Watford at 0130 about -1C, expect it will go to -2 to -3 tonight- Just enough to get a thin layer of ice on the pond.

    Lovely clear night though.

Well it's down to -3c here for me at the moment. Birmingham Airport is down to -5c according to XCWeather which is only 15 miles away but shocking. Was at -2c already when I got in my car at 9 this evening. My electric windows on the car had completely frozen and couldn't be opened! It's very refreshing outside anyway and a perfect clear sky out!

Wow dropped to -1.9C allready, how is it fluctuating so much?

What's your altitude, RRR?. It sounds to me as though you might be say, 40 or 50 mts, perhaps more, above lower ground such as a river valley; or perhaps you're at the upper end of a gently sloping area. Either way, as the air cools under clear skies it sinks and flows to the lowest point and if you're on the margin of the pool of cold air, or just above it, there's a constant slight mixing with slightly warmer air above, hence the sudden temperature fluctuations.

As the night progresses and the pool of cold air deepens, the fall in temperature will be steadier, provided you aren't so high up that you're always on the margin, or above, the coldest air.

Everything still frozen solid, the fog keeps on drifitng up and down the valley. clear sky except for the con trails and we still have about three inches of frozen snow on the ground, however on the cobbles and pavements this is now sheet ice and very dangerous. We could do with a bit of a thaw to clear the paths and my horse would like to see some grass!!

Last night was the sort of night where even vertical surfaces got covered in frost due to fog. It got down to -4.7, but is now just above freezing and everything is dripping wet.

    • Exceptional warmth for western Europe as October begins

There'll be exceptionally warm temperatures for the time of year affecting much of western Europe during the coming days, but that warmth will only graze the UK for now. Next weekend may see a more direct hit with the potential for southerly winds to draw some of that heat north and take temperatures into the mid or high-twenties. Read the full update here

Wind and rain before Spanish heat arrives for the weekend

There will be downpours into Tuesday with blustery winds picking up. Western Scotland will see a wet few days later this week. Then heat from Spain will surge up from the south giving a warm weekend. Read the full update here
