update on the China quake

More than 155,000 people had been affected as of late Sunday, after a 6.6-magnitude quake jolted northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region early Saturday morning, local authorities said Sunday. As of 7 p.m. Sunday, the number of injured people climbed to 52 and 48,000 people had been evacuated after the earthquake hit a mountainous area along the border of Hejing and Xinyuan counties at 5:07 a.m., followed by several aftershocks of 3-to-4 magnitude, said authorities of the government of Ili Kazak Autonomous Prefecture. The quakes also tore down 7,500 houses and damaged another 64,000 houses. China's National Disaster Reduction Committee and the Ministry of Civil Affairs responded to the quakes and dispatched relief goods to quake-hit areas. The ministry allocated 2,000 tents, 10,000 quilts and 10,000 cotton coats to the areas. The regional governments also dispatched 5.1 tonnes of flour and 480 kilograms of edible vegetable oil as well as 230 tents and 120 quilts. The county's government had organized 2,470 people to the disaster relief work and had been trying to repair the damaged main roads. Experts said the quake-hit region, located about 3,500 meters above sea level, has been geologically active throughout history. Two earthquakes measuring higher than 7 on the Richter scale have jolted the region since 1900.

Would there be any effect of the quake at ground level if it was 200+ Km deep?

update on solomon island earthquake

A strong earthquake struck the main island of the Solomon Islands on late Wednesday evening, destroying an unknown number of houses and causing injuries, seismologists and local officials said on Thursday. No tsunami warning was issued. The 6.5-magnitude earthquake at 10:20 p.m. local time (1120 GMT) was centered about 39 kilometers (24 miles) southwest of Honiara, the capital of the Solomon Islands. It struck about 22.9 kilometers (14.2 miles) deep, making it a shallow earthquake, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). Emergency management officials in Honiara said they have received reports that a number of houses in settlements near the epicenter were destroyed and damaged, injuring at least one person. But the extent of the damage in the remote area was not immediately clear, and officials were still working to determine if there were other victims. The USGS estimated that some 137,000 people on Guadalcanal island may have felt moderate to strong shaking, while 348,000 others may have felt light shaking. The tremors caused scores of people to run out of their homes and flee inland or to higher ground in fear of a tsunami, which was not generated. Both the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) and the Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Center (JATWC) said there was no threat of a tsunami and did not issue a warning. "A destructive tsunami was not generated based on earthquake and historical tsunami data," PTWC said in a bulletin.

Two strong earthquakes have struck north-western Iran, leaving at least 50 people dead and hundreds more injured, officials say. The quakes struck near the city of Tabriz and the town of Ahar, but most of the casualties are thought to be in outlying villages. Reports say phone lines to many villages have been cut off, making rescue efforts harder. The US Geological Service measured the quakes at magnitude 6.4 and 6.3. "The quake has created huge panic among the people," one resident of Tabriz told the BBC. "Everyone has rushed to the streets and the sirens of ambulances are everywhere."
