Ballina airport only reported small hailstones, 45km/hr wind gusts and 32mm of rainfalls. My best photos of the gust front is on other camera.

Wait a minute! This is no fun! A magic copycat low pressure of the US hurricanes??

Both Moree and Warrego radars showing some massive rainbands forming with near perfect cloud formation on satellite. From nothing in past 24hours! Gale wind warning for here tomorrow. Looks like gonna be ugly rain/wind event due to low pressure could form anywhere over us! Friday could be worse, even winds could hit 100km/hr at times and even some localized flooding?

That high to our east is really something.

How do you feel about onshore winds in Aussie? I guess they give useful rain but must be a bit of pain quite often.

As for that low forming off the S QLD coast, when it's done with you it's over to us....as is the usual pattern. Looks like it will muddle around in our weather for quite a time also. Grrrrr!

Heavy rain sets in across northeast New South Wales

Press Release, Thursday September 4, 2008 - 14:32 EST

Northeast New South Wales is receiving a drenching this afternoon, with more rain on the way for the rest of the week, according to weatherzone.com.au.

Rainfall totals in excess of 50mm were reported from the Hunter and Mid North Coast districts in the 24 hours to 9am today, while falls of up to an inch have been recorded today in the Northern Rivers district.

A Flood Watch is in force for many river systems in the Northern Rivers district, including the Tweed Valley, Brunswick Valley and Richmond River systems. A Severe Weather Warning is also in effect for the Northern Rivers warning of the potential for flash flooding.

"A low pressure system that is forming over southeast Queensland is directing moist easterly winds across northeast New South Wales. As these winds are forced to rise over the ranges, heavy rain results," weatherzone.com.au meteorologist Matt Pearce said.

"The low will move further south on Friday, so winds and rain will increase along the northern half of the New South Wales coast. We are looking at widespread totals between 50 and 100 millimetres, with some local falls even higher than that."

Large seas will also be whipped up along the New South Wales coastline, peaking across the weekend, as the low moves out into the Tasman.

Heavy rain and flash flooding are likely on the northern half of the North Coast overnight, extending to about Coffs Harbour during Friday morning and possibly the southern Mid North Coast Friday afternoon. Rain should ease from the north during the day, and mostly clear the Northern Rivers by Friday night.

Strong gusty winds are expected with mean speeds of 65 km/h and gusts in excess of 90 km/h along coastal parts .

Warnings

Gale Warning north of Norah Head.

Strong Wind Warning between Broken Bay and Norah Head.

Hello all. This event is gone now. About to leave into Tasman. We had over 70mm of rain in last 24hours. Top wind gust around 90km/hr at coastguard last night where we reported 85km/hr gusts as show of proof.

The event total is 86mm (not including today we had 15mm out of the storm!!!). The storm we had this afternoon at 3:45pm, the winds is pretty breezy and the rain is very intense as you see 'red core' on radar images.

Photo0044.jpg

The backend of the storm with sunshine peeking out under heavy rainfalls.

Photo0045.jpg

Might get a storm from the north this evening before the red rover hits.

PS: If would be nice someone to comment on my photos and reports after each time i posted (such as this one)?

I see that storm gave Sydney their coldest September day since 1975 (maximum of only 13C).

I hate storms like that, they may give Aussie's east coast a big dose of rain, but it's almost inevitable that it will spiral into the Tasman, where it lingers for far too long and ruins our weather over here. The polar jet is nowhere to be seen and the subtropical jet is not providing any support for the system, so it's just being lazy and hurling convective stuff, followed by miserable grey stuff over us.

I like your forecast for the end of the week, it's going to be quite a while before we get anything close to that.

For people in parts of the

NORTHERN RIVERS Forecast District.

Issued at 6:32 pm Friday, 12 September 2008.

A particularly severe and long-lived thunderstorm is likely to produce large hailstones, very heavy rainfall, flash flooding and damaging winds in the warning area over the next hour or two and maybe longer. The storm has already affected the Grafton area and is moving towards the north-northeast. Locations which may be affected include Evans Head, Yamba and Maclean.

Golf ball sized hail and strong winds have already been reported from Grafton and nearby Swan Creek late this afternoon and this evening.

CGs galore down south and its very frequent. Its a bit breezy atm. The radar show good solid black core and some stages of v hook shape. This is best living cell.
