Guatemala earthquake death toll climbs to 48

The death toll from the powerful earthquake that battered Guatemala has climbed to 48, according to the latest figures provided by President Otto Perez Molina. A total of 39 people died in San Marcos province, which was hardest hit by the temblor; eight others in Quetzaltenango; and one person in Solola, all located in western and northwestern Guatemala, the president said in a press conference Wednesday night.

At least 23 people remain missing, 155 others were injured and more than 17,000 were affected by the earthquake, Perez Molina said. Earlier Wednesday, he declared three days of national mourning for the victims and urged people to resume their normal activities on Thursday, although he said the country remains in a state of alert for possible powerful aftershocks.

Emergency workers, meanwhile, resumed their rescue efforts early Thursday.

The quake, which struck at 10:35 a.m. Wednesday and was listed by the U.S. Geological Survey as magnitude 7.4, is the strongest to hit Guatemala since the Feb. 4, 1976, magnitude 7.5 temblor that claimed the lives of more than 25,000 people and caused millions of dollars in damage. The epicenter of Wednesday's temblor was located offshore, 24 kilometers (14 miles) south of the Pacific coast town of Champerico, the USGS said. The quake also was felt strongly in El Salvador and parts of southeastern Mexico. EFE

Burma earthquake: At least 12 feared dead

A strong earthquake has rocked central Burma, with at least 12 people feared dead and dozens more injured.

The 6.8-magnitude quake struck some 120km (70 miles) north of the second-largest city of Mandalay, at a depth of 10km, the US Geological Survey said. Burma's local media say a bridge under construction collapsed in the town of Shwebo, closest to the epicentre. In Mandalay, terrified residents dashed out of their homes for safety, fearing more tremors.

The earthquake hit at 07:42 local time (01:12 GMT), the US Geological Survey said. An official in Sintku township near the quake's epicentre told Associated Press six people had died there, some of them workers at a gold mine that collapsed. A number of people were injured. A police officer in Shwebo said five construction workers who had been working on the Radana Thinga bridge near the town were missing after "a huge steel beam fell into the river". He told Reuters that one woman had also died and 10 people had been injured in the nearby town of Kyauk Myaung after a house collapsed. "This is the worst earthquake I felt in my entire life," 52-year-old Shwebo resident Soe Soe told Associated Press.Temples were reported damaged at Mogok, close to the epicentre. Save The Children told Agence France-Presse it had reports of 13 deaths across four sites in Burma, with some 40 people injured.

'Scared'

Residents in Mandalay described panic in the streets as they fled the shaking buildings. "I ran from my bed carrying my daughter out to the street. There were many people in the road. Some were shouting and others felt dizzy," San Yu Kyaw said. "People are now scared of more earthquakes," he added. The earthquake - which was felt as far away as Bangkok in neighbouring Thailand - was followed by two strong aftershocks. The US Geological Survey issued a yellow alert, indicating that "some casualties and damage are possible".

Earthquakes are relatively common in Burma. In March 2011, at least 75 people died when a powerful earthquake hit Burma near the borders with Laos and Thailand.

Deadly earthquake collapses bridge, gold mine in underdeveloped northern Myanmar

YANGON, Myanmar — A strong earthquake collapsed a bridge and damaged ancient Buddhist pagodas in northern Myanmar, and piecemeal reports from the underdeveloped mining region said mines collapsed and as many as 12 people were feared dead.

Myanmar’s Vice President Sai Mauk Hkam visited the damaged sites Monday, while authorities resumed their search for four missing workers near the collapsed bridge over the Irrawaddy River in Kyaukmyaung. A slow release of official information left the actual extent of the damage unclear after Sunday morning’s magnitude-6.8 quake. Myanmar has a poor official disaster response system and lost upward of 140,000 people to a devastating cyclone in 2008. “We have been told by the director of Relief and Resettlement Department that there were seven dead and 45 injured as of late Sunday evening. The figure could fluctuate,†said Ashok Nigam, the U.N. development program’s resident representative. He told The Associated Press that U.N. agencies had offered aid but “no formal request has been made yet.â€

Myanmar’s second-biggest city of Mandalay is the nearest population center to the main quake but reported no casualties or major damage. Mandalay lies about 117 kilometers (72 miles) south of the epicenter near the town of Shwebo, and the smaller towns in the area that is a center for mining of minerals and gemstones were worse hit. State media’s Sunday evening news said damage included 102 homes, 21 religious buildings, 48 government offices and four schools in the town of Thabeikyin. The gold-mining town is near the epicenter and had three dead and 35 injured. The official tally overall is six killed and 64 injured, while independently compiled tallies say about a dozen people died.

An official from Myanmar’s Meteorological Department said the magnitude-6.8 quake struck at 7:42 a.m. local time. The U.S. Geological Society reported a 5.8-magnitude aftershock later Sunday, but no further damage or casualties were reported. State television warned residents that aftershocks usually follow a major earthquake and told people to stay away from high walls, old buildings and structures with cracks in them. The biggest single death toll was reported by a local administrative officer in Sintku township — on the Irrawaddy River near the quake’s epicenter — who told The Associated Press that six people had died there and another 11 were injured.

He said some of the dead were miners who were killed when a gold mine collapsed. He spoke on condition of anonymity because local officials are normally not allowed to release information to the media. Rumors circulated in Yangon of other mine collapses trapping workers, but none of the reports could be confirmed. According to news reports, several people died when a bridge under construction across the Irrawaddy River collapsed east of Shwebo. The bridge linked the town of Sintku, 65 kilometers (40 miles) north of Mandalay on the east bank of the Irrawaddy, with Kyaukmyaung on the west bank.

The website of Weekly Eleven magazine said four people were killed and 25 injured when the bridge, which was 80 percent finished, fell. The local government announced a toll of two dead and 16 injured. All of the victims appeared to be workers.

Geoscience Australia has compiled a map showing earthquake prone areas in Australia.

It is fairly elementary.

http://www.ga.gov.au/darwin-view/hazards.xhtml

Although these maps do not enable us to predict earthquakes, they will allow engineers and planners to design and locate buildings and infrastructure so as to better protect our communities,'' Minister Ferguson said.

He said he also expects the modelling and data - which is publicly available online - will be used by emergency managers, researchers and the insurance industry.

It may also impact Australia building standards and codes in areas most likely to be affected by earthquakes.

But the information reinforces fears that Muckaty station, around 100km from Tennant Creek, is not a suitable location for the Federal Government's proposed nuclear waste site.

They said Australia has experienced 168 earthquakes above magnitude 5.0 since 1950, and last year alone, 82 earthquakes were recorded at a magnitude 3.0 or above.

In 1988, Tennant Creek was struck by a 6.7 magnitude earthquake, causing around $2.5m damage.

Australia's deadliest earthquake, magnitude 5.6, struck Newcastle, New South Wales in 1989, killing 13 and injuring 160
