KARACHI: A major earthquake struck a region near the Iran-Pakistan border on Tuesday, with Iranian state television reporting at least 40 people killed in the aftermath.

An Iranian government official said he expected hundreds of deaths from the massive 7.8 magnitude earth quake, felt as far away as New Delhi and Gulf cities of Dubai and Bahrain.

“It was the biggest earthquake in Iran in 40 years and we are expecting hundreds of dead,†said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The epicenter was in southeast Iran in an area of mountains and desert. It was located 201 km southeast of the Iranian city of Zahedan and 250 km northwest of Turbat in Pakistan, USGS said.

Tremors were felt across several Pakistani cities, including Quetta, Pishin, Killa Abdullah, Chaghi, Sibi, Jaffarabad, Karachi, Hyderabad, Quetta, Badin, Islamabad, and Rawalpindi.

According to reports, the earthquake shook areas from Quetta to Pak-Iran Border Taftan and Pak-Afghan border Chaman. And Mekran belt near Arabian Sea.

Several part of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, including Peshawar and Dera Ismail Khan, and the Federally Administered Tribal Areas, also felt the jolts.

Tremors from the earthquake were felt as far away as New Delhi and the Gulf cities of Dubai and Bahrain.

Across the Gulf, high-rise buildings swayed and officials ordered evacuations. Dubai has the world’s tallest tower, the 828-meter Burj Khalifa.

Last week, a deadly 6.1 magnitude quake about 96 kilometers southeast of Bushehr, the site of Iran’s reactor.

Massive quake kills 21 in Pakistan: officials

KARACHI: A major earthquake struck a region near the Iran-Pakistan border on Tuesday, killing 21 people in different parts of Pakistan’s southwestern Balochistan province, officials said.

Officials confirmed to Dawn.com that up to 21 people had died due to the earthquake, while 60 people were reported to be injured.

The worst-hit areas from the 7.8 magnitude quake were reported to be close to the Pakistan-Iran border.

In the Mashkel area of Balochistan’s Washuk district, several hundred houses were reported to have collapsed, raising fears of casualties in the area.

Dozens of shops and buildings had also been destroyed by the tremors.

The epicenter was reported by the United States geological Survey to be in southeast Iran in an area of mountains and desert.

Meanwhile, there were conflicting reports regarding casualties in Iran.

An Iranian provincial governor said there were no deaths in Iran due to the earthquake.

“Fortunately, the earthquake resulted in no fatalities,†Hatam Narouyi, the governor of Sistan and Baluchistan where the 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit, told the ISNA agency.

Iranian state television had earlier reported at least 40 people killed, but acknowledged it had no official confirmation.

Iran's Red Crescent said it was facing a "complicated emergency situation" in Sistan and Baluchistan, where villages are scattered over desolate hills and valleys. A resident in the quake zone, Manouchehr Karimi, told The Associated Press by phone that "the quake period was long" and occurred "when many people were at home to take a midday nap." Iranian state TV said power and communications systems were down in the province.

Japan island rocked by over a dozen quakes

AFPWednesday, Apr 17, 2013

TOKYO - More than a dozen earthquakes, one of them magnitude 6.2, rocked a volcanic island south of Tokyo Wednesday, the national meteorological agency said.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or property damage from any of the quakes and no risk of a tsunami, the agency said.

The biggest tremor, with its epicentre located near Miyake Island some 180 kilometres (110 miles) south of Tokyo, was registered at around 5:57 pm (0857 GMT), the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

"There may be slight changes in the level of sea along Japan's coast but there is no fear of damage resulting from this quake," the agency said.

There had been 13 minor quakes near the island - an active volcano - since 10:15 am (0115 GMT) Wednesday.

A small earthquake was also registered four minutes after the 6.2-magnitude tremor, the agency said.

The volcano erupted in 2000, forcing all 3,800 islanders to evacuate. Many of them have since returned to the island.

A strong earthquake has struck the western Chinese region of Sichuan.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the quake, which had a 6.9 magnitude, was centred 69 miles north-west of the town of Leshan.

It said the tremor occurred at a depth of 10.2 miles (16.4km) below the surface. It is not clear if there have been casualties.

An 8.0 magnitude earthquake in Sichuan province, in May 2008, killed nearly 90,000 people.

The latest quake - initially reported as a 7.0 magnitude - struck at 08:02 local time (01:02 BST), the USGS said.

It was felt 115km (71 miles) away in the provincial capital, Chengdu, according to China's state news agency Xinhua.

At least 203 people are believed to have died following a powerful earthquake in China.

Some 11,500 were injured – almost 1,000 of them seriously – when the 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck near remote hill villages in Sichuan province.

The body count is expected to rise as more than 15,000 rescuers search the rubble for survivors, although many emergency workers have been forced to walk to the disaster scene after roads were blocked by landslides.

The rescue effort has also been hit by aftershocks that were almost as strong as the initial quake.

More than 6,000 troops have joined the rescue efforts, but one soldier died and seven were injured when their vehicle plunged over a ravine into a river on their way to the epicentre.

At least 13 people have been killed and 105 more sustained injuries in a 5.7 magnitude earthquake that rattled Afghanistan, with strong tremors felt in neighboring Pakistan. According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the Wednesday quake struck at a depth of 65 kilometers (40 miles), some 25 kilometers northwest of Jalalabad in Afghanistan's Nangarhar province, close to the Pakistani border. Pakistan's meteorological office put the magnitude of the earthquake at 6.2. On April 4, an earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale jolted parts of Afghanistan and Pakistan. The epicenter of the quake was on the Afghan-Tajikistan border at a depth of 225 kilometers (140 miles), Pakistani meteorological officials said. The quake also hit northwestern Pakistan, Islamabad and parts of Pakistan's central province of Punjab. The worst earthquake to hit Afghanistan in recent years occurred on May 30, 1998, when a quake measuring 6.9 on the Richter scale struck Takhar and Badakhshan provinces. Between 4,000 and 4,500 people died in the tremor.
