

Very heavy rain is expected across much of England during Saturday and Sunday. As well as being very wet it will also be windy leading to some atrocious conditions. The rain is expected to slowly clear away from the south east during Sunday

Unsettled, but improving in the south

Unsettled weather is expected across much of the country during the next few days with further rain likely at times. Tuesday in particular looks very wet with heavy bursts of rain at times in most areas. As we head into the second half of the week it does look as though high pressure will begin to build and this should bring warmer and probably drier conditions to southern parts. By the weekend it may well be quite pleasant in southern and central areas.

The latest 14 day discussion forecast here.

Early winter thoughtsWe'll shortly be publishing our early thoughts on the winter ahead. These will reflect what we think and will not be a simple reflection of the long range forecasting models which are widely available.

Rain on the way for many

The weekend brought glorious weather to many parts of the country with temperatures peaking about 21C. A change is on the way during the week ahead with most areas seeing some rain. In particular it looks like northern areas will see less settled and cooler conditions. In the south some rain is likely during the middle part of the week, and temperatures will gradually return to the seasonal average, although at the moment there is no sign of any really chilly conditions here. It does look as though even by next weekend high pressure won't be too far away from southern areas, and it may well keep things reasonably dry. Weather fronts are more likely to affect the north, bringing the likelihood of further showers or longer spells of rain.

Fair in the south

High pressure close to the south of the UK does look set to loosen its grip somewhat during the days ahead and this will mean less settled weather developing with outbreaks of rain pushing in from the west at times. The worst of the weather looks likely to be in the north and west of the country where as well as turning wet it will also be windy at times. In the south some rain is also likely, especially during the early part of next week, but once that has cleared through pressure may well rise and settled conditions could return. Chillier at times in the north, but in the south temperatures will often be close to or above the seasonal average.

Unsettled for much of the country

The week ahead is set to provide a good deal of less settled weather with all areas likely to see some rain. In the south things shouldn't be too bad for much of the time, but a different story is likely in northern areas where a good deal of wet and very windy weather is expected. Chilly at times in the north, but southern parts should often be milder. Loads of new features on the site this week

Snow likely in places next week

Despite it still being October it does look as though next week is likely to bring an unusually cold spell of weather for the time of year and there is likely to be some snow in places. Computer forecasting models have been suggesting the change to colder conditions for several days and confidence in this developing is now quite high. During Sunday and Monday we expect a cold pool of air from the arctic to moving down across the UK. By Monday it may well be cold enough for showers to be turning wintry in the north. During the middle part of the week there is the possibility that most of the UK will be under a very cold airstream with the risk of some sleet or snow showers extending even to parts of central and southern England. Over high ground in northern areas there is the possibility of some heavy snow falling for a time. There are some indications that the colder conditions may last through the second half of the week too

An early taste of winter next week

Particularly cold conditions for the time of the year are likely to extend southwards across much of the UK during the first half of next week as a northerly air stream develops. Although it's still only October it does look as though there will be a risk of some snow especially over the Scottish hills where some heavy falls are possible. The chance of snow may well extend to other parts of the country for a time, and we'd even not rule out the odd flake of wet snow falling in any heavy showers that may develop in central and southern parts of the country on Wednesday.

There are some indications that the colder conditions may last through the second half of the week too

Unusually cold, snow in places

An unusually cold spell of weather for October will affect the UK during the week ahead, and there will certainly be some snow over higher ground in northern areas at times. The wintry weather will be brought about by an arctic airstream coming directly the north pole. The upper air temperatures look to be exceptionally low for the time of year, and this should encourage the development of showers and even possibly polar lows. These low pressure systems tend to be relatively small but can deliver heavy falls of snow when all the ingredients come together at the right time. At this time of year lots of things do need to fall into place for this to happen, and obviously the chances of snow are much lower than in January or February. Despite this, it does look as though there is a significant risk of sleet and snow becoming more widespread for a time during Tuesday and Wednesday. Even higher ground in southern regions may see some snow.

Rain, sleet and snow on Tuesday?

Tuesday may see a more organised band of precipitation pushing southwards across the UK, and this is likely to bring a mixture of rain, sleet and snow. Snow is most likely in the north and over the hills, but not exclusively so. The precipitation is likely to reach the Midlands and parts of the south east during the evening as the temperatures fall away, so there is the chance of some sleet or snow even in these parts of the country.

The unusually cold October weather is set to continue for several days bringing frosty nights and some sleet and snow in places. The wintry weather is being brought about by an arctic airstream coming directly the north pole. The upper air temperatures are very low for the time of year, and this should encourage the development of showers and more prolonged spells of rain, sleet or snow. This does look like an exceptional spell of weather for October, possibly a once every 25 year event.

We'll have regular updates during the week ahead
