Light rain early.

Now sunny spells and, am I allowed to say this, (he whispers, "it's warm")

Currently 14c and sure to rise if the sunny moments continue.

Brisk SW wind.

Peaked at 17C here. Bit grey now but the blue skies earlier brought the temps up nicely! I do like it to be warm but of course, not 'mild' :D

104mm rain at Capel Curig!! I think there was 166mm rain there the other day

How on earth can yoou squeeze that MUCH rain into 24 hours, and then do it all over again the next day?

I had my rainiest day on 31st january/1st February (0900-0900), and it HAMMERED it down ALL THROUGHOUT daylight hours and into the evening with no sign of letting up. It was easily the wettest day since I began taking records in December, and I was gobsmacked at 19mm (we usually get 2 or 3mm on a rainy day around here) But its nothing compared to some places!!

Anyway, Current conditions 11.3c, partly cloudy, breezy, but distictly mild. Maxed out at 14.0c today, and 14.5c yesterday.

It's amazing just how much wetter mountainous areas are in western Britain as opposed to low-lying or hilly areas.

Since I started receiving Weather Log, Durham's heaviest 24 hour fall was 54mm on 3 June 2000. However, that was a near record breaking event in Durham in itself, and no other months since I got the logs exceeded 30mm max per day.

In Lancaster 24 hour falls of 20 to 50mm are more common than in Durham, but even here, the record appears to be 56mm. And even the very wet upland location of Eskdalemuir hasn't exceeded a 70mm daily fall, at least since September 1999 according to Weather Log.

It really is amazing how much rain can be dumped on those mountains. Somewhere exceeded 500mm rain in the last few days alone- that's half Lancaster's annual average, and roughly 80% of Durham's!

Its unbelievable isn't it? I just can't get my head around it, it really is phenomenal. I was out and about all day Saturday when most of this 19mm fell, and let me tell you, it never let up, was constantly heavy, I was soaked and very brassed off. When I got the reading of 19mm, I knew it had been raining alright. I doubt very much that I will see many days with more than that, apart from summer thunderstorms. Until I started reading records, and then taking my own, I really didn't realise just how dry the area I live in is. Nearly on a par with East Anglia and the South East.

400mm in 5 days..........HOW?
