Well another bout of rain has brought this month's total to 57.3mm - can't really call it a dry one anymore as I usually class anything below 50mm as dry in the West Country but definitely below average.

8mm exactly here in the Suffolk desert, and the grass is already turning brown....just like a couple of years ago.

19.8mm in total here, which is 47% of normal. Not a patch on April 2007 however which had just 1.5mm of rain all month.

Its starting to look like a dry spring though with 48.3mm (55%).

43.1mm ( 61% of average ) here up to 1800 yesterday, and I don't think there's been any more overnight, so the 10th driest April in the last 30 years but well above the 18.5mm in 2007.

April was the 7th consecutive month with below average rainfall at this site.

A dry month for east anglia in particular and many eastern and central parts in general, the last few days have made up for what was looking a dry month for north western parts..

I think eastern parts once again will see a fairly dry May although wetter than April, unfortunately northern and western parts could be about to see a wetter than normal May with fronts stalling in these region.. wish I could be more optimistic, real shame as May can be an absolutely beautiful month in the NW of the country and the best month of the year..

The near drought conditions of the last month took their toll in devastating fashion this afternoon where I work, when a huge heath and gorse fire broke out. We have lost many acres of grassland to the fire and it was very sad to see the smouldering landscape this evening. Rain, we desperately need rain.

43.1mm of rain in April which makes it the 9th driest in the last 32 years. The first third of 2009 however is the driest start to a year since 1976 with 227.8mm recorded, just 64% of average.
