Apparently this is a very unusual occurrance.

http://www.irishtime...breaking22.html

snip "A spokesman for the British Geological Survey, which monitors seismic activity in the UK and Ireland, said the quake happened just before 9am, 60km west of Aughleam near Belmullet.

He said it was very unusual to have an earthquake of such magnitude in the area as it had never happened before."

Looks to be in the area of the Rockall trough. A huge cliff-feature which is prone to landslides due to it's inclination facing the Atlantic current head-on, aswell as being made of sediment atop of denser continental crust.

I wouldn't be too surprised if this caused even a small Tsunami off the western Irish coastline, not many people would have seen anything though if it did.

Plenty of reports on radio stations of minor damage from the quake.

The epicentre was just under 11 degrees west, which lies before the Rockall Trough and along the Porcupine Bank.

This is roughly where it occurred with regard to the local ocean bathymetry

I am currently in Melbourne ( until next week ). This was a very discernable quake, shaking the bunk bed I was lying on at the time, quite a heavy vibration to and fro for 10 to 20 seconds. Then the rattling of the window, and what appeared to be the entire foundation of the pub I am staying at. Accomodation is on the second floor.

It sent every guest in their rooms into the corridor in an excitement.

This morning, there are reports of minor damage to some properties in the Melbourne area ( cracked walls and the like ). The link below has some photographs of some supermarket shelves tossing off their items onto the aisle.

http://www.theage.com.au/victoria/quake-shakes-state-20120619-20m88.html

Got to say I love my timing in being here!

This is reported as being the biggest quake to hit the state of Victoria in a century.

Thanks mate all is well that ends well.

Wouldn't care though if the roof came in and I ended up with an "earthquake scar", like getting nipped by a shark and showing off the scar for life ( don't have one of those either ).

I like this, this sums it up preety nicely:

MAP 6.0 2012/06/22 04:31:17 -54.302 158.727 9.9 MACQUARIE ISLAND REGION

no tsunami or damage reported

Macquarie Island is territory of Tasmania ( 800 miles/2000km south ), but 99.9% of the population are penguins.

It is interesting you talk about tsunamis - any big quake in that area would put Tasmania's south and east coasts under direct threat.
