Algeria's state news agency says a 5.1-magnitude earthquake struck a town in the country's north, injuring 11 people and causing extensive damage. The report cited the national geophysical center as saying the quake hit at about 4 a.m. in Hammam Melouane, 40 kilometers (25 miles) south of Algiers, the capital. Local official Abdelghani Yazouzi told the news agency that 90 percent of the buildings in the area were damaged, in part because of poor construction. He says people were panicked. The U.S. Geological Survey recorded the magnitude of the tremor at 4.9.

Another earthquake, measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale, struck Central Greece on Friday, two days after a 5.1-magnitude quake caused extensive damage to homes.

The epicentre of the earthquake, which struck at 2.50pm, was at the village of Elatia, at about a depth of 10km.

Meanwhile, teams of engineers are continuing to survey damage after Wednesday's earthquake in Fthiodida prefecture have warned the owners of over 60 dwellings not to return to their homes.

Plus quite a few large aftershocks

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.8 has struck south of New Zealand's capital, Wellington, sending panicked workers and residents into the streets.

Friday's quake, which hit near the northern tip of New Zealand's South Island, was at a depth of about 10km, according to Geonet, a New Zealand earthquake monitoring service, which originally gave it a magnitude of 6.0.

While fire authorities said it was too early to assess the impact, there were some reports of superficial damage to buildings from the quake, which sent items tumbling from shop shelves.

Air and rail services were being suspended while officials checked tracks and runways for damage.

There were also widespread power outages across the north of the South Island.

There was no specific threat of a widespread tsunami, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre.

New Zealand has been hit by a string of quakes since a shallow, 6.3 magnitude tremor devastated the South Island's Canterbury region in 2011, killing nearly 200 people and levelling Christchurch, the country's second largest city.

Powerful earthquake shakes New Zealand capital

Posted Image

Strong earthquakes shook central New Zealand on Friday, damaging homes and roads and sending office workers scrambling for cover in the capital. No serious injuries were reported. A magnitude-6.5 temblor struck just after 2:30 p.m. near the small South Island town of Seddon, and at least six aftershocks were 5.0 magnitude or stronger. Several homes near the epicenter were severely damaged, with chimneys collapsing and roofs caving in, said police spokeswoman Barbara Dunn. She said a bridge was severely damaged on the main highway near Seddon, and that rocks and debris had fallen onto the road. Police closed a section of the highway.

Some buildings in Wellington, the capital, were evacuated, and items were knocked off shelves in places. Police said a number of people were freed from Wellington elevators that stopped working. The initial temblor also forced the nation's stock exchange to close for more than an hour. Wellington Mayor Celia Wade-Brown said there was no major damage to the city's infrastructure or office buildings. She said highways had become clogged as people left the city. "We think this is business as usual," she said, "but it is going to take a little while for people to get home tonight."

The U.S. Geological Survey said the epicenter of the initial temblor was 58 miles west of Wellington at a depth of 6 miles. A quake of similar strength in the same area three weeks ago broke water mains, smashed windows and downed power lines. Caroline Little, a seismologist with New Zealand quake monitoring agency GeoNet, said the series of quakes since July had followed an unusual pattern.

"Normally you get a big quake and then the aftershocks get smaller in magnitude," she said. Little said the July quake was on a fault line near Seddon that had not previously been mapped. She said it was too early to determine if Friday's quakes were on that same fault. A different fault line runs through Wellington, and many in the city fear an earthquake along that fault could result in a major disaster.

New Zealand is part of the so-called Pacific "Ring of Fire" that has regular seismic activity. A severe earthquake in the city of Christchurch in 2011 killed 185 people and destroyed much of the city's downtown. Local authorities issued no tsunami warnings after Friday's quakes
